The Address bar is probably the most used feature of any browser, so improvements are always welcomed, and changes are always challenging, because of the potential impact to users. However I agree with / join to @Tealing when asking "what was wrong with the previous behavior?" Was it maybe a maintenance nightmare? Maybe too many bugs I was not aware of? The ability to pick and order the address bar result types was absolutely awesome and afaik unique to Vivaldi. The new feature feels like exchanging my preferences by the algorithm's, it feels like having less options, it feels like the experience is being shrunk, so I guess it is somehow unnatural to Vivaldi users. As a work in progress I guess it is ok but not at the expense of definitely removing unique features in the final implementation. It is not always about less clicks, sometimes it is about the pleasure to click on what I want and enjoy
This is the correct response, what was wrong with the old address bar behavior? What is the need to change the address bar when the old one was working just fine. No one asked for it. I want the typed history back.

Reading the blog post usually helps
we’ve had separate desktop and mobile versions. We’re working towards a unified implementation for better performance, though this may cause new issues or regressions.

Why wasn't the desktop version chosen as the better option then? Vivaldi team should put all their efforts to bringing their ad-blocking to "feature parity" with ublock origin like they have said (I really really doubt that statement). It's mission critical to bring it before the extension stops working. Why meddle with address bar now? I think that they are just trying to do too much (too much new features too fast, too little polishing & fixing them... and at the same time they talk about how they are a small team). I already have been eyeing my options after ublock origin stops working on some chromium browsers (not all, some have pledged to support the extension.. but not vivaldi), firefox is horrible, just horrible, but it seems to be the next browser I'm gonna use to have the ublock origin features available.

Because the Desktop version cannot be ported to Mobile
-
So instead vivaldi chooses to make the desktop version worse? Ok.
-
@Tealing The idea is to make the new one at least as good, preferably better; patience please.
-
I have directly/indirectly asked/pleaded few times if the options to choose what to show in the address bar are going to be a part of the new version but haven't heard anything regarding that. I have taken that as an answer that it isn't going to come back.

The suggestions from the new Address Bar are much more sensible to me. I'm a long-term Snapshot user and I've been avoiding the Address Bar so far, but I'm tempted to give it a try now.
The first hurdle to me is, what are the keyboard shortcuts? How do you customize them? I don't use the arrow keys when I'm in the "typing mode". On most apps on Mac, Ctrl+P and Ctrl+N are to move to the previous and next lines.
-
Why have "patience" when you already have the superior "Quick Commands (F2 or mouse gesture)"?
Address Bar is so... Netscape/IE/Google/peasantway...

Why do you seem to be a very stressed out Vivaldi user?
Well, guess. I have voiced some of my concerns already. Shouldn't have to ask. Or should I only comment here in a role of a bottom kisser?

@yngve well said!

To be as good it would need to let me prioritize as it did before. Not all users are the same and the flexibility Vivaldi affords us is what sets it apart.
-
@Tealing No. But because of the size Vivaldi is right now with Developers, I think they are trying their best to keep Everyone as pleased as possible.
-
@tealing: What items do you want to hide and why? Do you actually see unwanted items with the new address field suggestions?

It’s a goal we’re actively pursuing. It has steadily improved over time. However, whenever we add one of the many less commonly used syntax/features; it isn’t a release-headline feature — or even a snapshot headline feature.

One of the primary motivations was sharing code/experience with Vivaldi’s mobile products. The user experience should be more similar and predictable.
The key problem with the old address field was that the suggestions quality was too low and often unpredictable to users. If the single Best Match suggestion was wrong, it meant that you had to scan through the entire list to find what you were looking for. The “cost” when Best Match’s one suggestion was wrong was quite high compared to the new implementation that shows multiple good suggestions one after the other.
The category system had some fundamental problems. The duplicated suggestions resulted from their fit into several categories. For example, some suggestions could be typed suggestions, bookmarks, history entries, and open tab suggestions at once. Some items could even appear multiple times in the same category.

Just to address some of the points you made.
The top suggestion when I type
b
is booking.com. I never use that site nor do I have it bookmarked. It never appeared in the old address field because it instead would make suggestions based on how I prioritized them.I fear the homogenization of the browser across mobile and desktop. I use both but do not want the desktop to be dumbed down so to speak by taking away customization options just so it can be a more seamless experience for mobile users. I suspect I am in the minority on that but that's my 2 cents.

Of course I do, you removed the ability to choose what to see.

Ok. Are you in a position to say anything when you have ublock origin "element picker & zapper" features available?
