Gmail and some emails not showing up in Vivaldi Mail

@Pesala said in Gmail and some emails not showing up in Vivaldi Mail:
I sent a message to my Gmail account from my Vivaldi.net account.
Opera 12.18 fetched it OK, and the messages shows up in my Webmail account, but so far, Vivaldi does not show it as received; only as sent.
I just tried the same. It was in the Gmail Inbox, but the message counter didn't display in the side panel, as it is deduplicated (in both Vivaldi Sent and Gmail Inbox). The message counter showed the 1 for both accounts in the Mail panel itself, however.

@edwardp I deleted the Gmail account from Vivaldi and waited a few days then added it back. It was able to get a few messages but never was able to sync about 450 messages. Now every time I launch the browser the mail client attempts to connect but gives a socket error and never connects to the IMAP server. My Google account shows that it has been approved and has the OATH2 Ok to proceed. None of my other mail clients are having an issue. I even shut off my anti-virus (AVG) in consideration that might be the problem but that did not produce any relief.
Worth noting (maybe) that I programmed in my Vivaldi.net mail box and that is able to connect with no issues.
I prefer to not do a reset unless totally needed since I have a lot of bookmarks and stored passwords and prefer not to have to reprogram all of that if possible.
I am concerned that Gmail may have changed something or is in process and Vivaldi may no longer be allowed. They have done this to other apps such as TypeApp for windows at one point forcing TypeApp to make a lot of changes.
EDIT - Also along with not connecting it is not pulling down this mornings new mail (obviously I guess.)

@dmkroslindale There is a setting on the Gmail side under Forwarding and POP/IMAP, Folder Size Limits. The default option is unlimited, the other options limits it to 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 or 10,000 messages.
Assuming this selection is on unlimited, it should be syncing all of the messages.
The socket errors are a result of a disconnect between the end user and the remote mail server. I've always believed it is the remote mail server doing this, in this case, Gmail, but it's entirely possible that a disconnect can occur anywhere in the path between you and Gmail. Last week, I was unable to access my e-mail via my home ISP (Comcast, in the U.S.) because of socket timeout errors and this lasted for more than two days before it stopped.
I have two Gmail accounts added to Vivaldi Mail, neither account has a lot of regular messages, but one gets a lot of spam, despite having never having been on any mailing lists. For that account, I unsubscribed from the Spam folder, so I don't have to download it. I've had no sync issues so far, with either account.
What I can suggest right now, is to submit a bug report, provide as much information as possible, indicate what you've done up to now, what is occurring, what is not occurring and post the bug report number (VB-xxxxxx) here. Thank you for helping to make Vivaldi better.
-
@edwardp It could be, it was set to 1000, now i put it the maximum.
The problem may also depend on the bug fixed in the last snapshot: [Mail] Some users are not getting new mail (VB-112020)

@Folgore101 I have updated Vivaldi to the latest and noted that in the changelog. I will try again in a couple of days.
The last attempt at adding in my Gmail would see me get most of the messages including new ones, but after I closed the browser and came back later, nothing would sync and no new messages would come in, and a list of never-ending socket errors.
Too busy right now but will play with it when time permits.
-
@dmkroslindale Since i deleted the account and re-entered it i haven't had any more problems, but the new update was also released immediately afterwards and so i can't say for sure who fixed the problem. The important thing is that it doesn't happen again.
-
~~@Folgore101 Well I tried again with no luck. Google says I have OATH authorization for Vivaldi Mail and calendar but it consistently has socket errors.
I also set the email settings to only pull down 1 months of past messages but it pulled does all the way back to August which is what my actual Gmail account has and that is about 1000 messages or so.
I'm attaching a sample of the error log here with my e-mail address edited but as you can see it seems to not be connecting properly with the Gmail IMAP server, yet I have tested it and I have the backlog of messages and it can send mail. However every time I launch the browser now it goes into the loop and just keeps generating errors.
I also have Vivaldi's free e-mail set up at Vivaldi.Net and that is working fine. So this problem is ongoing for weeks now. Everything else internet is working fine.

EDIT: Also discovered that after the initial download of mail on the Gmail IMAP server, it will not receive any new mail after that.

@dmkroslindale Really strange, i'm not particularly technical but isn't that "chrome-extension" that you have some extension that is causing problems?

@dmkroslindale said in Gmail and some emails not showing up in Vivaldi Mail:

One might consider that. I did a net search and found that this is a known issue for some and sometimes points to the Vivaldi Calendar being broken. I found that here in this forum dating back some time, like 2023 and 2022. This is a Chrome extension that is built in and not an add-on or so I read. I do not use Calendar and it was not set up.
I did check another computer I have with an older copy of Vivaldi installed and found one extension on my current system called "Authenticator" that is not on the older system and I have no memory of installing this. I speculate this may be possibly interfering with Google's OATH2. "Authenticator" may have bene installed by me due to the increase in seeking to move to a "passcode" system, but I have never used it. I will shut it off and do further testing after my work-day is done.

@dmkroslindale SOLVED --
Interesting series of events. After reviewing several fo the posts in the forum about this specific issue, and learning that there was a relationship to the calendar function I experimented some more.
I do not use the Calendar function in Vivaldi. Never initiated it and never set it up. When Google goes through its process to grant OATH2 security clearance, it offers to allow Vivaldi to use additional features beyond mail. It also allows one to grant access to calendars and other items.
So I tried one more time to set up the OATH2 feature but this time I did not grant access to Calendar functions since I do not use that. Lo' and behold, everything is working now.
It appears that Vivaldi was connecting to Google but when it attempted to sync calendar data, there was no calendar in use in Vivaldi to connect with. The odd part is that while mail would sync, it would only do so once, and not receive any additional mail since it was trying to deal with the calendar sync, or in this case no calendar to sync with.
Disallowing the calendar authorization when setting up the OATH2 pass through, and only allowing mail, was the fix. Maybe some people that use the calendar function would not see this problem, but since I did not use Calendar, the system hung up.
Since the allowance to sync with a calendar is on the Google end, it would be easy for people, like myself to just say "give me access to everything whether I use it or not," and self-generate this problem.
So the fix for this, until something in the browser creates a work around is:
- Delete the Gmail account from the Vivaldi browser.
- Log in to Google and go to Security Settings and delete the allowance of Vivaldi as a 3rd party application with access.
- Close and Restart the browser
- Re-enter the Gmail address and proceed to Google's OATH2 security process.
- When asked what features to sync with Vivaldi, only select mail. Do not check off calendar.
- finish the OATH2 process and leave Google. You can log out.
- The Vivaldi mail client should have completed or is in process of sync'ing mail only, and all is now well with the world.
Sort of obsessive-compulsive on my part I guess but I liked the mail feature and could not understand what broke.
Thanks for the interaction, it was encouragement.

"chrome extension" mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli
That is the Vivaldi browser itself
-
I've been trying to use the email client with google accounts for a while now. And I kept encountering the issue with missed emails.
Removing and then adding with or without calendar permissions as @dmkroslindale method. In fact I tried with two accounts, one with and one without. Neither has all the emails.
-
@Lunarie I alternate between the Vivaldi mail client and Betterbird (clone of Thunderbird) and no serious issues. However this most recent time I gave up on a full sync of all mail (about 1000 messages) and only sync'd 30 days back. So far OK.
Worth noting that I have also been experiencing issues with Gmail itself. On some days I get all of the headers but the message body takes a long time to fill in. This only happens with external 3rd party mail clients. Going in by browser to Gmail is OK. After testing on 2 different computers and 3 different mail clients I have determined that since the manifestations are the same it is on the Google end and somewhere around their IMAP system.

While google and IMAP have always been annoying, recently it has become awful. Clearly it has become seven layers of afterthoughts and only is kept because nobody at google cares enough to remove.
Incidentally, my Outlook accounts work perfectly.
