Sync settings and bookmarks?
-
Hi The_Solutor, I already tried this with my dropbox drive but got double database files and messed up my profile.
It is not so important for me but thanks for the tip.Cheers, mib

It will work, especially for linux where vivaldi isn't ties with the UUID like on windows.
You did something wrong I presume

Hi The_Solutor, check again to set my profile folder to the Dropbox directory but doesn´t work.
If I run Vivaldi on two systems at the same time I get several conflicted file, for example:Current Tabs (linux-twjz's conflicted copy 2016-04-29)
May it is not so simple.
Can we open a new thread with kind of HowTo?
Will may help some user with Dropbox or other Cloud systems.Cheers, mib
EDIT: Kind of work but have several History files now.
Have problems with different settings for Laptop and workstation, page size for example -
Let me ask,
since Vivaldi is based upon Chromium, which is open source, is there a specific way not to use the original Sync mechanism?
-
Chrome and Chromium sync via Google servers. Vivaldi wants its own sync, not dependent on Google.
And that's to say nothing of the fact that sync is in the browser, not in the engine. Vivaldi only uses the same engine as Chrome. It is not the same browser - so it does not have the same traits and features that Chrome and Chromium have.

EDIT: Kind of work but have several History files now.
Have problems with different settings for Laptop and workstation, page size for exampleI'm not sure how the dropbox folder is mounted under linux and how close to a real disk it is.
I'm not a dropbox user at all.
Cloud drive under windows was what I did test for various reasons
#1 It's visible by the OS as a real drive, unlike the native apps.
#2 It's cached locally
#3 It's agnostic about the cloud service used
#4 can be encrypted as any other local disk
So looked like a pretty good solution to place there the whole profile.
But in linux case maybe will be better to keep the profile local, and sync just some relevant files using rsync (say bookmarks, login data).
Whatever, I my suggestions were, just as suggestions, given the argument is anything but concluded by my experiments, and also given it includes three OSes, and a zillion of cloud drives flavors.
So no, I don't wan't to open a "tutorial" about something I don't know "like my pockets", like in the current case.
But feel free to use this thread about that argument, the more users will try to figure it out, the more experiments/success/failures, the more knowledge we will get.
Then we can think to a proper how to (unless that will be obsoleted by the official sync)

You can mount cloud spaces (WebDAV and whatnot) as directories in Linux, so letting people choose where to store their settings might suffice.
But yeah, sync would be good, if just to keep my dual-boot in sync with Windows (I can let it go just yet).

HI,
when I see many people talking about storing settings and bookmarks on the cloud or on private server I hear that could be great to first offering to store this kind of data on OwnCloud. I talk about OwnCloud due to the fact it could be installed on host offer or on private server.
And API is also public :
Or on a private cloud named Cozy : http://cozy.io/fr/apps/ (where quickmarks, files (settings)) could be used.Have a nice day.

The one and only reason why I haven't switch to Vivaldi!
What good does it make to be able to tweak Vivaldi if any time I switch to another PC, change OS or simply want to start clean on another device, I'll have to start all over again my Vivaldi setup, to use it, the way I wanted it?
I love what you've done with Vivaldi so far and will continue to support the project, but please keep us updated on this topic as much as you can since it's the one and only feature that will really make most of the people finally switch to it, as their daily browser!

+1 for being able to sync settings via personal cloud accounts like GDrive or OwnCloud.
+1000000 for being able to sync custom search engines too! Chrome doesn't let us do that and I have a lot of these that I always have to recreate!!!!

Here is what I have done to sync vivaldi across a bunch of linux systems.
I use a service called odrive. You can find it at odrive.com. You can use it for free for this setup, and it works well. odrive links you to your cloud services. In linux, it can do this at the command line through python. You can find it here: https://odrive.readme.io/v1.0/docs/odrive-sync-agent. I use Amazon Cloud Drive, but you can use any service that odrive will link to and support. Some examples are Amazon, Dropbox, Box, One Drive, One Drive for Business, Google Drive, any FTP or SFTP site, or webdave. It's pretty versatile, and there are others I did not list.
So, I installed the odrive command line client and synced my Amazon Cloud Drive to it, created a folder called local, then did a symlink to it for the vivaldi folder.
ln -s /home/user/.config/vivaldi/ /media/odrive/Amazon\ Cloud\ Drive/local/
I then copied all the data from /home/user/.config/vivaldi to the vivaldi folder now in /media/odrive/Amazon\ Cloud\ Drive/local/vivaldi
cp -r /home/user/.config/vivaldi/* /media/odrive/Amazon\ Cloud\ Drive/local/vivaldi/
Then I deleted everything in the /home/user/.config/vivaldi/ folder.
rm -rf /home/user/.config/vivaldi/*
Now that the files are in the odrive folder, I run a sync of the folder so it goes up to Amazon. When I get to another computer, I have odrive sync the files from Amazon down to that PC, then I run Vivaldi and all my notes and information has been updated from the other PC.
You could easily just run a cron job so this is done every so often, then it's automated. I haven't don that yet.
After the sync, I run Vivaldi and everything, including the settings, will be there ready to go. Even all the same tabs, notes, speed dials, extensions, etc. etc. are ready for me.
Be sure however, before running Vivaldi that you are using the same version in case there are changes. Also make sure you don't leave vivaldi open and running on any other machines as there might be a clash somewhere.
It's worked for me for a couple of months without any issues on Linux.
Another option I used before that was to use a program called EverHelper. You can find it in the Chrome Web Store as an extension. It will back up all your bookmarks. So, for the SpeedDial, it will back them up as well as they are just bookmarks. If all you need is bookmarks and SpeedDial backed up, it's pretty good. 15000 bookmarks can be synced to the cloud for free. Beyond that, it's $5 a month. You can also access them in the cloud if need be at http://everhelper.me

It would be nice, if Vivaldi the sync functionality had: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_browser_synchronizers
-
@Gwen-Dragon any updates/ETA?
