Vivaldi not remembering passwords
-
I'm having trouble getting Vivaldi to remember passwords.
I have set the option to "save webpage passwords". Each time I enter a new password, Vivaldi indeed asks me if I want to remember it. But the next time I go back a page where I have previously asked it to remember the password, I still need to retype my login. Furthermore, in settings, it still says "no saved passwords found". Is there anything I need to do?
I'm running 1.15.1147.64 (Stable channel) (64-bit) on OS X 10.11.6.
Thanks for your help!

@wherahiko Did you happen to have the "Passwords" box checked when invoking "Tools / Clear Private Data" or do you have any privacy/security-related extensions installed that might be clearing stored passwords?
Also, have you only used Vivaldi Stable releases on your system or have you also been testing 1.16/2.0 Snapshot builds as well?
-
@xyzzy Thanks! I have just checked, and can confirm that only the "Cache" box was ticked in the "Clear Private Data" option.
The only extensions I have are: 1Password, Inoreader, OneTab, Pocket, TunnelBear VPN, uBlock Origin, and Zotero. None of these interfered with the saving of passwords in Chrome.
I have only used Vivaldi Stable releases so far.
Thanks for your help!

@wherahiko Thanks, very much. Most Chrome extensions should work in Vivaldi, the obvious exceptions being those that rely on Google back-end services. I don't know if any of your extensions have any known compatibility issues with Vivaldi.
Since you're also a Chrome user, when you launch Vivaldi, do you get any prompts from macOS regarding accessing "Chrome Safe Storage" in your Keychain and if so, did you click "Allow Always" to grant that access? Vivaldi 1.15 uses the password in Chrome Safe Stroage to encrypt/decrypt sensitive information in secure storage; if you deny access, you won't be able to access your stored passwords.
-
@xyzzy Thanks! I don't get any prompts regarding "Chrome Safe Storage" now, but it's possible that I may have received the prompt and denied access when I first installed Vivaldi. If that is the case, is there any way I can grant the access at this point (i.e. make the request "come back")?

@kobi Sorry to hear you're having issues too. My passwords aren't just disappearing after a reboot; they appear not to be saving at all.

Anyone have solutions for this? Or at least for how to check/enable "Chrome Safe Storage" retrospectively? It seems this is a fairly isolated issue. I wonder if uninstalling and reinstalling Vivaldi might fix it. If I do this, are there some additional files I should find and delete before reinstalling?

I would help if I knew what's the problem, is harder to pinpoint when I don't use the same platform as you. I managed to fix the problem on my end, which was caused by a cleaning Software (that why I deleted my comment, as it's unrelated to Vivaldi and this topic).
You can try disabling any extensions, or resetting your profile (if you still have the problem after all that, you may be able to fill a bug report).

@wherahiko Open the macOS "Keychain Access" application, find "Chrome Safe Storage" and double-click on it, then click on the Access Control tab. If it's not there already, click on the "+" button and add
Vivaldi.app
to "Always allow access by these applications:" section, and then click on the "Save Changes" button.Launch Vivaldi. You should now be able to store passwords. If passwords still won't save, use Tools / Clear Private Data to clear ALL data, including passwords (don't forget to uncheck this box after) and hopefully that should get things working again.
If things still are not working, you can perform a Full reset of Vivaldi but hopefully that won't be necessary.
Best of luck!

@kobi Thanks for trying to help. The way that Chromium-based browsers encrypt passwords (and other sensitive data in secure storage) varies by platform. If the Vivaldi profile gets damaged or corrupted, that can also cause strange problems.
-
@wherahiko Sometimes a corrupted Login Data database will cause it. A fresh database fixes that. It's possible to turn off password saving in Settings. Extensions can also interfere - as can 3rd party security or cleaning software.
-
@ayespy Thanks! Would you know how I can get a fresh database (and what I might lose in the process)? I've discovered that the problem doesn't relate just to passwords; Vivaldi also "forgets" all tabs from the last session—including pinned tabs—even though I have set it to re-open the tabs from the previous session.
I'm thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling Vivaldi. Do you think this will solve the problem?
Thanks!

@wherahiko Uninstalling and reinstalling is reliably a waste of time. It does not impact the problem files. You can get your profile path from help/about and, with Vivaldi closed, go there and rename the Login Data file. This will cause you to lose all of your Login Data (usernames and passwords and saved autocomplete data I think). The Browser will create a fresh clean database file on restart and password saving should begin to work properly again. If it doesn't fix anything, you can delete the new file and rename the old one back to its original name, and you will have all of your data again.
If it does fix it, you will want to have first used one of the extensions or mini-programs that saves Chrome passwords and usernames in a plaintext spreadsheet or database. Even before you try that, you might try enabling password export and import in vivaldi://flags, so that you can export your passwords and then try to import them again if the clean database works.
(to export and import after you have enabled the flags and restarted the browser, you have to go to chrome://settings/passwords and click on the three vertical dots next to the "More Actions" label near the top of the passwords page.)

Ayespy, thank-you so much! That worked, and Vivaldi is now functioning perfectly for me. Thank-you for your help!

@Ayespy I just started having the same problem, went searching for advice, and found your post. I renamed the login data file, expecting to have to re-enter all my old data. When I restarted, my data was there. So this worked even better than expected. Thanks for posting this.
