V7 | Downloads Removed Automatic (1) Addition
-
Would be easier for some users if there were modifierkey+mouselick on media to save directly (without a Save popup) in Download Panel, that would result in numbered filenames.
i remember (right or wrong, who knows) something similar was in very old Opera Presto decades ago.
-
@DoctorG Yes Ctrl+Click on Images to Save Them is the default behaviour in Opera 12.18. It brings up a save dialogue where one can choose the folder or change the name. It does not add a numbered suffix to duplicate file names.
-
In Chrome and Edge:, save image as: image.jpg.
Try to save same image: image (1).jpgOk, that's nice. I already saved that image. Move on.
In Vivaldi: Save image as: image.jpg.
Try to save same image: image.jpg.
Would you like to replace image.jpg?
God fucking damn it Vivaldi!Might be a nothing burger, but also an unnecessary frustration derived of a misguided sense of being different, instead of consistent.

Hi,
AFAIK,
The needing of rename or replace the same named file, is the old way.To add a number was inherited from Chromium, because of this were many complains.
As always,
Any changes has it's own fans.Let's see what about the FR.

ZZalex108 moved this topic from Vivaldi for Windows on

I was very unpleasantly surprised by this change. If I had known what was coming, I would never have switched to version 7. For a browser that prides itself on maximum user customization, I wouldn't have expected the removal of features. Ideally, it should remain as an option. Who wants to use it and who doesn't doesn't. Although I can't think of any reasons for not using it. In any case, it's a key feature for me, and if it's not fixed soon, after years of happy use, goodbye Vivaldi.

@oscarkk
Hi, the Vivaldi developers start working on a fix for the the fix, many users complained about the addition of (1).Cheers, mib

This post is deleted! -
@mib2berlin So hopefully it'll be quick. This is a feature that the train doesn't go through. So far a forced switch to Edge, but the longer the situation lasts, the less likely we are to return to Vivaldi in the company and at home. Too bad, it was an excellent browser. Anyway, the update arrived today and no change and nothing in the snapshot either.

@oscarkk
This is now a feature request VB-110404, check the change logs for it.
To my knowledge the (n) work if you have Auto Download enabled.
Do you have a link to a page you use?
I download 3 files in a month, I would never noticed the change anyway.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin Like this. The fact that it somehow works on automatic downloads doesn't solve our problem. We mainly download images that can be saved via the right click and the save image as option. There are dozens of images to download daily, mostly from servers where they are all named the same in each set. So without the option to automatically rename, manually renaming each image is a step backwards and a considerable complication. If you download three files a month, you may not care. For us, it's one of the most basic and used features we've lost. Without it, although Vivaldi otherwise has a lot of useful features, its use loses its meaning, because in this case the negatives outweigh the positives. I understand that there is a group of people who are uncomfortable with automatic renaming, but the way we change the behavior of an application in a directive way to please one group while frustrating the work of another group (who were comfortable with the behavior) is unfortunate to say the least. If anyone felt the need to tinker, it was only by choice (do you want to automatically rename or not). So for now we use Vivaldi for normal browsing, but when we need to download images we are forced to use Edge. This schizophrenia, however, can't last forever.

@oscarkk
I understand, as I mentioned the Vivaldi team will add this as setting so at some point you can get back to Vivaldi for your workflow.Cheers, mib

@Pesala
It's not about that, at least not for me. As someone who does a lot of downloading, it's more about efficiency. The (1) is there to tell me I've already got what I need without having to hit Save to see if I get a popup.I'll be voting for a reversion/toggle on this
-
I also vote for a toggle option. This change not only affects "Save Link As" but also when saving images (both using "Save image as" and Ctrl+S when images are on its own tabs). This is a severe usability issue in the cases mentioned above.
Btw, another toggle for unique names when saving pages would be a nice thing too, imo.
