Extremely slow performance since upgrade
-
@0bit Same thing, I'm on Nvidia Pascal (1070Ti). This has been a problem since version 6.2 of Vivaldi.
-
Ok guys, me too.
-
-
I definitely recommend trying with a new profile. For me it resolved a lot of issues I was facing before.
-
Ok, i did reset my profile and it did resolve the problem. My bad that was the first thing to do.
What the hell -
@kmlbgn
Hi and thank you for testing this.
Nobody know exactly why this can happen, some user downgrade Vivaldi which break the profile, for example.
A crash, power loss and extensions can do the same.Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin and if it happens again after a future update, I'll have to do it again?
I've got so many customisations and bookmarks that I'm really feeling lazy.
-
So I started playing with Vivaldi 6.5 after months of zero issues running Edge fulltime, just to see if anything had improved and noticed a few things.
-
Both Vivaldi and Edge (or any other installed Chromium browser) share Chromium components, so when Vivaldi locks up it takes down edge too. Presumed resolution was to install Vivaldi stand-alone outside of the program files dirs to keep it isolated. Vivaldi performance problems persist regardless but haven't had another lock up affecting Edge yet.
-
Vivaldi has a new problem where after a while I am unable to close tabs. I can open new tabs and navigate between them fine but neither the X button nor CTRL+W work at all. Have to kill the process and restart.
-
Vivaldi for all its security benefits doesn't support Encrypted Client Hello (successor to ESNI), Edge does, Chrome does. Pretty major hole in Vivaldi's security capability.
Looks like more and more people with performance problems are finding the forums, that's great!

@cayenne
Hi, I guess it was not the update but your profile was broken for some time but you didn't notice it.
Vivaldi jump always two Chromium versions and then the error appear.
Use sync to have your bookmarks, passwords, many settings in the cloud. It takes me 5 minutes to reset my profile and get back to a working Vivaldi, some extra work for command chains, themes ans so forth.
Backup your profile, which is always a good idea, and copy files manually is OK but take some time.Cheers, mib

- No, they share the same source code but the installs are totally independent.
- This is a bug and already fixed in the snapshot (Beta) build for Vivaldi 6.6.
- It does support Hello
Open vivaldi://password-manager/passwords to enable or disable it.
Cheers, mib
-
Hi @mib2berlin
1 - Strange both browsers would become unresponsive at the same time.
2 - Great!
3 - Different "Hello", pertains to TLS handshake: see Secure SNI at the bottom: https://www.cloudflare.com/ssl/encrypted-sni/ -
@pfine
Ah, I thought you meant Windows Hello, do you have enabled Secure DNS in Vivaldi?
3. Can you check:
chrome://settings/security?search=dns- I am a volunteer Vivaldi tester and if I reproduce a crash bug report it never beak Edge or Chrom which I often use for testing.
Really strange.
Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin I need to test with a new profile :
or backup
%localappdata%\Vivaldi
and then delete it to generate a new one and connect my Vivaldi account? -
@cayenne
You can test in a new profile before you wipe \App Data\Vivaldi
If you use sync already, login with your account and sync encryption password.
If not enable it.
Don't forget your encryption password, only you know it. -
@cayenne A spare profile should do the trick. But if not, refresh your profile.
-
I've been trying to restore everything to a new profile for almost 1 hour now, despite the synchronisation, because vivaldi doesn't synchronise everything. I have a setting that has jumped and I can't put it back the way it was before.
The favourites bar, I have "Speed Dial" which appears instead of "Bookmarks" except that in the settings, "Bookmarks" is not available.
Old profile :
NEW PROFILE :
I'm already fed up. All the open tabs don't synchronise.
Workspaces don't either.
Neither do RSS feeds...I'm going to eat and I'll continue later.
-
@cayenne
Hm yes, tabs, workspaces and feed are not synced.
Delete the folder Sessions and Sessions Storage in the new profile and copy them over from your backup.
No idea if you can restore the feeds.About the bookmark bar, open the bookmark panel remove Speed Dial from the bookmark bar, add Bookmarks.
Use the context menu for this. -
@mib2berlin Secure DNS is there but no ECH. In Edge this is enabled via this switch: --enable-features=EncryptedClientHello
-
@pfine
Hm, no such flag in my Edge developer, Chrome or Chromium on Linux, I will check later on Windows.
If this is a experimental feature developed by the Edge devs other Chromium browser will not get it.
They have a really astonishing development pace.EDIT: Not on Windows Edge either, don't say you use the Canary build of Edge.
-
@mib2berlin No just the regular official build, may be a Windows only thing. Looks like this started testing back in '22: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/discussions/you-can-now-enable-encrypted-client-hello-encrypted-sni-or-esni/m-p/3600372
My official build passes the Cloudflare test with the switch posted above.
