Solved Bookmarks performance too slow
-
I've had the same issue, and it was solved (along with others) by turning off EFFICIENCY MODE. Note that this only applies to newer Intel processors. See https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/90809/one-word-turn-off-efficiency-mode/1

With the release of Vivaldi 6.4, Bookmarks thumbnails are now stored separately, hopefully improving the overall performance when dealing with Bookmarks.

I'm afraid it still hasn't been fully fixed. I still see this CPU spike when bookmarking, and sometimes you will also see a delay of a couple of seconds before the bookmark icon in the addressbar turns grey. Why not give an option to completely disable thumbnails? I believe this is the only true fix.

@RasheedHolland Have you already tried emptying vivaldi thumbnail folder to see if it helps with lags?
But yeah, not storing bookmark thumbs at all would be nice.. -

-
@RasheedHolland Bookmark thumbs in 6.4 are now in
\User Data\Default\VivaldiThumbnails
. Just empty the folder on closed browser and see if it helps. Mine is 1242 items. -
@Hadden89 And in ...\User Data\Default\SyncedFiles\
-
@DoctorG Ah, didn't know about this. Tnx
-
@Hadden89 Oh, i fear that may cause loss of bookmark thumbs because these are the extracted ones from Bookmarks file.
-
@DoctorG Yeah, I know. But might help people with bookmark issues as long it doesn't touch speed dial thumbs... (also, the browser will still re-create them as new over the time)

Those are the custom SD thumbnails, so I wouldn't recommend deleting those

Might be trouble too - at least the background image from the current theme is also stored there (for some silly reason) so a risk is losing the theme background if folder content is just deleted. Just sort by file size and likely the theme background will be one of the largest. Don't delete that file but all others.
I do it from time to time to "clean up" since I don't care about site thumbs (and have them hidden with custom CSS anyway). But I doubt it would help performance. Save some disk space maybe. Worth a try I guess.
-
@Pathduck Tnx for pointing that out. The thumbs folder, on the other side, should store only bookmarks thumbs & thumbs for vivaldi buttons.
-

thumbs for vivaldi buttons
Yes those too I guess, if using custom buttons. Basically any "custom" images used will be stored there. But would be better storing these in SyncedFiles - maybe at some point we will get Sync of both custom SD thumbs and custom buttons/themes - one can hope
-
@Pathduck I actually stopped to hope and just using the favicons for dials which are already cross profiles/platform & synced without using symbolic links, clouds or other sorceries
Also, I love the "even more tiny thumbs" I get with the icon view ^^

It's not as bad as in the past, but just compare it with Firefox or Edge, it's way more smooth. But perhaps the problem that I describe isn't even related to thumbnails, but more about bugs in Vivaldi's GUI rendering. Vivaldi 6.4 feels quite sluggish in general, it's a step back from Viv 6.1 and 6.2.

@RasheedHolland How many bookmarks do you have?

https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/web_browser_bookmarks_view.htmlI have about 4500 bookmarks. With older versions of Vivaldi, with this amount of bookmarks it started to malfunction, so things have been improved. The CPU still spikes a bit, but RAM usage isn't going down. That was the original problem that I posted about. Since then I have of course performed a complete reinstall of Vivaldi 6.1 (now 6.4).

Sadly i saw, this will not be always updated. May be caused by Vivaldi Sync.
-
@DoctorG you mean vivaldi thumbnail folder or synced files folder?
The last one I think is still a work in progress (should sync only the customized thumbs status if understood correctly).
