Solved Session Autosave
-
Hello, could be possible to add session autosave, to file like other saved sessions, option (at least when the browser is closing) as it was in old Opera browser?
Thank You in advance
-
@ondrej-ulman Vivaldi already does save the current session on closing. Set the startup setting to "Last Session."
If Vivaldi crashes, or if some processes are running in the background, the session won't be saved. If you encounter this problem, use Task Manager to end all Vivaldi tasks, then the session should again save OK.
-
Bu tit is not saving a named session. If I open a session that was saved with a label, add new tab, and close the window, that session is not saved.
-
It looks like this is still not implemented. So one has to be carefully not to forget to save a window as a session before closing it.

What you want probably is: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/32151/tab-groups/31

I just ran into a crash. After which Vivaldi did not recover my tabs (due to other circumstances [bug report made]). Automatic saving of sessions every X hours that go into the saved sessions list would have saved me here.
Necro-ing this since several duplicates exist that point to here.
Note that my issue is not solved with save-on-exit, I am very glad that it exists, but it does not solve the issue of when Vivaldi does not open the saved session, or cannot save the session due to a bluescreen.
-
Just run into this problem too. If for some reason (like in my case) "Last Session" is overwritten all tabs are lost. Autosave would be a big help not to manually do it over and over again. Some session manager plugins have this feature, but they don't support tab stacks.

@butterfly64 @matjojo
auto-save session an in menu - like firefox has -
Restore last session
.
If you don't want to set last session as start-page, you can stay at any start-page and - when needed - click on restore in rightclick-menu.This option doesn't exist either and should be implemented.

@guigirl @LonM Oh, I didn't know that there exists a mod.
I just installed it and it is GREAT!!! Love it.One remark: As @LonM wrote in his tutorial, you have FIRST (!!!!) add a web-panel manually (clicking on + button and insert
vivaldi://sessions
).I did it after activating the script and that crashed the browser:
-
@guigirl Thanks a lot. The script makes it lots easier to handle sessions and some autosave functionality will show up some time

I might try that extension, but it'd be really wonderful to have an option at least for Vivaldi to save your individual sessions. I understand this becomes difficult, particulary with the feature that lets you open up a second session in the same window, but maybe just disabling that feature for those who opt into the auto-save will allow us to enjoy sessions to their fullest extent.
But I understand that could be a real pain for a use case that might be pretty niche.
**If no autosaving will be available, a shortcut to save the current session by overwriting the existing one would be really nice. The fact that I have to save each session as a brand new session if i want to save it is really cumbersome.
Remembering the "Save only this window" option for a session too.
Lastly an actual Session manager similar to the Window manager (or within it) would be extra nice.
Not trying to make demands or anything, just suggesting some quality of life improvements. I'm thrilled with Vivaldi overall and it's amazing that a browser like this exists in the first place

Necro-ing this post again. Vivaldi crashed on close and Last Session was lost. While reopening it, only the pinned stacked tabs are available.
I have Session Manager installed but it would just restore 278 tabs with no grouping. And they're not even in order.
Did I miss the function? Shouldn't be hard to implement at least one backup copy of the last session.
It's gonna take hours or days to recover the previous state.
Both the history and the sessions windows are blank...
- Having, let's say, an auto-save each day (keeping up to X autosaves) and a hourly autosave (keeping up to Y autosaves - maybe 24?) would be a very welcome addition
This has just happened when getting the automated Vivaldi update, from yesterday...

@neatwolf Why not use this?

@guigirl Hi, I found it above in the thread and I've just installed it (it didn't work putting everything in the custom CSS folder, I had to edit browser.html), and, yes, it more or less shows the contents of the Session popup.
It's... faster but still manual.
So I've been trying to make this: https://github.com/LonMcGregor/VivaldiMods/blob/master/mods/autoSaveSessions.jswork. Yet, I can't find its settings anywhere. I've already added it to browser.html (which should be the old way to do this - am I doing anything wrong? I've already enabled the experimental CSS mods but JS files don't seem to work if I put them in the folder I chose?).
It's... a bit messy at the moment. I wished the SessionBuddy supported Vivaldi sessions (with stacking) natively as the options I miss are all there.It used to work with standard Chrome tab groups but not with stacks.
To some degree latest chrome tab grouping wasn't too bad, I sometime wished Vivaldi extended that instead of implementing its own stacking logic - most extensions out there support those groups, not Vivaldi Stacks -
@neatwolf
There are many ways to Session Autosave. ^^

@neatwolf said in Session Autosave:
but still manual
No it's not. Mine autosaves my sessions every 5 minutes. Once i deduced how to install & set it up, it simply runs all by itself.

Allow for automatic, periodic "Save all tabs as session" based on a configurable schedule. For example, save all tabs as session every hour, or every time I open a new tab. Additionally allow for a max number of auto sessions and remove the oldest [auto] session automatically.
I had a crash that blew away my current tab configuration, and I hadn't saved in a couple of weeks. This sure would have been a lifesaver!

If Session-AutoSave isn't implemented soon, I'm afraid I will have to switch to another Browser.
AutoSave should save the session Tabs as NAMED SESSION with the current TIMESTAMP as the name.
