SERIOIS Bug. Vivaldi 6.8 will crash and never able to open when changing background of homepage
-
I too can't open a new tab since I changed the background colour of my homepage.
BUT...
I can open a new private tab, if that helps anyone. Plus I can open a link in a new tab. So have a spare tab open from an existing open tab till we get a fix.
Or, Just change your homepage to your favourite search engine in the settings, that works too.In fairness, I have been using Vivaldi for years on both Android and Linux PC with few serious issues but with a lot of good features.
-
Also happens with me in Android 12. For those unable to open Vivaldi because of this bug, open a link in any other app then go to "Open in Vivaldi browser" so you land directly on that page. Then change homepage settings to Google as suggested earlier.
-
yea same. now i have to open link via vivaldi to use this brower.
-
Same issue here. Still no update on Play?

@jasonwch said in SERIOIS Bug. Vivaldi 6.8 will crash and never able to open when changing background of homepage:
@HateNewOpera I can download with this link
https://downloads.vivaldi.com/stable/Vivaldi.6.8.3388.94_arm64-v8a.apk
Thank you. I updated my Vivaldi with this apk. The bug is gone.
-
Hi, I can confirm 6.8.3388.94 from the download page fix this, you can reach it from https://vivaldi.com/blog/ too.
No idea why this is not in the Playstore, I will ask in the developer chat.Cheers, mib
-
The problem still remains.
I am now using cromite for now until this problem is not solved
-
@AlexTheGib
Did you update to 6.8.3388.94?
The new version is still in the Play Store approval process.
Nobody knows why it take sometimes a few hours and sometimes days. -
@mib2berlin Yes, I've updated to the latest version and the same thing happens. I've also tried the snapshot version and the same thing happens.
The browser is unusable.
-
@AlexTheGib
Hm, I test all before I write here, Vivaldi crash at start until I update. Crash is gone and I can change the speed dial background to image, color, whatever.
We need more users to test this. -
@mib2berlin ! It crashes i my device Poco x3 NFC Android 12 MIUI 14
-
The browser keeps crashing when pressing open new tab, no dark mode button in the drop down menu and the bookmark folders don't even show the number of bookmarks inside them, genuinely wtf was this update. Go back to the previous version Vivaldi.
-
@AlexTheGib
Yes I understand but we need another user on 6.8.3388.94 confirm this, all user update to this version report here it work now.
Then I can add a comment to the bug report it is not fixed for all user.
Can you create a dual app of Vivaldi?
This a clone of the default install but with a clean profile, I am on MIUI 14 too and you can find it in the settings, search for "dual". -
@mib2berlin Ok, I created a clone of the app and the same thing happens, it crashes when I try to change the background, then it opens but then it crashes. In other words, the problem still exists
-
@AlexTheGib
This is absolute strange, we are on the same Android version same system and same Vivaldi version and I cant get it to crash.
What background do you choose, image or something from the selection?
Anyway, I added a comment to the report some user still get a crash. -
@mib2berlin I chose them all and they all had the same result and the background remained black. The browser already came with a black background. And even if I clicked to change the background, it crashed.
-
I like Vivaldi as a browser, but for now I'll have to use brave on my phone.
No problems with Vivaldi desktop so far.
-
I also have this issue. On two phones. When I set background image (select one from possible options) when I try to open new card in normal mode app crash. When I try to open Background wallpaper settings app also crashed. But when I create shortcut to incognito mode and open Vivdi in incognito mode everything work good.
Checked on two phones, every these same situation. So I use Vivaldi in incognito mode and wait for update
-
We've released a Minor Update, which has solved some of the issues. You should no longer find yourself in an endless loop after a crash, for example.
We've discovered other bugs, though. They're fixed already and we've uploaded another build for review in the Play Store, but for now I'd customize the Start Page via Settings instead of the quick access button on Start Page itself.
Thank you for being so kind and patient with us.
