21.12.24 | Sync'd Data Lost + New Encryption Key
-
@far4 I agree to all.

@DoctorG
What can happen if a person connects another smartphone to the sync?
Will he lose all his data too?
Because they will be perceived by the server as outdated?And so on and so forth.
It turns out that the first device, if it was clean (empty data) is transformed into an eraser, essentially a “virus tool” that destroys data on all other devices connected later.
I'm curious, what happens if we work with such a device (not yet connected to sync), add bookmarks, change a few notes, and then try to turn on sync? Will the data from such a device be perceived as newer? Or will it be erased as well?
Hm. -
I hadn't any personal issue with Sync but a feature request could be posted so when logging into Sync add a choice to choose if the device will send its settings to Sync or Sync will update the device with the saved data on server.
I think this would be the most clean & easy option to avoid the Sync issues that some users have related with overwritten Sync data with 'blank' devices.
Its toss a thought in air.

I have just installed Vivaldi on Fedora 41 and I can't see the results of sync'ing working: no bookmarks, notes etc. However, Setting / Sync page says 'Download: Done; Upload Done' within the last 5 minutes.
What am I missing?? -
With all the craziness of the past weeks, I have patiently waited for the solution to come. I'm an avid user of Vivaldi.
I see that the sync issue has apparently been resolved, yet my information continues not to be available. No passwords, etc. on my desktop.
My android continues to work seamlessly. And I have tried to use it to update syncs to the desktop, but it is ignored.
How can I get my information back?
Thanks. -
Bro, thanks to all of you! I have got my data back. You saved my day!!!

I have two Vivaldi browsers syncing, one for home and one for work. Somehow the one for work starts to show conflicts and cannot sync. It shows "Upload: Conflict with another user's data occurred", and the synced tabs shows two machines instead of one. (Normally the synced tabs icon would show other machines, excluding current machine).
I tried numerous times, includes logging out and back in, renaming machine, etc. No thing worked. I end up resetting the remote data. After that my other machine won't show up in synced tabs when I need one of its tabs. Unfortunately I don't have remote access, and won't be able to access that machine for several days.
I'm also not sure if I lost some of the un-synced bookmarks added yesterday. -
@Vaporize
Hi, a user report the tab syncing takes hours on his system.
I cant reproduce it, synced two installs of Vivaldi a few minutes ago and tabs of other devices was updated immediately.Cheers, mib

@arthur As i know there was dataloss in sync server the last week.
You should have synced with the first device you had the complete data on it to upload to Sync server and then sync the new install. -
Hi all,
After the tragic sync incident, I have lost my years of passwords/bookmarks/history...etc., same as all other users here.
In my case now, I have already moved to new PC at this time and during the transition the incident happed before I was able to install and sync Vivaldi on the new PC.In my case now, I have a manual backup from the old setup as below:
- The "default" profile folder from the latest Vivaldi setup.
- the saved encryption key that was used for this profile.
When I try to restore the profile folder manually, I get most of the data except mostly the passwords because of the encryption.
My question is:
Is there any possibility to use the old "profile folder" & "the saved encryption key" to get all my data again?
I mean to use the encryption key I have to decrypt/restore the old passwords list and any other encrypted data?I really appreciate if any of the Vivaldi support team can help with this if there any chance because losing these passwords have disastrous consequences for me.
Thanks in advance...

@NEO701
Hi, I didn't lose anything, but some users had a bad experience.
If you can still reach the old PC it is easy, export the passwords there and import it at the new PC.
The encryption key is to encrypt your user data on the sync server, not to encrypt/decrypt your files on a system.
Maybe other users have an idea but I fear there is no way to get your passwords back if you wiped the old PC already. -
@mib2berlin Hi,
Thanks for your response!
The old PC is not available anymore, I have the Vivaldi profile folder which includes the passwords, but it can't be restored the same as the other profile folder content due to the encryption.
Thats why I am thinking if there is a way to be able to retrieve the passwords using the old profile folder and the encryption key. -
Okay now I'm sitting in front of my home machine and entered my encryption key, now this machine says "Upload: Conflict with another user's data occurred".
The thing is, I reset remote data from machine A (work machine), it worked well, but machine B (home machine) was kicked off sync server. Now I let machine B join sync, it still conflicts.
I kind of don't want to reset remote data, because I suspect if I reset data from machine B, machine A would be kicked off. And by next workday when I have access to machine A, it will again conflicts. The loop might be infinite.
Unfortunately I can't access both machines at the same time, only one at a time. It's a pain. -
I've reset remote data from machine B, and machine A is now kicked off sync server. Next Monday this cycle would restart. I guess there is no way to bring sync back for me.
-
Just to be clear, all I need is to know if there is a way to decrypt the old profile using the saved key to get mainly the passwords from the old profile backup.
- If I used the same password from the old profile, will it be able to decrypt the old profile?
- If there is a way to use the old decryption key which I already have with the support of the Vivaldi team to decrypt the old profile, or at least the passwords list?
I suppose theoretically this can be done as long as the decryption key is available...
I really appreciate prompt feedback from Vivaldi officials on this point and hope this can be done finally.

@Vaporize
Hi, sync work on 15 Vivaldi installs without issues, doubled devices disappear after some days.
Sometimes I choose a different device name, it appear on top of the list then in the windows panel.
I guess you don't get conflicts with a different device name.
If you get it running once it will work flawlessly as it does for Years until the big outage.Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin I don't know if doubled devices disappear or not. But sync shows conflicts means nothing is getting synced. I do get conflicts with a different name - that's the first thing I do, I logged out from sync settings page, and when logging again I changed the device name. Only resetting remote data fix the conflicts.
It was running perfectly until the big outage this month. After Vivaldi team fixed their sync server I re-entered the encryption key and both machines synced well for a day or two. After that the conflicts came and things fell apart. -
