Names for Windows

@pauloaguia How long will it take? 1 year, 2 years?
The development team never gives out estimates... but if it's in the pipeline already, I'd expect it to come out this year still...

No, You don't have. In the last update Vivaldi introduced Workspaces.
You have several tab bars one for work, one for leisure, one for Vivaldi forum, etc. and you only see one at a time.
Better than Windows. Try them.
Hi. I am testing Vivaldi for the people in my department.
We are not interested in Workspaces at all. We all have multiple monitors, deal with multiple topics, and need multiple windows. It's as simple as that. We are not interested in single-window solutions.
On the other hand, if it takes five years to implement a, ahem, function like this, I don't want to think about what will happen with something that has a minimum of complexity.
I suppose the developers of this browser will have their priorities. Mine is to provide an effective solution. We'll stick with Edge. Unfortunately.

I don't think naming windows would take much space. Just a minute fraction of the space to open a single tab -
@barbudo2005
I don't see how workspaces would work for me.
I currently have about 7 windows open, with 3 to 100+ tabs.
I use a tab manager with horizontal display and annotation for those with many tabs. The 3-tab window is the exception.
In the menu selection, I can see all the windows, with the name of the current tab. Instead I would like to see the name of the window. How would that work with work spaces ? -
Workspaces come to replace the use of Windows. You have a single window with workspaces inside it.
I have four:
You can switch between them with the image menu, using buttons or mouse gestures.

I see from your image that workspaces can be selected with a drop-down menu, which is nice. Avoids taking too much space in the tab bar.Often I put a tab (or usually several tabs) in the wrong window. With multiple windows, it can be time-consuming to correct.
How easy is it transfer tabs between work spaces ?Since I have hundreds of tabs in some windows, I use a tab manager with annotations to display tabs vertically. The annotations let me see useful infos that don't appear in the tab name. I have to test how work spaces will function with annotations, particularly if I transfer tabs between work spaces.
(I still need the horizontal tab bar to rearrange tabs in the same window, I assume also with work spaces.) -

Look this post to auto group tabs by domain:

@BronwynWork
There are tab managers outside Vivaldi at least as useful as Vivaldi tab management functions. A plus for other tab managers is that they display in a separate window.It seems to me that your needs almost require a separate instance of navigator. Why not use Chome or Chromium with appropriate extensions. That way the separation you seek is guarantied. Not as good as Vivaldi but in most respects comparable.

@barbudo2005
Using (short) workspace names is a little easier than tranfering between windows, with often very long tab names for the destination.
Nice -
Try Otto Tabs. It works like a charm.

@barbudo2005
Tell me .. how to transfer a tab between workspaces ? -
-
@andr202 Besides the "move tab" context menu option, the next Vivaldi version (already available as a snapshot) will even include a new feature where you can configure certain websites to always automatically move to a specific workspace, even if you open them from a different one.

...always automatically….
What wonderful words that make it easier to use Vivaldi !!!!

Is there any way to get this up the priority table for development? Workspaces and manual naming of Windows and having both show in the taskbar is really critical when using many browser windows on a busy system.
I much prefer Vivaldi's handling of workspaces over Edge's but lack of workspace names in the taskbar makes them very limited in use even so.
-
@knightnet Agreed!
I typically have more than one Workspace open at a time, so I have to look closely at the webpage title or the image preview to recall what's open. This can get confusing, especially with multiple text-based sites or when using the same site for different purposes.
Personally, I'd like to see the taskbar's preview window titled as their Workspace names; but I do think it would be best to provide the option to name the windows manually, similar to how Chrome handles it.
I also understand this is probably not very high on the development teams priority list, but I can hope! lol

I've "never" seen in Windows an ability to rename a program Window, but maybe having Vivaldi rename them as related to [a] Workspace is more easier and possible?
-
@Totto Any application in Windows can dynamically change its window title - that has always been a feature.
Here is an example from Edge with a general window open along with a workspace window called "TDA" - this is what you see in the taskbar:
-
@knightnet Sure, but not for me (or you?) to change it, unless you rewrite the source code ...) it's the program-as you say.
I'll give an example:
Suppose if there was a tool-program to change window title from:
"Microsoft Word - My document name here" >>
"I Like Microsoft - - My document name here"
or when you start Excel it' says "I hate maths" instead: See?Your example (window: 'TDA' ) is dynamically named (like last part of my example: "My document name here") by internal workings/code, not possible for an individual to change the former (Progam title: Microsoft Word -"
