Fix Vivaldi That Does Not Open
-
@Pathduck still a bit confusing to me, because I only install apps for current user in my work machine where I can only install software in that way (or as standalone/portable, of course). Otherwise most things goes in program files. (so user folder is now the vivaldi default?)
Gotta have to add a note for this, I guess:
C:\Users\%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default
And this
C:\%programfiles%\Vivaldi\User Data\Default
-
@RLindaS Great
Remember to go into Settings > General and enable the automatic updates. Way too easy to forget checking for updates.
Or get into the habit of doing Help Menu > Check for updates weekly or so.
@Hadden89 Yes, Current User installs are simple, because they don't require admin rights to install in AppData. Looks like you have a Standalone install though (
C:\Vivaldi
).An All Users install will usually be in Program Files, but I have it in
D:\bin\Vivaldi
'cause that's how I roll - but I still prefer the profile to be in my user's data folderPet Peeve: Some versions ago they removed the ability to choose where an All Users install should go. That sucks for me of course, fortunately I've not had to do a complete reinstall for several years (backups!)
Apparently the reason for the change was "security".
Security be damned, I want options not hand-holding -

C:\Users%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default
C:%programfiles%\Vivaldi\User Data\DefaultAh, see now you're grinding an old Windows cmd user's gears
ฮป echo C:\Users\%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default C:\Users\C:\Users\Stian\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default ฮป echo C:%programfiles%\Vivaldi\User Data\Default C:C:\Program Files\Vivaldi\User Data\Default
So that's going to end badly
The better way would be:
ฮป echo "%localappdata%\Vivaldi\User Data\Default" "C:\Users\Stian\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default" ฮป echo "%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default" "C:\Users\Stian\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default" ฮป echo "%programfiles%\Vivaldi" "C:\Program Files\Vivaldi"
Remember to use quotes if you're actually going to do any scripting with these vars - bloody Windows paths

I have 6.6 on Windows 11, I updated because 6.4 stopped launching. I uninstalled 6.4, installed 6.6. When it still did not work I uninstalled and reinstalled twice. Then found this thread, followed the advised fix and 6.6 still will not launch.

@RLindaS Yes you will lose tabs. Small loss for a working browser again. Learn to save sessions if these things are important to you:
https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/tabs/session-management/Session management doesn't really help if the Sessions folder is so broken that Vivaldi won't start. That's my situation, so I've had to move away the whole 'Sessions' folder.
Is there any way to import an old session that isn't in the current (new) Sessions folder? Otherwise I've lost a 650+ tab session
-
@remerson There is a great addon Tabs Session Manager.
-
@Gerodot1964 Nice one, thanks, Iโll try that!
-
@Gerodot1964 As far as I can tell, Tabs Session Manager can't import from Vivaldi session files. It would be useful for saving sessions/tabs, if Vivaldi would open with my previous session files -- but it won't.
It looks like I will have to just start again from a completely empty sessions. Which really sucks. At least Vivaldi seems to have preserved my history, so I can find a lot of stuff in there.
As a "power user" type browser, Vivaldi really should:
- Have "session auto-save" switched on by default.
- Never corrupt saved session files.
- Be able to import sessions from its own saved session files!

This post is deleted! -
So I take it if you point out the obvious, as perhaps rimisen 48 did, your post gets deleted and you get banned? Which is what I would do if I was pedalling a substandard non-operational product?
I am running Windows 10 64 Bit, which is up to date, and if it would open, Vivaldi that would be up to date, downloaded a new version today as it won't open, after downloading, still won't open.
Have changed the .exe file to vivaldi1 doesn't work. Have turned off Bit Defender and Malware Bytes (if I get hacked, I will sue Vivaldi) Vivaldi doesn't work.
I won't be following any instructions from blind cult followers making me delete my session data, because, sorry, Developers should sort out their rubbish software, not me lose my work.
So, appreciate any real advice that works, that doesn't involve mentioned above. Once I get my work back, considering the number of times I have dealt with this steaming cow manure bull s t, it's probably time to stick to Brave, Opera, CCleaner, Firefox, Edge, Chrome, which, funnily enough, all work... So vivaldi, how do you like them apples, huh?

@rimisen48
was banned for posting a spam link.No one is ever banned for complaining about Vivaldi. It is only when people stray into repeated violation of the Code of Conduct that people get banned for non-spam related reasons.
On any given thread, if you see a deleted post from a banned user, the reason was most likely spam.

Do you need help or want to rant?
I can understand anger about such data loss.Developers should sort out their rubbish software, not me lose my work.
May be Bit Defender or Malwarebytes is the rubbish stopping Vivaldi with injected libraries or forced Vivaldi process termination.

In the 'Sessions' folder, I deleted all files except Apps_* and Session_* files, then Open Vivaldi, all Workspaces preserved.

@Hadden89
Thanks! This worked for me
