Import and export bookmarks
-
Where is the word "sync" in that sentence.
-
@ChrisOfBristol Where would you "upload" your data, if not to sync? Vivaldi never requires anyone to upload any data to anywhere - except if they want to sync.
-
I never wrote that I wanted to "upload" anything either.
Are you Russian? You are purposely misunderstanding what I write. This is turning into some sort of Soviet dystopia.
-
@ChrisOfBristol You asked a question that makes no sense outside of the context of sync, unless you know of some other reason "uploading one's data" might be a solution for importing or exporting bookmarks.
-
@ChrisOfBristol You stated: " It ain't going to happen. They want your data. They suggest using sync - that is very complicated and means uploading all your data. I don't want ALL the same bookmarks on both devices anyway. They also want to make it hard for you to switch to another browser."
These are untrue statements. Bookmarks import/export will be coming to Vivaldi mobile.
Vivaldi doesn't want anyone's data. Yes, sync has been suggested. It is not very complicated. It doesn't mean uploading all your data. Vivaldi does not want to make it hard for anyone to switch to another browser. You are attributing motives that do not exist. I chimed in to correct your misstatements. I misunderstood nothing. You just kept trying to change the subject.I get that you don't want all the same bookmarks on all devices. Fine. We don't have a solution for your use case at this time. You will have to approach it whatever way you feel is best.
Since you asked, it happens I'm not Russian. I'm a U.S. dude with a background in education, including an emphasis on understanding of language. But for the last 40+ years I've made my living in the field of research and facts. And now I also endeavor to help Vivaldi users clarify things. For free, as a volunteer.

Please add bookmark import and export to Vivaldi for Android and Vivaldi for iOS for ease of data portability, especially for mobile-only users.

I read the blog post that says that it isn't possible to export/import bookmarks. But if you check Cromite browser you can do it. As Cromite is open source, maybe Vivaldi can extract this feature.
-
Please just implement a save out to a
DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file
saving out bookmarks as html has been part of browsers since netscape the format is still used today, (certainly by firefox and chrome)
There's no reason the mobile browser can't just save out a html file.
This would be an incredible win for data portability. -
@mib2berlin said in Import and export bookmarks:
You cant export bookmarks from Vivaldi for Android, except the phone is rooted maybe.
Yep.
Yes, by rooting or using document provider on non-rooted devices we can easily backup and restore Bookmarks files. No problem.
However, to convert a file from Vivaldi format to the common html format we will have to use either a script or do it manually. That is, this function (import/export) is quite realizable on all devices and already now, if the user makes a little effort. Will do 5% of the work.
-
It's August 2024, still no import of bookmarks on Android.
I would help me a lot to have this. Vivaldi is my favorite browser. I am so disappointed!
-
@jhubele Why do you need to import? Why not merely sync?
-
@Ayespy
Thank you for your quick response.
I do want to import only a subset of my bookmarks to my tablet. It's a manually curated list.
I do not need and I do not want to sync back to origin ever.I must admit I am also cautious with sync functions in general. Without a recovery option for deleted or overridden data I would not use it.
Thanks.
-
@jhubele Since we can't import/export bookmarks to Android yet, sync is the available option.
I have enough confidence in Vivaldi sync that if I were in your shoes, I would sync my Android device with my primary, then turn off sync for Android and pare the list down to what I wanted on the Android device. It's a lot of work, but it's what I would do.
-
This feature would be very useful to have as it would offer a workaround to sync. Currently sync has not been working for 6 days :
Thanks
-
@Ayespy This sounds so rude to me, it's not of your business why the user needs to export/import. We have the right to access our data, and you (as a brand) should provide the options for it. Currently I CAN'T ACCESS MY DATA after an OS reinstallation, and having my data on vivaldi mobile doesn't help at all.
All I know is I can't do manual export on mobile because you ARE FORCING THE USERS to use the sync and refuse to implement a manual export/import option. There you have your "confidence" in Sync.

@Raizendavid002 Let's cool it down friend, will you
He is just trying to help -
We need export, sync is not working anymore.
