Vivaldi not saving passwords on Mac
-
I installed Vivaldi browser yesterday and was very happy with it until I rebooted my mac and find that none of my passwords have been saved!
When I restarted Vivaldi after rebooting it came up with this:
I clicked on deny.
I just saved the password for this site then went to Preferences - Privacy and it is still not showing any saved passwords!!!

Chromium, in this case Vivaldi, saves passwords in your operating system's keychain. To save or access passwords, you have to enter your keychain password. If you deny that, it won't work.

@simonfromnorthcote Vivaldi actually stores passwords in a database in its profile folder, and it stored them in an encrypted form. The password (key) that's used to encrypt and decrypt items in secure storage is stored in the macOS Keychain in "Chrome Safe Storage". If you deny Vivaldi access to Chrome Safe Storage, it won't be able to decrypt the saved passwords.

Thanks guys, sorted now. It's the keychain app in utilities in OSX.
Being named 'Chrome Safe Storage' that confused the heck out of me! -
How do you allow Vivaldi access to Chrome Safe Storage?
-
@wynsmth Vivaldi does not use "Chrome Safe Storage" anymore. It now stores its storage encryption key in "Vivaldi Safe Storage".
-
Thanks for the reply. I find Vivaldi Safe Storage in the keychain, Vivaldi is set to always allow access, but it still doesn't work. How do I make this actually work? It really should not be this hard!
-
@wynsmth If this is a new/clean Vivaldi installation, you should not have any problems storing passwords. However, if you migrated your files from one Mac to another or restored from a backup that was made while Vivaldi was running, deleted the Vivaldi Safe Storage key, installed an older version of Vivaldi, migrated Vivaldi profile files from another operating system, or did something else that could have corrupted files your Vivaldi profile directory, that could explain why your passwords are not getting saved.

@xyzzy I did transfer data form an old Mac to a new one in December. I have only recently tried to use Vivaldi so I have no idea if the issue was there before. Vivaldi was not running when the back up was made. Where do I find Vivaldi profile directory or how do I fix this? I did a search of my computer, including system files, & nothing comes up.
-
@wynsmth Vivaldi stores its configuration files in various subdirectories under ~/Library. For more information, see this post: https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/419343
In your case, you will want to delete the Vivaldi files and subdirectories referenced in that post, and I would also advise deleting the Vivaldi app bundle from /Applications and reinstalling the latest version. Once you do all of that, you should have a new, pristine Vivaldi installation and everything should work normally.
-
@xyzzy Actually, what worked was there is a place on the privacy page of the preferences that allows you to log into your Vivaldi account. After I did that, passwords are now being saved. I hope this isn't putting my passwords anywhere else than my Keychain on my Mac and not floating around somewhere on Vivaldi's servers!
