We will be doing maintenance work on Vivaldi Translate on the 11th of May starting at 03:00 (UTC) (see the time in your time zone).
Some downtime and service disruptions may be experienced.
Thanks in advance for your patience.
Adjusting item numbers in URL drop down / More adblock compatiblity work – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 3658.3

@npro: It was because I had the ANGLE backend flag (chrome://flags/#use-angle) set for D3D11On12 to resolve some performance issues in a previous build. I set it back to default and that resolved the issue. I'll report this as a bug, as this wasn't happening in the older build I enabled D3D11On12 in.
-
@GT500 I don't see any angle flag in my chrome://flags, maybe you mean a parameter? Btw what does a Windows related angle parameter have to do with Linux?
"ANGLE (Almost Native Graphics Layer Engine) is an open source, cross-platform graphics engine abstraction that translates OpenGL ES 2/3 calls to DirectX 9, 11, OpenGL, Vulkan or Metal API calls.[2][3][4][5] It is a portable version of OpenGL but with limitations of OpenGL ES standard.[6][7]
The API is mainly designed to bring up a high-performance OpenGL compatibility to Microsoft Windblows and to web browsers such as Chromium by translating OpenGL calls to Direct3D"
Using D3D11On12 is weird, that would apply if you would be running Vivaldi through WINE I suppose, which is "experimenting" I guess.
-
@npro: It's called "Choose ANGLE graphics backend". It should be a flag in Chromium on every platform. I know it's available on Windows and Android (I haven't checked Linux and I don't have Apple products to test).
D3D11On12 is a Microsoft mapping layer that allows running a Direct3D 11 application on Direct3D 12, however there's more than just mapping of API calls, and it's supposed to be more efficient than Direct3D 11. They explain it better on the Microsoft Github page.
https://github.com/microsoft/D3D11On12Since I run on Windows 10 (soon to be Windows 11) it makes sense for me to use it as it's supposed to be more efficient. I only switched it on because I was having weird performance issues related to watching YouTube videos in private windows (I often leave a private window open for days or weeks at a time to watch videos in, while also sometimes watching YouTube videos in normal windows). Vivaldi seemed to perform better on YouTube when ANGLE was set to D3D11On12, however at the moment it's not using hardware accelerated video decoding when set for D3D11On12 (I think it was prior to me updating to this build, but I don't know when this started as I was a few builds out of date).

@GT500 lol you should have said you are on Windows from the beginning, when you have the Fedora logo as your avatar and you give no other info elsewhere what else can you expect others to think.
Frankly the rest does not concern me at all, I'm allergic to anything Micro$oft. I guess you can report your findings though.
-
@npro: I've been using that as an avatar for more than 20 years. I often forget that it's the Fedora project logo. It didn't even occur to me to point out that I'm on Windows, and avatar not withstanding I should have known better considering I used to work for software companies.
-
@pathduck: Dang. So that means I'm arbitrarily "kneecapped" at 20.
Thanks.

Dang
Just wait until they increase it, we're testing Snapshots remember
Or, open the
Preferences
file in a good text editor, search fordropdown_size
and increase the value after the : to what you want. Your call, your risk of messing up and nuking all your settings -
@pathduck: You know me too well: Happy to go mucking in files where I don't belong.
However, in my Preferences file, there is no text string "dropdown_size." Not even any occurrence of "dropdown".
Edited to add: Oops. I was looking in User Data\Default.install. Found the correct Preferences file now in User Data\Default. Found the "dropdown_size" text string, changed the 20 to 200, but Vivaldi is still only showing 20 items.
-
@pathduck: Now, to go on a different tangent, I do see multiple
"OMNI_RESULT_TYPED_HISTORY_SEARCH","url" strings with the items that should appear on the Search Bar drop-down, but don't. The only item(s) that appear in the Search Bar drop-down are items searched from the Address Bar. The correct items for the Search Bar drop-down are there as individual "OMNI_RESULT_TYPED_HISTORY_SEARCH","url" items, but not displayed. -
@wpcoe Then you're looking in the wrong
Preferences
~/AppData/Local/Vivaldi/User Data/Default $ jq . Preferences | grep dropdown_size "dropdown_size": 30,
-
@pathduck: Yeah, I found the correct file, but changed the 20 (which it said) to 200, and I still only see 20 items in the drop-down list.
Hmmm. When I set it to 200 in the Preferences file and then start Vivaldi and go to Tools > Settings > Address Bar > Drop-Down Maximum size, it says 1337, but as soon as I move the slider it changes to 20. Maybe that gives a hint to what might be wrong on my Vivaldi setup?
I did a test with 35 in the Preferences, and again in Tools > Settings > Address Bar > Drop-Down Maximum size it shows 35 until I move the slider, and then it changes to 20.
-
@wpcoe Did you check the setting if it is set to 200 in the UI?
Did you do this while the browser was closed?Look, there's no point me trying to troubleshoot what you're doing. They will change this to allow more results, maybe not 200 or 1337 but enough for most.
If you can't make it work just wait.
I just knew me bragging about changing it would backfire with more troubleshooting others messing
-
@pathduck: Okay, I'll leave you alone.

Yeah, don't mess with the slider ok? It resets it - funny that, it's like they don't want us to hack the JSON directly
Maybe that gives a hint to what might be wrong on my Vivaldi setup?
There's nothing wrong with your setup - you're just changing stuff you're not supposed to change.
