Text input loosing focus after switching tabs (Google Docs)
-
Hi.
Whenever we switch tabs or apps we loose the focus on the Vivaldi tab.
Imagine that I'm typing text in a tab in Google Docs, then I go to other tab or other program to copy text and then I get back to the Google Docs tab to paste it. As I press Ctrl+Shift+V to paste, a blank page is opened in the tab. I need to click back to go back to Google Docs and place the cursor where the focus was lost and paste the text.
Edit:
Vivaldi version 6.5.3206.50 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit)
Happens since first time installation.

My report seems a duplicate of: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/75404/text-input-loosing-focus-after-switching-tabs-google-docs/133?page=7
I confirm this does not happen with Firefox or Chrome.
-
Same here. Is there a bug report we can vote on?
-
@jmss Yeah, you're generalizing based on a single site.
This is a known bug for Google Docs specifically.
Maybe some other similar heavy web apps. It's an old bug, no idea when/if it will ever get fixed.
Workaround: Switch tabs twice...
-
The Google Docs apps are not really debuggable. That could be why there is no fix.
-
I genuinely appreciate the efforts going into the development of this browser, and I am not qualified to judge (and you may not be either, @DoctorG), but I reject the premise that Google Docs apps are not debuggable since other browsers (all that I have tried) have been successful at implementing this.
Vivaldi is really nifty browser, and unfortunately, this the only reason Vivaldi can't be a viable option for me (not my choice to use Gdocs).

Interaction and issues of focus with tabs, Vivaldi UI and Google Docs can not be debugged easily, was told by dev team.
but I reject the premise
You can.
But you bark up the wrong tree as I am not responsible for the bug. -
I wasn't implying that you are, @DoctorG. I am not barking either. Just wanted to express my disappointment.

@mindplay said in Text input loosing focus after switching tabs (Google Docs):
I haven't seen this happening anywhere else.
I can confirm this: this issue with focus happens (in my experience) only with Google Docs and Google Sheets, not with any other website or app I have used.
-
Sadly no fix available.
FYI: Follow master 🪲bug VB-43340 "Text editing fields lose focus when switching tabs (Google Docs, Office, Jira)" in Stable and Snapshot's changelogs.
-
What are the chances this will get fixed?
This is probably the best browser out there and I want to continue using it - but this bug makes it essentially unusable for people who do a lot of work in G-suite, having to move my hand to the mouse to click and regain focus whenever switching tabs is a dealbreaker. -
@doubleknavery
Hi, the bug report was updated end January and get higher priority but as always, no timeline.
I don't use Google Docs, but when you're typing, it might be better to press F9 to focus the page than using the mouse.Cheers, mib

Thanks mib. I have subscribed via RSS and will probably come back if there are any developments.
-
@VoodooPriest How do I follow that bug? I couldn't find the list of bugs anywhere?
-
-
Thanks, @mib2berlin. Vivaldi is the best browser I've used to far. I used Firefox (and predecessors) for many, many years until they decided to introduce disruptive updates. Then I switched to Chrome but its password management is cumbersome/buggy. For me, this is the only fault of Vivaldi, except for occasional crashes when opening more than one profile (I use more than one).
It's a shame, because this bug seems quick to fix (I'm not a web-development professional, I use(d) mostly C/C++, Python, Ada/SPARK, etc., and this is a pain: when you come back to the Google Doc and want to paste code unformatted using Ctrl+Shift+V you go to the last web page (without the correct focus I suppose this key combination means back).

Hi, a developer is working on this issue and mentioned Chrome call an internal extension.
I am not familiar with GD, can one test if the focus lost is fixed with installing it?

-
Unfortunately no. The problem remains with the plugin. I did restart Vivaldi after installing it just to be sure.

@mateuszwilczek
Thank you for testing, the developer found out it doesn't help.
Was a false positive, sorry.
Anyway, the developer is actively working on this, I hope we get a fix for this long term issue.
