In page search (Ctrl + F) error
-
It has to do with the browser trying to find each and all instances of the first letter you'd typed - a CPU limitation freezes the program, try to see if the same happens when you copy&paste the whole search term, and post your machine specs - would be my suggestion
-
@med1an1ck Same happens to me everyday.
I use « CTRL+F, CTRL+V » like hundreds of times everyday and so Vivaldi crashes like a tens of times (that’s 10% crash).Vivaldi 1.13.1008.32 (Stable channel) (32 bits) on Windows 7
-
I have now opened a bug ticket as I still suffer from this bug from 5 to 10 times a day, whether I use Windows XP or 7, whether I press F3 or Ctrl+F.
Bug reported as VB-36119.

@gwen-dragon Thanks for the minor update notice.
The auto updater had not caught up yet.
I’ll report if it still happens or not (crossing fingers)…Vivaldi 1.13.1008.40 (Stable channel) (32-bit) on Windows 7
Vivaldi last available Windows XP version (forgot number) -
@gwen-dragon I confirm it still happens in 1.13.1008.40.
- I was in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Einzelhaft
- I selected the word Drahdiwaberl
- I pressed Ctrl+F and Ctrl+V quickly
I know I shouldn’t have pressed Ctrl+V but it’s a habit I still have from Opera presto.
The Find in Page bar appeared and Vivaldi crashed (I don’t know if it crashed before or after Ctrl+V.
-
It never happened to you?
It’s hopefully not systematic, it does not crash EACH time I Find in Page otherwise I could really not use Vivaldi. It happens about 5 times a day maximum (I can say more in other posts but it’s just a rough gutfeeling, I don’t know for sure), so I would say it happens 5 times out of dozens and dozens of searches, that makes it a small percentage.
But each time it happens (more than once a day), I loose some complex editing I was doing in some wiki and/or MusicBrainz releases, etc.

@Gwen-Dragon
☞ Does stand‐alone install means that I can keep my main Vivaldi unaffected by the install and execution of that other version on the same PC and same user session? It’s made for that, no risks ?
If it never happens to you but used to happen to @noonbaraegi and once to @Komposten and still happens to me on my 2 different operating systems and Vivaldi versions, then it may come from one of the extensions I use.
If you don’t mind, I will list here what I use per OS so that I can then pinpoint the culprit:
On Windows 7
- Vivaldi 1.13.1008.40 (Stable channel) (32-bit)
Why it is not 64 bit I don’t know, I’m pretty sure I did download thex64.exe
back then- Violentmonkey
With tons and tons of user scripts (same scripts I use in Opera presto and same as in Firefox I use from time to time) - Clutter Free - Prevent duplicate tabs
Still not found a proper equivalent as good as Opera presto’s No Dupes Linkclump
Still not found a proper equivalent as good as Opera presto’s Snap LinksJSON ViewerFair AdBlocker
- Violentmonkey
The extensions I think I didn’t have yet when I first encountered this Find in Page crash are
striked through.On Windows XP
I still use Opera presto mostly here because of some blocking bugs of this XP Vivaldi version. But I remember having had that same crash with Find in Page.
I will expand this section later as I am not in front of that PC yet

you can always refresh your version by installing the x64 version over it.

Hello,
I am now in latest Vivaldi version 1.14.1077.55 (Stable channel) (32-bit) still on Windows 7 (let’s not bother you with my old version on XP any more).
Vivaldi still freezes/crashes when I press F3 a couple of times.
Still not systematical but way too often to my taste.
I’m very handicapped by this because when I’m filling out forms I have to refrain from using Search in page in fear of having to retype all over again.
VB-36119 should still be open.
-
@gwen-dragon It works for me as well, this page.
I’ll post my crashing pages next time but it’s not systematical so I’ll keep retesting your long page also from time to time to see if it’s related to certain types of pages only (maybe JavaScript, etc.). -
@gwen-dragon Unfortunately I have no crash dumps on today’s date.
I only have 2 crash dumps in that"%userprofile%\appdata\local\vivaldi\user data\crashpad\reports"
folder, although I have the Search in page freeze crash everyday.Maybe dmp files are created only when Vivaldi shuts down.
In my case, it freezes indefinitely and then I have to kill it. -
Unfortunately I have the same problem. But I can't remember steps to reproduce it:(
-
I also have the same problem. I don't use page searches every day but I run into this twice a week on average. The symptoms are, Ctrl+f, start typing in something to search for, entire browser freezes after maybe two character presses. Windows reports the browser as non-responsive, CPU rises to 40% for the process and it will sit there spinning until I 'end task'. No other browser tabs are functional during this hang. There is no crash dump.
What can we do to assist gathering diagnostic data on Windows? I've tried running Dr Memory and Process Monitor but Dr Memory wouldn't run at all and Process Monitor didn't show anything useful, other than normal log file and socket activity.

@gwen-dragon,
I got this again today and still nothing new in the crash report folder.
I did copy what’s in the details of the crash popup in Windows 7 but I doubt it might be of any help:
{DELETED}
FTR I was in {DELETED}, looking for the string “ymail”, I have hit F3 (next match) 2 or 3 times.
I had to remove interesting details because this forum told me:

@gwen-dragon,
It’s not very convenient if I cannot paste the page URLs…
Last time it was in a gihtub page IIRC.Today it happened again in https://musicbrainz.org/artist/3bb16225-b56f-4df8-bf12-893080501a59/open_edits
I hit Ctrl+F and type merge releases then I hit F3 three times and it froze forever.

It happened once again in https://github.com/schismtracker/schismtracker/wiki/ITTECH.TXT where I was looking for (Ctrl+F) « pitch slide » then Vivaldi froze after 3×F3 key presses.
-
Sorry but for the record I report when it still happens, although I don’t report each time it happens.
I am still on version 1.14.1077.55 (Stable channel) (32-bit) on Windows 7 (64-bit).
It happened when I was now on https://musicbrainz.org/artist/e0355b40-54ac-41a0-ae0a-f380c1aaad82/works and I was looking for the greek letter ZETA:
- Ctrl+F
- Ctrl+V (Ζ)
- 3×F3
It crashed on the last occurrence (third), after I had pressed my third F3.
But I don’t remember if it was before or after I tried to press my fourth F3.
update:
As always, after a restart, if I try to reproduce, I can keep my F3 pressed for thousands of “find next” and it won’t crash…
The version you test with is more recent but in the topic you never reproduced with older versions either.
I have updated multiple times with no progress on this issue as it seems not everyone is having the issue.Maybe I should try to install the 64-bit version (I think I already did the test but cannot see it in the topic, I’m not sure).

I suggest you install the latest snapshot as a standalone version (just for testing), it won't impact your current install and you can then leave this "test" version with NO extensions. Then if you can reproduce it you can discuss it here and/or create a new bug report.

Hi there.
I’m not staying without doing nothing.I don’t really want to install parallel version because I might not use that parallel temporary Vivaldi enough to trigger the bug.
I have had my regular crashes since last time.
Just for the record but the page I was on the last time it happened is not really that important for a random bug.
I was there, looking for pocket fighter. But this time I have noticed some important details.
Last found occurrence would trigger the crashWhether it’s when I arrive on last occurrence or when I press F3 once again and it should loop back to first occurrence (I never remember), notice that it seems to always happen when I’m on last occurrence of the searched terms (here 2 of 2, previously 4 of 4, previously 3of 3, my earlier examples are no longer testable).Update: In fact it may be more often on last occurence but for the first time today, I had the crash even before the search bar appears.
Parent process could be the culprit
This time I opened sysinternals’ Process Explorer and noticed that my Vivaldi.exe was in fact probably most of the time launched through AutoHotkey.exe (AHK).
I thought maybe it could be something that would make this happen on me more often than other people. So from that time, I took care to launch Vivaldi normally (its parent process is now always the root explorer.exe).
I have also installed 64-bit version.
For one whole day, I haven’t had any crashes, so I’m crossing fingers.Update: In fact it still crashes without being launched through AHK.
Unrelated, I have noticed an issue when installing 64-bit version.
I should have thought of uninstalling 32-bit version first because the 64-bit installer did not take care of that.
So I had this error each time I launched Vivaldi from the start menu where the icon was still pointing towards 32-bit version. Now it’s fixed, I have uninstalled Vivaldi (which only uninstalled 64-bit) and manually removed the 32-bit Vivaldi from Program Files (x86).
And installed again 1.15.1147.42 (Stable channel) (64-bit) (latest to date).
