Vivaldi Forum mod 2.0
or 2.1 to be exactβ¦
Please make sure you have the 2.1 version, the other one won't load the options page, I'm sorry about that. You can force an extension update by going to Vivaldi's extensions page, enabling developer mode at top right and clicking "Update".Anyway, what's new?
New Options Page
@Sjudenim and I completely reworked the options page and it opens in an individual tab now. One big change is that you don't have to click SAVE anymore after every single change you make - theme and modifications selections will save automatically. You still have to reload your Vivaldi Forum tab/s to activate any changes of course.
The themes selection screen features previews for all themes, inspired by the Vivaldi browser themes section. The custom theme edit screen has been renamed to Theme Machine and provides 4 spots to save your custom creations. The import/export setup has been reworked and let's you copy/paste the theme codes directly; this means no more messing around with files! Personally I put all my themes in the notes panel. This makes it easy to drag and drop selected codes unto the import field, if you like to work with the mouse.
I do hope you like the new setup. At this place a thank you @LonM for going bug-hunting .
Translations
Vivaldi Forum mod 2.0 introduces translations. Following additional languages are currently available:
- French
- German
- Italian
- Spanish
A big thank you @hlehyaric, @burbuja and @Hadden89 for making this possible and doing several rounds of translations, because the code kept changing. This was surely annoying, sorry about that . If someone wants to translate Vivaldi into their own language, this is relatively easy now. I wrote up instructions on github and the process is straightforward. Everyone is invited to contribute.
So this is it, the holiday release with big version jump. I hope you do enjoy it! Merry Christmas everyone!

I'd post some examples themes but I'm away on holiday right now. Good to see this update finally get released as the new options page looks very good.
-
@luetage Thank you so much for the new release. I'll place it under the Christmas tree tonight. Pretty sure my family will be astonished as well.
-
-
@Steffie You're right, but luetage only mentions two of them in his post.
-
@hlehyaric Certainly, yup... but i was staggered when i saw what a global effort it was, & felt that it should be publicised. I mean, how really excellent is this community??!!
-
@luetage More lovely work thanks.
The answer is probably directly in front of me & i'm blind to it, but anyway... how can i backup/export these values/settings pls?
Spoiler
I suppose i could manually copy the individual colour-codes to a WP Note, & that would certainly provide me a failsafe source for manual recovery... it's just not an elegant way [IF something better is available with me not seeing it].

@Steffie The "Share" button will export all the values and copy the theme code to your clipboard. You simply share it with yourself.
To explain this in a bit more detail: The share functionality takes the current values of the color input fields. In case you have changed the color inputs, but didn't save them, the share button won't export the currently selected theme, but your new progress. You can do exports in between edits.
-
@luetage Faaaaaaaaaaabulous, many thanks.
-
@Steffie I'm not sure about this anyway. Does everyone think "Share" is confusing? In all other languages the equivalent of "export" is in use. I picked the word share, because I have the hope this will encourage people to share their themes and additionally I'd expect some sort of dialog when dealing with an exporting function, but I get the feeling it's just not clear enough. We can rename it back to "Export" any time. I honestly don't know what makes more sense.
-
@luetage It confused me, but that does not mean necessarily that it would confuse anyone else. I just didn't think it through. My wrong assumption was that as there was an Import function, & i wanted to do an Export but there was no so-marked button, i just wrongly assumed there was no export function. It did not cross my mind to try the Share button, as i presumed that was for me somehow posting some link online.
Now that you explained it to me i get it, & it worked fine.
-
@Steffie The issue is you're not the first, lol.
-
The thought was sharing themes, was it?
{"themeName":"Brown","colorBg":"#000000","colorFg":"#ffffff","colorHi":"#ff8800","colorBtn":"#0a0a0a","colorDrop":"#171108","colorLi":"#ffff33","colorLi2":"#ff8800"}
I use it with this custom code:#submenu { background-color: var(--colorDrop) !important; color: var(--colorDropFg) !important; } #submenu a:focus, #submenu a:hover, #submenu li.active > a { background-color: var(--colorDropHi) !important; }
(just tried gmail basic HTML with invert filter )

@potmeklecbohdan Nice theme, thanks for sharing.
By the way, I updated the first post of this thread and included all themes that were previously available through the zip file. Themes that you have previously saved as file are compatible with our current setup. When you paste the contents of the file into the import field, it will be imported without problem.

Here's mine
{"themeName":"DΓ©gradΓ©","colorBg":"#170706","colorFg":"#ffd4e4","colorHi":"#ffd7e5","colorBtn":"#fff1f8","colorDrop":"#1b0806","colorLi":"#f5b0c4","colorLi2":"#fcf6e0"}
I'm using it with some CSS mods.

Great theme! Reminds me of a cake I dig

version 2.2
Last release in 2018. The update is up on webstore, but could take a few hours to arrive in your installs.
This release fixes the white flash on custom themes. Previously when a custom theme loaded, the color variables needed a little time to kick in. I made some code changes which address this problem. I couldn't get it to disappear completely, as the header still slightly flashes two thirds of the time, but the flash on the body should be gone completely. At least I hope so, it's the way it behaves on my installation. Feedback is appreciated.
I also made a few updates targeting the edit area for custom themes. The color inputs look a lot nicer now and the theming should be more consistent overall.
What I forgot to mention in the 2.0 release is that you can use the
TAB
key in the User CSS input now, which makes it easier writing correctly formatted CSS directly. The input will translate a tab to 4 spaces, which makes it compatible with text editors.Another point we haven't really talked about in detail are translations. The language being used is dependent on your browser language. If you have set one language in Vivaldi, but want to use another language for the Forum mod, this isn't possible. That's standard behaviour of chrome extensions, which don't allow choosing the language in the extension settings, but will always read it out from the browser settings. And of course you have to set your desired language in Vivaldi Forum settings too.
Looking at the activity of communities on Vivaldi Forum, I believe a Russian and a Japanese translation would make sense. So if you speak Russian/Japanese and English, I would be delighted if you considered a translation. The only thing I can offer in return is credits in the extension, which should bring pride, fame and fortune (in this exact order).
Happy New Year in advance!

@luetage Thanks a lot for the new version. We did receive a Xmas version and now a New Year's version!
Happy New Year to all VF Mod contributors (and to anyone else reading this message!).
