Vivaldi won't start from shortcut or from start menu in W10
-
So (for instance) I have to submit this via MS Edge. Chrome, firefox, opera and edge all start fine. I uninstalled Vivaldi and loaded a new one today - it did not fix it.
-
@birrellwalsh Works fine here. What's different about your Vivaldi install?
-
@birrellwalsh Are you able to start your current Vivaldi version from the Windows Explorer or the CMD window?
If yes, check the path in properties of the desktop shortcut and the path in standard programs. -
I have this problem too and it's because the shortcut target points to a non-existent file (C:\Users\Keegan\Desktop\vivaldi.exe). I manually updated the target and icon to the correct path, but after installing today's update, it is now broken again.
-
I also tried running an upgrade using Vivaldi.5.4.2729.2.x64.exe and a broken shortcut was installed both on the Desktop and in the Start Menu.

@keeganwitt Check suspect extensions (Ctrl+Shift+E) and disable/remove them.
-
@giannilupindo Not helpful. I've been having this issue myself with Sopranos build with no extensions. Though comparing notes with other users, it might only happen with All Users installs.
-
@sgunhouse That's possible. My installation was also for all users. Out of curiosity, does it seem to be in the stable branch too? I'm only running the snapshot version currently.
-
@keeganwitt For my bug report - which version of Vivaldi do you use? (Stable, Snapshot) They'll want to know which versions it effects.
-
@sgunhouse Snapshot (5.4.2729.2 (Official Build) (64-bit)). I haven't tried with the stable version.
-
@keeganwitt If you're watching the changelogs, my bug number is VB-90539.
-
This has also been happening to me for a couple weeks: the shortcut in my start menu is changing to point to a non-existent desktop file, and fixing it myself does not last.
I'm running "5.4.2741.3 (Official Build) (32-bit) ", "Revision f7b5f825b0dcec7f7dbb82d737c0311b825932db".
I probably did an all users install but I'm not sure... but the shortcut's location on my system is under "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs", which is the location of global/allusers entries.
I wanted to view/chime in on the bug report but I can't figure out how to view it.
-
Only staff and testers (aka Sopranos, I'm one of those) have access to the tracker. I can tell you they are looking into it. Personally I figured it should be easy, but it must not be as easy as I thought.
-
Thanks for the explanation, sgunhouse.
For what it's worth as a workaround for others, I added a second shortcut within the user portion of my startmenu ("<user>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"), with a different name to keep them distinct, and that one has not been modified. Since it's within the startmenu I can still easily select it by typing VIV into the search.
-
@sstoneb yes, the desktop shortcut is broken for Vivaldi 5.4 Snapshot.
-
The next snapshot of Vivaldi should fix the shortcuts to point to the right path.
-
@igorbukanov Thanks
-
@igorbukanov Thanks Igor. I saw you'd marked it fixed but wasn't going to say anything until we at least had a test build.
-
Thanks for the fix! I just installed the update and it has already corrected the shortcut.
