Crashing on many websites.
-
I've been using Vivaldi for a few years now and love its customizations and features but over the past few months it has been crashing on more and more websites. It doesn't happen on all websites but does crash on even mainstream websites like plex.com
I'm typing this via Google Chrome because vivaldi just crashed for the umpteenth time. This time when I opened reddit.com
If I start vivaldi from the command line when it was set to reopen the last website, reddit.com, it crashes immediately and I get this output -
$ vivaldi [111873:111873:1031/170930.845176:ERROR:policy_logger.cc(154)] :components/enterprise/browser/controller/chrome_browser_cloud_management_controller.cc(163) Cloud management controller initialization aborted as CBCM is not enabled. MESA-INTEL: warning: Performance support disabled, consider sysctl dev.i915.perf_stream_paranoid=0 [111873:111904:1031/170931.499128:ERROR:nss_util.cc(357)] After loading Root Certs, loaded==false: NSS error code: -8018 Segmentation fault
Also on startup, when it is set to open the startup page I get a pop-up saying "open xdg-open?" but I don't know why.
I've tried the tips, deleted my cookies, turned all my extensions off, even deleted the vivaldi folders under /config and /cache, which lost me all my settings and customizations.
I don't want to go back to Google Chrome but Vivaldi is becoming more of a liability than a help.

Please provide the Linux distribution and version, as well as the Vivaldi version you are using.
I am using openSUSE Tumbleweed and both of the web sites you referenced above, load in fine here, using the current Vivaldi 6.4.3160.34 Stable.
The reference to xdg-open, means there is something on the web page (for example, a link to an independent application) that is instructing Vivaldi to launch. You can click Cancel on those.

@Chrisl300 This is a known bug if you set "Startup with" -> Homepage. Set it to -> Startpage. (or Last Session)

@npro The crashing or the xdg-open?
Thanks, I am trying that setting, I'll report if it continues to crash.

Today Vivaldi keeps crashing for me too when I want to open it.
Might be different because I don't get the xdg-open dialog. The window appears but then closes again (I have A LOT of tabs).
I'm on Manjaro and use Vivaldi 6.4.3160.34 stable.Log when opening from console:

I'd be fine with trimming or removing tabs from the session if someone can point me to tools how to edit session data. Because I really don't want to loose all of the tabs...

Vivaldi seems to be crashing less for me, but it still does crash sometimes.
Although it might be because I have been using Google Chrome more, which seems to have improved since I used it before switching to Vivaldi. -
@npro Last Session was what I used to use, but then it crashes again and again because it tries to re-open the page that made it crash.
I know you can open a new private window to fix that but if you were in the middle of something that needed several pages open it is annoying.

@Chrisl300
Hi, the question is why it crash for you?
I cant even remember when I had the last crash.
Hundreds of tabs open?Cheers, mib
-
@mib3berlin No I usually have about 10 websites open max.
When it crashes on a website it seems to do so consistently for that session/day. Then later the website will work.
It was crashing on plex.tv and reddit.com, for example, but isn't today.
One suspicion I have, but haven't been able to prove consistently, it that it crashes when a site uses "Login with Google" and the pop-up for that is causing it to crash.
Vivaldi used to work flawlessley, not so much lately.

@Chrisl300
Hm, I don't use this pages and never "Login with Google", thats may the reason it never crash.
Vivaldi create crash log files, maybe remove older log files and if it crash again report it to the bug tracker with attached log files.
This is really helpful for the developer and all of us.
Crashes are also much easier to fix than these ugly random UI bugs.https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/troubleshoot/reporting-crashes-on-linux/
Cheers, mib

I fixed it with this procedure.
- Open
/usr/share/xdg-desktop-portal/portals/gtk.portal
- Change UseIn=gnome;
$XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
(eg. UseIn=gnome;Hyprland) - Restart
- Open
