Snapshot 1.0.340.7 - Silent Tabs For Users, Netflix support and HTML5 notifications
-
Remember that while there is no final, Vivaldi doesn't earn any money, and thus, can't hire new devs…
It's a balancing issue here. -
It's slow as hell to start here, but my guess is it's not an issue of CPU or memory, but more an issue of disk access speed which is very slow here too…
-
I think the UI is a small part of the performances issue : it can be summed up by having one more website open (as the UI is more or less a website).
So what is missing is more hooks to tell the browser to freeze everything when reduced than pure code optimizations (which are necessary too, don't get me wrong). -
Sometimes it's hard to believe this is not a stable version, keep up the good work! Here are my two cents on the current snapshot:
-
Lastpass extension sometimes won't open the popup, and when that happens it will work again only after disabling and enabling the extension, this doesn't happen in other webkit based browsers.
-
Whatsapp web seems to be working on this snapshot which is nice, but there's no sound when a new message comes out and I can't seem to download and open the audio files.

"The advantage of 64 bit is that we have 64 bit processors and 64 bit operating systems these days."
If you understand how bit width works, and how and when it actually contributes to software functionality, you know that this statement lacks real meaning. The presence of 64-bit OSes and hardware is not a reason for every kind of software and every kind of task to be 64-bit. For certain trivial and repetitive/incremental tasks, 64 bits is slower because it necessarily uses longer memory address identifiers which can slow I/O speed. Further, it runs out of memory faster, unless you have huge amounts of RAM, causing a swappy condition, and swap is tons slower than direct RAM access, so it slows everything.
So it's a matter of the right tool for the right task. You would not use a C-30 for a dogfight, or an F-16 to fight fires or to fly from Las Vegas to Big Bear with just your family. The fact that jets exist is not a reason to abandon propeller-driven flight.

Thanks for the information. Vivaldi me removed.

vivaldi need bigger icons for windows 10 start menu

Yeah. There are six generations of i7 processors (with as few cores as 4 and clock speeds as low as 2.6 GHz and as many cores as 8 with clock speeds up to 4.7 GHz) and a multitude of systems and bus widths which they are used, so they're clearly not all equal. I just see these comments "I have an i7 processor so clearly my system is powerful, but Vivaldi sux," but I don't recall speed complaints citing another processor specifically.

Thank you. Got my fix for videos. I wasn't aware snapshot doesn't support chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra.
All good now, thank you for leading me to right direction!

The bug where open tabs cannot be clicked on to use them still exists, like in the previous 2 snapshots Please have a look at this. It's pretty bad when you have a lot of tabs open and you have to close them one by one until you "find" one that is still accessible.
Second. I have to click 2 times into the search field to activate it, means to be able to type stuff into that field. At least during the last two snapshots. Pretty annoying because if you only click once, you start typing and notice only later that it's been in vain.

Ayespy,
I've noticed the i7 trend too. Since I'm going to be moving up from a '630 system to one of the new i7 'Lake processors it would be nice to know if it's just my imagination.

To be literally correct, stercum is Latin, but stercus is more widely used, and the latin words for cattle are bubula (beef/cattle) or bovis (cow), and for bull, taurus. So you would say "stercus bubula" or "stercus bovis" or, most literally, "stercum tauri" Bulbus IS a Latin word, and it means an edible bulb, or an onion. Just sayin.'

I agree with jaxtraw.
When I built my current system back in 2005, 64-bit hardware, operating systems and programs were unusual and often expensive so I used a 32-bit OS.
That was then. Fifteen years later 16-bit NCSA Mosaic won't run on Windows 7 x64 but so what? I am moving on and putting 32-bit programs to sleep if they can't (or won't) change just like I had to do with 8-bit and 16-bit programs.
Consider it evolution in action.

Dear AYESPY:
I'm impressed is there anything you DON"T know?? Don't take as bad just an offhand compliment.

Win 7 64, 8 Gig,32 Viv
No need to go into detail you've heard it before. Loaded fast, high hopes, after 1/2 hr. CPU OK but free memory eaten up, still can't use regularly.
PS: I've looked for it but where is top sites file located? I've forgotten, sorry.

All of this just makes me a bit more confused as to which version of Vivaldi to run. The thing is, the 64 Bit version of Vivaldi on Windows runs noticeably faster for me than the 32-bit. and is a bit smoother. This is on a machine with an i5 and 6GB of RAM.

Thanks for your answer, logytech. Good to get some more insight on the release of Vivaldi.
The only thing I didn't quite understand is the downloader and reader part, but okay!
