Alternatives to uBO
-
@barbudo2005 That you can't use uBlock Origin in any way in Vivaldi.
-
What aspects of uBO will you miss the most?
-
@barbudo2005 It's about its working itself. My uBlock still works, but I'm afraid that when it is disabled, the built-in blocker will not be as effective, even when using the same filter lists. Now I use both and uBlock constantly shows that it is blocking something. Unless it has priority over the built-in blocking.
When it comes to individual functions, I will miss disabling cosmetic filtering (which sometimes helped with issues on sites) and item deletion mode (which is adding filters to my list). -
I am testing Adguard and it is a quite good alternative. Give it a try.

@barbudo2005
I know it, it's very good, I used it together with uBlock for a long time. However, I disabled it because this extension weighs as much as 150MB and is the largest of my extensions, and I have a lot of them. uBlock is "only" 13MB. Good, but I prefer not to load the browser too much. I also use Privacy Badger. -
But we are talking about when uBO does not exist, not to replace it today. (By the way, how many GB of RAM do you have?)
On 30 June 2025 the alternatives will be only 3:
1- The built-in adblocker
2- uBOL if you want the concept of ‘install and forget’.
3.- Adguard if you want to keep uBO's potentialities.
We will see if the built-in adblocker is the winner in this race.
-
Adguard is russia-origin company in the past.
Built-in adblocker seems week, and don’t support custom lists.

Question:
Can I use uBlock Origin and Privacy Badger Firefox add-ons at a time?
Answer from uBO team:
Just use uBO.
Privacy Badger is now only using static filters by default, which provides no real benefit over uBO. It used to "learn" about trackers, but this was turned off as a default because of security and fingerprinting concerns. All of this is covered in detail here:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/10/privacy-badger-changing-protect-you-better
Also, do not use other content blockers with uBO. Per gorhill (the developer of uBO):

@barbudo2005 Ok, I disabled Privacy Badger (that blocks trackers), but now I tested only uBO+built-in and only uBO on few sites with lot of ads/trackers and I don't se more things blocked by uBO (which also allegedly blocks trackers).
So should I understand that neither uBO nor the built-in one now blocks these trackers? -

How do you see "more things blocked by uBO"?

Why do you say "now"?
Both block trackers based on the lists they use:

By looking at the number on extension icon

now, meaning after disabling the Privacy Badger.

Ok, I had AdGuard Tracking Protection and AdGuard URL Tracking Protection turned off. So, I enabled them (+ filter update) and still uBO don't show more blocked things on sites where Privacy Badger did, even after disabling adblocker built-in.
So, I conclude that Privacy Badger was blocking things that uBO or the built-in adblocker can't block. -
After 5 years, I'm now also considering migration. Some important extensions will not be supported, and I have constant issues like this one.

If the built-in ad blocker ever got an element picker/blocker like UBO and Brave's built in, it would be a pretty decent blocker. Without it, it doesn't do it for me. AdGuard is fine, but the newer version will be limited as time goes on. Which is why the focus on the built-in getting closer to feature parity with UBO, like Brave's is, is important.

@kvistgaard I was gone and came back - now when Vivaldi will / would switch off manifestv2 functionality and joins the bandwaggon - I will prepare for change, too.
Have to check where to go to...

@hobilke
Hi, go to use Adguard Manifest V3, good blocker with element picker. I use uBlock Origin Lite since month.
The Vivaldi team have 6 month to extend to capabilities of the internal blocker, no need to change.Cheers, mib

@hobilke, Vivaldi support Mv2 until the blackout next year, but Mv2 or Mv3 afect mainly extensions from the Chrome Store, not so the inbuild features. The inbuild blocker in Vivaldi already does a good job (depending on the filters you use) and for sure it will be improved in next releases.
In extensions not related to security and privacy, like DarkReader, Translators..... if you use, no differencse for the user if they are Mv3.I think that there a no problems for Vivaldi with this new Google crap, no need to change to another Browser, at least not for me. If needed ther are userscripts which you can use if you need extra features.

@Catweazle Wanted to ask for your lists, too.
I'll set my Linux-setup to your lists and keep settings from uBlock on the MAC doing test runs. Will see how it works.
I assume that the list are updated on the fly or would I have to update them manually from the preferences?
Another q.: is it possible to disable uBlock origin w/o removing it completedly?
Cheers

@hobilke, the lists point out to it's sources and are updated with these when you launch Vivaldi and it charge them. Not all are updated daily.
For your calm you can deselect and select these again to have it on the current date, but with this change the date but not the list.
