Solved Default Browser
-
@ingolftopf surprisingly Apple started allowing third party browsers to be set as default as of iOS 14 (so in 2020). Problem is that Apple needs to approve the app in order for it to be set as default.
-
Yep they should do. Have been running Firefox as default for a while now. No reason they wouldn’t do the same for Vivaldi

@benroach
Hello,
Welcome here and have fun with Vivaldi.I think you are with Apple on the road.

@RiveDroite I'm surprised that Vivaldi still can't be set as the default web browser. Any idea how long it will take Apple to "flip the switch"?
-
@kevin57 good question! I don't work for Vivaldi, so don't have any internal knowledge. Maybe Apple doesn't allow a beta browser to be set as default?

Yeah its allowed. Firefox is a good example of this. A user can have both regular Firefox from App Store and Firefox Beta from TestFlight installed at the same time and will have the option to set Beta as default if they choose to.
-
Vivaldi is still in test flight isn't it? Perhaps apple wants it to actually release to the store before they allow default? In "beta" status they are probably thinking they are protecting users by not allowing default.
-
@Maxburn The Orion browser managed to get the default browser permission back when it was only available through TestFlight.
Being only available on TestFlight has nothing to do with it.
I don't think there is much sense in speculating why Apple hasn't given the permission to Vivaldi. For whatever reason, to our detriment, they just haven't.
-
@AltCode exactly. it's a bit of a minefield at times.
-
For those that may have missed it, it’s now possible to set Vivaldi as the default browser on iOS/iPadOS with the latest TestFlight build.
