Vivaldi 7 | New Layout & User's Disagreements
-
I agree that the recent changes were annoying; we usually see a whole lot of complaints like this with each new release, but I have learnt that it takes very little effort to fix things. Last time, it was the stupid centring of buttons and fields on the Address Bar; this time it was UI and Menu spacing, plus an ugly theme. I have long used my own themes, so the latter is a non-issue for me.
Whatever the changes are, the Community is always here to help out if any users cannot figure it out for themselves.
It is never a good idea to use an outdated browser, and every minor update with Chromium fixes some security issues.
When I was Beta testing for Serif, we had similar complaints for every upgrade to PagePlus. There were hundreds of genuine improvements, but some users only saw the changes that forced them to learn something new.

@Zalex108 great, but how do i get rid of this hideous context menu design? it literally looks like it's made toddler-safe
ok, got, forgot to check "compact menu layout". but i still hate that new design.
-
Well, I've held off from updating to 7 because of the UI changes.
I'll echo everyone else's complaints - don't ever make drastic UI changes without making it opt-in at upgrade time!
This is one of the reasons I disable auto-updates on pretty much everything, even if I generally install them immediately anyway. If I'd come in one day and just screwed-up the UI on me I'd have been furious and probably getting myself banned here on the forums!
Now I'm prepared to take on the upgrade and follow the guides to restore as much as possible, so wish me luck!

I don't really like this new UI, and the menu bar on xfce4 is not aligned and cannot be adjusted or reverted back to the original version, so I only reached 6.9 and hold the version, not upgrading anymore.

@yylt
Hi, downgrade is not recommended, you may have a broken user profile now.
A few clicks and you can get the old design back:https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/102198/guide-v-7-user-interface
Or download old themes:

Well, done the upgrade and it doesn't seem that different at all - maybe because I already use my own modified theme and it still seems to be using that?
Mostly it's just wasted space in the tab bar and maybe in the panels. Going to have a little play with options now...

@Martyn
Hi and yes, it add 20 pixel horizontal in the tab bar, check the density settings in Appearance.
If you had a customized theme it doesn't change, except density iirc.Cheers, mib

Yep, seems all I had to do was enable the 2 "compact" options and it's all looking pretty normal for me. Relief!
Pretty sure this is do with already having my own theme selected - a handy tip for anyone else in future I would suggest. Pick the theme you like and re-save it it as your own and it should then remain through any upgrades.

I haven't upgraded my browser on my personal system after I saw the UI mess on my work laptop,...
is there any way to upgrade to latest while keeping the whole design of v6.9?
I really hate the icons in the current version, they are an eyesore to me.
the rounded corners don't even fit my desktop theme on mate desktop with a windows 9x/NT inspired window theme.the version I currently still have installed looks much better then the 7.x version that is current.
-
@martinmoosbauer There is a way to adjust how round or square your tabs are in the settings
There are also ways to change icons, but to change all icons you'll probably want to find a theme that best suits you instead of doing it one by one.
But it is Vivaldi, there's a high chance you can poke around the visual settings and get it looking as close as possible to what you want.
-
@martinmoosbauer Just read the first post of this discussion, there is the link to the guide to have the interface as in version 6.9.
-
@Folgore101 I just read what is linked on the first post, does that mean my custom theme on 6.9 has the icons in it?
-
@martinmoosbauer I don't know how you customized your theme. If you used the old icons, just set "Use the icon set" to "Subtle". If you customized all the icons they should remain as such, but i've never tried.

A major part of Vivaldi's appeal has always been customizability, in fact, that's why I came to the browser at all.
That said, while I can see the appeal of Vivaldi 7.0's floating tabs, I personally prefer the old tabs which connected to the address bar, and was quite disappointed to not find an option to toggle the floating tabs in the settings.
I would be very appreciative of such an option being implemented so I, and others, may keep finding Vivaldi flexible and easy enough to make the perfect browser for us individually with ease. -
