Unread blue text emails vs unread black text emails

@paaljoachim If you want every email you have read to automatically be removed from Unread without your having to mark it so, there is a settin for that in the email settings. It's something like "automatically mark emails as read." All of the color discussions are as noted above, there is no way to mark an email as "unseen." But if you automatically mark every email you have opened as "read," there will be a marked difference between your "received" folder and your "unread" folder.

I have been using hotmail for a very long time but because they stopped syncing my various email accounts I had to find another solution. I enjoy using Vivaldi but I am not able to keep the same good overview of my emails as I did in hotmail.

In hotmail the emails show up as blue when I have not clicked these. When I click them they turn black. I can easily make emails read or unread. On or off so to speak.

In Vivaldi unread/unclicked emails are blue. I click to read them and these turn black so this part is similar to hotmail.
BUT.... In Vivaldi there is the Unread and Received folders which for me is the same thing.
I click an email in Unread it turns black but it still keeps the blue button beside it. I do thank you for your responses but I still find Vivaldi confusing as there is the unread - something in between - read. So on - something I do not know what is - off. Hotmail has the on or off nothing in between creating this kind of confusion.

@paaljoachim I'm not sure how fast you can read, but clicking an email certainly isn't enough time for me to read an email. The default in Vivaldi is for users to actively mark an email as read when they consider the email read and done. Blue=unseen, bold black= unread, regular font=read.

You can use the setting "mark as read automatically, but that only works in views that show read emails. So It won't work in Unreal. But then just read your emails in Received, because then the behavior will be similar to what you are used to from Hotmail

blue are those emails that are brand new, that you have never even taken a glance at. Vivaldi calls those Unseen. They are a subset of Unread, which are emails that you haven't yet marked as read.

@paaljoachim It's a carry-ovet from M2 (the mail client in old Opera). Mails in Unread don't get marked as Read unless you manually do so, so that they don't get removed from Unread and thus disappear while you're reading them. When looking at another access point like Received, you'll see bold blue titles for not seen, bold black titles for seen but not marked Read, and non-bold titles for marked as Read. And yes, you can mark a read mail as Unread hut not unseen.

We recently had a discussion on the german forum that led to reopening of VB-106926, which essentially suggests that 'mark as read automatically' should also work in Unread. To avoid emails vanishing from that access point as you look at them, the suggestion is to have the UI do the mark as read action when another email is clicked.

I will in general read emails in the Unread "folder".
So these arrive as blue and I just want to take a quick look at it. Now suddenly it is black like any other email in this list. I add an Important tag so that I remember to get back to it to continue reading it more in depth. I am using the important tag kind of like I click it to make it unread and blue again.

Without the Important tag it will just disappear along with the various other emails here that I have just clicked and barely read. Some emails are just more important for me to remember to look at again than other emails. So that means In need to in this Unread "folder" select to have some of the emails stand out.
In hotmail I just click is as unread so it goes back to be blue again. In Vivaldi I had to do something to make it stand out and I figured that I might as well use the Important tag for it to stand out.

Again I just feel a bit more lost in Vivaldi in relation to unread and read emails than I do in Outlook/Hotmail.

@paaljoachim aha, and that's the issue then. I suggest:

if you work in the unread view, actively mark emails as read when you are done with them
if you want to have the behavior you are used to from Hotmail, work in Received, and change the mail setting to mark emails as read automatically.

My 2 cents - I like it the way it is. Vivaldi helps me differentiate between unseen and unread which is useful for me.
