Extensions not loading when opening links in a new tab
-
Hi,
I can confirm the issues mentioned in this thread.I would say it started around 2-3 weeks ago - only with AdGuard being enabled and with opening it in new tabs.
I tried every possible method mentioned in this thread: still something is going on between Vivaldi and AdGuard.As a workaround, I use uBlock Origin Lite - but that's not a substitute for AdGuard.
If you need further information, please let me know, I will gladly provide more information.My system: Windows 11 Pro 24H2 with latest updates, Vivaldi 7.1.3570.54

Hey @Woife!
I'm sorry that you experience the same issue (and a bit happy that I'm not the only one
).
I've just did another test, on another machine, on completely different, independent network. I can reproduce this issue consistently throughout all the devices. To sum up:
- I have tried this on 3 physical machines and 1 virtual, on 2 distinct networks.
- In every case, opening new links in new backgroud tabs resulted in Adguard not loading immediately. It only works after a refresh.
- The only way to make it work correctly is by using
start vivaldi --disable-vivaldi
command. - This happens regardless of browser and / or system settings, as it happened on both, fresh and already in-use OSes, and on freshly installed and in-use and tweaked Vivaldi browsers.
At this point I think we should change the topic of this thread to "Adguard not loading when opening links in a new tab", as when I was starting it, I didn't have full picture of the problem, though I don't think it's possible to change it now.

Hi Team!
I'm having extension issues with email trackers, that I assume are built for Chrome, and they don't function.
Mail meteor and EngageBay I the ones I've tried.
I really don't want to flip back to using Chrome to get these to work (🥲) - as they're so helpful to my business.
Any ideas?
(I'm quite code / digitally challenged - I warn you up front) -
Hi PanPuszek,
I have just tested the current Vivaldi release 7.2.3621.63 and latest AdGuard 5.0.210.
Result: nothing has changed. AdGuard is still not loading when opening links in new tabs.May I ask you if you can confirm it? Nevertheless I reported the bug.
Kind regards,
Woife -
@Woife
Hi again, I lost the track of this, sorry.
Please add the bug number from the confirmation mail, I will try again to reproduce it and if I can confirm the report.Cheers, mib

@Woife
I still cant reproduce it, clean profile, only the AdGuard extension.
I bet other extensions cause this, can you provide yours?
Open vivaldi://system, expand extensions and copy/paste here.
Select the text and use </> to mark it as code.
Maybe @PanPuszek can do the same and you can compare your extensions.
The best is to create a new second profile and test it there. -
deleted, wrong forum.

I tested it again.
Disabling all extensions except AdGuard: no change - AdGuard is not loading in new tabs.
Creating a new clean profile with AdGuard as the only extension (and default settings): no change - AdGuard is not loading in new tabs. -
@Woife
Hm, no idea then but I cant confirm the report.
Other testers and developers test reports anyway, may one can reproduce it. -
@Woife @PanPuszek
Can you add your hardware specs, @DoctorG mentioned in the report about a race condition.
I have an old laptop but a fast SSD on all devices, specs in my signature. -

@Woife
This should be powerful enough! -
Hey @Woife and @mib2berlin!
I have mentioned my specs in this post https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/813854 - 32GB of RAM, i5 13600K, RTX4080. I do not believe that the specs play the role here.
I don't know how the testing goes, but I'm able to consistently reproduce this issue across a range of computers with different specs, different networks, and even in a clean windows installation in sandbox. Every time I've tried it on any other device, I had no other extensions installed but Adguard.
I can confirm that MV2 version of Adguard works, MV3 does not (needs refresh in a new, backgroud tab). I've noticed that Edge and Zen (Firefox) versions of Adguard do use MV2.
Upon my testing, using
start vivaldi --disable-vivaldi
makes the problem go away - Adguard MV3 no longer requires refresh in a newly opened background tabs to work. Have you tested this @Woife?I'm not sure what to do next. I think I just gave up on this and went on with my life refreshing all the new tabs opened in background by a force of habit at this point
-
Hi.
I tested Vivaldi with
start vivaldi --disable-vivaldi
and it is indeed working as it should. But that is not an option for me. I want the full "Vivaldi experience" with my custom theme and layout.I have now tested so many Chromium-based browsers with so many versions of AdGuard that I dare to say: Vivaldi is to blame. I have used AdGuard MV3 beta and final sucessfully in Vivaldi for many months. It stopped working maybe 5-6 weeks ago. Initially I blamed AdGuard for two weeks until I did some testing and finally found your thread here.
Adblocking is extremely important to me - uBlock Origin Lite has only maybe 30% of the features of uBlock Origin, whereas AdGuard has maybe 90% of the features of uBlock Origin. I need custom rule sets and filters - so uBlock Origin Lite is not doing it for me. I switched back to uBlock Origin until Google will finally murder the extension in the next months.
I salute you that you are able to open links in new tabs and hit refresh every single time - I can't do it. I open hundreds of tabs in the background every day...
Like you, I have no idea what to do next. Original uBlock will soon be dead. AdGuard is the only reasonable alternative for me. And I really, really don't want to switch to other browsers, especially because I'm using Vivaldi on all my Android devices with sync enabled.
I really wish this could be fixed somehow...
Kind regards,
Woife -
@Woife @PanPuszek @Heidifliess
I tested again on my Ryzen 7 system with a very fast NVMe M.2 SSD.I have no further idea what to test, was checking on an older laptop but cant reproduce it.
Vivaldi 7.2.3621.63, clean profile only AdGuard V3. -
Thank you very much for your hard work finding the root cause.
The only real difference I see between you and PanPuszek and me is you are using Intel / Radeon onboard graphics while PanPuszek and me are using NVIDIA RTX 4000 series. I have no idea how important graphic cards are for rendering web pages.
Software seems pretty much the same.Like you and PanPuszek I have no idea what to do / test next.

@Woife
Was disabling hardware acceleration in Settings > Webpages mentioned for a test? -
I just installed the latest NVIDIA driver 572.83 that was released yesterday. Opening links in background tabs:
- Ads are blocked but the space that the ads occupied is still used but simply blank.
- YouTube ads are still shown, AdGuard is not working properly
I disabled hardware acceleration - same result. Enabled it again - same result.
The new NVIDIA driver is the only thing that changed during this tests, so something has happened. -
@Woife For me it looks like so-called "cosmetic filter" fails in Adguard to hide the removed content.
In such case for me a reload with F5 hide the areas.
