Could we install extensions outside Chrome Store?
-
Of course, i regularly install and update my extensions manually, in extensions page enable developer mode, pack your extensions after unzipping them, drag the crx in the page, there, installed.
-
You don't even need developer mode for dragging a .crx on the extension page.
-
but you need it if you have only a zip (for example ublock origin betas on its github) and you need to pack it manually to crx, that's why it's better to leave it enabled in any case.

Only be sure are clean, sometimes are bundled with addonjet adware

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chrome-extension-source-v/jifpbeccnghkjeaalbbjmodiffmgedin
Get that then you can install from Opera & Firefox too along Chrome. It's a source viewer and installer - very handy.

You must always do this. Even the Chrome store is full of those.

Well, yes, but rate of infections is higher on alternative stores :3

@An_dz Not only Adware. I've found some examples of outright malware too. One grabbed usernames and passwords and sent them to a remote server.
Yes, I've reported it and in the meantime it got removed, but that says a lot about the quality control of Google ...I personally don't trust any of them enough to directly install them from the store but download them and in doubt remove the stuff I don't want inside - and the auto updater too because there were already cases, where an Extension author was bought out by a company and the company distributed their crap via the auto update system, e.g. one famous example from the past:

@QuHno Yes, I agree. Google is quite slow to remove infected extensions. It should be have a protection like for android apps - well, rarely it shows false positives. But usually, apps marked "risky" are risky.

CWS is a huge mess. Most extensions are gimmicky at best, and usually one needs to create account to some website inorder to use the offered extension which at best only tracks your internet traffic offering you some gimmicky "feature" lol
