Crash Tab | Bird Image
-
@Capushon
Hi! how do made like that ?
https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/744658 -
For some reason the bird is back tonight -
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/energy
only have to scroll the page and it appears!!
Still on 6.6.3271.55 nothing else changed.
Just about to upgrade to 57 to see if that fixes it. -
@ChrisAO123 Can not reproduce with 6.6.3271.57 Win 11 on this page, no "dead bird" page.
Please check Troubleshooting issues.
-
@DoctorG Been through all that thanks, see earlier in the thread, and it was reproduced elsewhere.
The upgrade to 6.6.3271.57 made no difference.
It's all a bit weird as I normally have two "start page" tabs open, along with other tabs not active (effectively hibernated).
This happened in the 2nd of those tabs, closed it, closed browser, reopened, used the remaining "start page" tab and didn't have a problem that time.
Since then it was a bit random until this evening and now it's very regular. I'll have to experiment a bit more to see if there's any pattern. I've got both Task Manager and System Information running and not showing anything obvious. -

Not by users after upgrade to 6.6.3271.57
I see you done the testing before, but if you could just do a test/check using Guest Profile
and report what was the load (tabs etc.) when the "bird" appears, that would be useful information (thinking of OOM problem). -
@ChrisAO123 If you see the tab crash (dead bird) again, check for crasdumps from time of crash.
It would be great if you could send the dev team crash dumps so that they can understand what is triggering the crashes.
Here's more info about how to send crash dump files:
-
@DoctorG Been there, done that, as per earlier in the thread. When I've played about a bit more I'll send some more if it looks as though they could be useful.
@TbGbe Did that before thanks, when most recently checked it also did it on the Guest Profile. This isn't a straight forward OOM issue. @mib2berlin managed to reproduce it on an earlier version and he has loads of memory. @yngve was thinking it was related to a Java script issue, and there was a suggestion that a Chrome update may have fixed the previous incident. But I think there's been another Chrome update since, and was now getting it on my other machine (similar spec but different hardware) with 6.6.3271.55 and I'd (previous to the most recent issues) not had a problem on that machine. Having updated to 6.6.3271.57 on that machine, I haven't managed to repeat it (yet)but we will see! Not sure, but I thought when checking quickly Chrome hasn't changed between 6.6.3271.55 & 57, but I didn't look thoroughly and certainly no expert on this.

@ChrisAO123 dead Raven - Vivaldi Kaput
-
@Donhoe No, means a tab crashed, not "Vivaldi ist kaputt".
-
@DoctorG after recent update and losing all my tabs again - i think it is time to move on so it is Kaput to me - i did not have these issues in Chrome
-
@Donhoe Have much fun with the browser you selected to use now.
-
In my previous post, I mentioned about a Chrome update, when of course I meant Chromium.
That aside, there's been no change in the situation, I'm now getting the bird quite regularly, almost without fail when I go to https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/energy
I only need to attempt to scroll the page and I get the bird.
I was getting the same result with the Guest profile last night, annoyingly the Guest profile doesn't seem to produce Crash Dumps.I did it four times tonight to create some crash dumps which I'll send off.
Now here is a strange thing, I left the tab with the bird and went and opened MS Edge and went to the same page - no bird - exactly as I'd found before. I also then opened Firefox and did the same, no bird - no difference from what I'd expected.
I went back the the Vivaldi tab, refreshed it - no bird and was able to navigate the site!Clearly with two extra browsers open, more memory is being used, and yet the problem didn't reappear, so this can't be a straight forward memory issue. Nor were there an issues appearing in either Task Manager or Process Explorer's System Information (both running)
If as previously suggested this could be a Javascript related problem, then I suggest it's got to be the way that Vivaldi is handling this as I've never managed to get a crash in 3 other browsers (Edge, Firefox and Palemoon) now or previously when I was getting one in Vivaldi.
-
@ChrisAO123 One thing to keep in mind is: Vivaldi is currently based on Chromium 122, Edge is based on Chromium 123, and Firefox on something completely different.
IOW, they are apples, oranges, and pears. What crashes one, might not crash the others, in all combinations.
As mentioned earlier, we have not be able to reproduce, except what we call the "Google crasher" (caused by a special URL format, which was fixed in a recent minor update). This might suggest that something is different about your configuration, compared to our own installations and test environments.
I would suggest using a standalone installation for testing, and if a clean configuration works fine, perhaps make it incrementally closer to your main configuration.
It might perhaps also be useful to run from the terminal command line, perhaps with the commandline arguments
--enable-logging=stderr --v=1
Which will be logging a lot of stuff to the terminal windows.

@ChrisAO123 Thanks for the crashdumps.
Both logs I have seen are Out Of Memory events, this time associated with image encoding/decoding, but this time it is clear what triggered it (for the current issues, at least): Generating the thumbnail for the tab.
That action (and the display) can be disabled by unchecking the Prefs->Tabs->Tab options->Show Popup Thumbnails.
I don't know, but I'd suspect that you might encounter similar problems with the Capture Page action.
It is unfortunately not practical to automatically disable the action if there is too little memory available for the action, the detection happens very deep in the code, and the decision to crash the rendering/GPU process happens there, and is not transmitted upwards (this is a Chromium design choice).
-
Well it's been a while since experiencing the problem that I initially reported when visiting https://forums(dot)moneysavingexpert(dot).com/ which I haven't had recently whether or not I disable Show Popup thumbnails (which I do have disabled but I didn't spot any noticeable difference).
I have never had a problem with the Capture Page action which I have used on a few occasions on both my machines. However, whilst I no longer have a problem on https://forums(dot)moneysavingexpert(dot).com/ I've now experienced the problem at https://new(dot)three(dodt)co(d0t)uk/account/login#/ as soon as the login is complete having gone through their OTP etc. and the page fully loaded, the bird appears (ps. it's a lousy website IMHO)
This I first noticed on my other machine where I'd never had a problem before, and now also on this machine for which you've previously had crash dumps.Whilst I rarely login there on my PCs, it didn't used to occur but certainly has since 6.7.3329.39 and 6.7.3329.41
Previously when I've been monitoring Memory usage using Process Explorer - System Information as well as Task Manager whilst the "on-board" Video card memory has been very close to maximum, there has been plenty of Shared memory available.@:Yngve did suggest in an earlier post about the possibility of this issue being related to Javascript handling which I'm suspecting maybe the case as I have experienced a couple of other issues related to Javascript which I'll detail in another thread in due course.
So I'm not convinced that this is a straight forward OOM problem.(Active links removed)

In the past, dead bird happend for others when tab Out of Ressources or extension broke tab or installed video codecs were trouble makers (outdated media player codecs on Windows N/KN or third party codecs), and i very rare cases security software killed the tab.
-
@DoctorG Thanks for the hint about 3rd party codecs, I did have the K-Lite Mega codec pack installed and have uninstalled it but it made no difference to current issues. It's not extension either eyc, all addressed earlier in the thread.
The problem has never totally gone away. Although not occurring with the original webpages mentioned at the start of this thread, there have been several occasions when there's been a brief "flash" of the bird on closing a tab (iirc usually with one of the pages that used to be affected).
In my last post in this thread the issue I'm experiencing with "Three" would be difficult for most the check out as it will require an active account, however I've got another web page of theirs giving the bird.
https://www.three.co.uk/shop/broadband/coverage-checker
The page loads, then after a short while whilst something towards the end of the loading which doesn't affect the visual appearance of the page finishes, the bird then appears.
In MS Edge, similar start, and it then results in an error message.
Conclusion, this has something to do with Chromium as I'm not getting the error with Palemoon or Firefox, or it may be related to something to do with the way they handle Javascript as suggested by @yngve As I've already said I'm not convinced this is a straightforward OOM issue as I can have all 4 browsers open and not getting the issue in Palemoon or Firefox. Same machine so same memory, resources etc.
(I have some other issues related to Javascript and Chromium which I will start another thread about shortly.) -
@ChrisAO123 said in Crash Tab | Bird Image:
several occasions when there's been a brief "flash" of the bird on closing a tab
Known issue, and is caused by some internals shutdowns finishing before everything else related to the tab using it has shut down. Technically known as a "race condition". It is not caused by the page at all.
-
@yngve
I see you haven't commented about https://www.three.co.uk/shop/broadband/coverage-checker
This doesn't require an account or any detail to be entered.
Latest version of Vivaldi 6.8.3381.48
It also occurs in the guest Profile and gets an Error message in Edge once it finished loading.
No problems on Firefox or Palemoon. -
@ChrisAO123, load fine for me, but I've tested the page, which, apart of several security flaws, also use a ton of first and third party tracking cookies, which may cause this issue. Try in a guest profile, to rule out an extension or setting as cause.
