Solved Constant crashing, YT vids freezing, doesn't open
-
Using Vivaldi 6.1.3035.111 (Stable channel) (64-bit) on Win 10 Pro Edition Windows 10 Pro Version 22H2 (build 19045.2846).
In the last month I've started having constant crashing, Vivaldi sometimes won't open, Opens then crashes after a few minutes, YT videos freezing after any length of time, streaming videos crash and have to reload the page, extensions constantly crashing and have to be reloaded.
This is on a new profile as my old one became almost completely unusable due to these same issues.
I tried disabling extensions and that worked at first, but then the same crashing, freezing and not opening started again anyway.
This happens regardless of the number of open tabs. I have 307 tabs on my old profile, and had 9 on the new profile and it was still happening.
I also have Chrome installed and it works perfectly without any of these issues.
Tried GPU Acceleration ON and OFF and makes no difference.
Tried complete uninstalling Vivaldi and fresh install makes no difference.Installed extensions:
Session Buddy
uBlock Origin
Video Speed Controller -
Internet Download Manager
YouTube Volume ScrollPreviously used Tab Session Manager but it crashed all the time so now trying Session Buddy.
Not sure what else to do. -
@inadream, please try the following:
- Restart the browser
- Make sure the browser is up to date
- Test in a different profile
- Reset settings
- Disable Extensions
- Enable (Third-Party) Cookies
- Disable Tracker and Ad blocker
- Delete Browsing Data (chrome://history)
- Disable Hardware Acceleration
- Change the reported User Agent
- Test in another browser
- Check your security software
If you have found a bug, please report it at the bug report website.
-
Disabling Adguard on my system temporarily stopped all these issues, however see my next post further down for what happened next.

@Pesala thank you, I was wondering how to do that
I have just now found I am still having an issue with Vivaldi unfortunately. When I launch the browser I get the grey background with Vivaldi icon in the centre but nothing else loads, no tabs, no menus, no min/max/close buttons, just the shell of Vivaldi with grey background. I have to force close Vivaldi and try opening repeatedly until the tabs and full GUI appears. It opened on the 5th try.
The extension 'Ghostery' also crashed shortly after I installed it. I guess I will monitor that and see if that continues.
-
Okay Ghostery has now crashed a few more times in the last couple of minutes so that's not resolved.
-
The constant extension crashes are continuing.
Ad blocking extensions that crash repeatedly:uBlock Origin
Adblock - best ad blocker
Ghostery..and session back up extensions that crash repeatedly:
Session Buddy
Tab Session Manager (now uninstalled)Yet I have 3 other extensions installed that are behaving fine:
YouTube Volume Scroll
Video Speed Controller
Internet Download ManagerI'm also now finding YouTube is malfunctioning. If video freezes i reload the page but the previous page is stuck onscreen and no new YT page loads despite the reload button showing that it has indeed reloaded the page!
I can't now blame this on Adguard as it's no longer running on my system.

@inadream Maybe turning off all your extensions by going to
chrome://extensions

Thanks @Vivaldiscool, what I've done prior to seeing your two posts is uninstall the latest Vivaldi and install the old version 5.0.2497.35 (Stable channel) (64-bit) from January 2022. I then disabled automatic updates and have not installed any adblocking extensions. I did install Session Buddy and have had no crashes in the 15 minutes I've been using it.
YouTube is acting normally, no page freezes, no extension crashes and no browser crashes.
I've also disabled "update_notifier.exe" by adding ".bak" to its name.Next, I will install uBlock Origin and see if the crashes begin afterwards.
If crashes begin again, I will then follow your advice -

Downgrading breaks your browser data, is not recommended and can cause unforeseen weird issues. And we can not help to fix that broken data.

@Vivaldiscool - Thank you I did see that list and the results are:
- Restart the browser - yes, many many times.
- Make sure the browser is up to date - yes, up to date all along.
- Test in a different profile - yes, same issues.
- Reset settings - yes, same issues.
- Disable Extensions - yes, same issues.
- Enable (Third-Party) Cookies - yes, same issues.
- Disable Tracker and Ad blocker - yes, disabled a few days ago.
- Delete Browsing Data (chrome://history) - yes, same issues.
- Disable Hardware Acceleration - yes, disabled a few days ago.
- Change the reported User Agent - not done yet, will report back after testing
- Test in another browser - Tested in Chrome, Edge and Brave with no issues.
- Check your security software - all disabled besides windows firewall, but same issues.
I will do #10 tomorrow and report back, thank you again
-
@inadream Okay, if your browser DOESN'T work after this, please report it to Vivaldi bug report.

Thanks TbGbe, I have completely erased the Vivaldi Profile Path folder in AppData\Local multiple times when uninstalling Vivaldi so a new installation could create a new folder but issues have the continued so far.

@inadream said in Constant crashing, YT vids freezing, doesn't open:
all disabled
"Disabling" 3rd party security software does not disable it. It continues to run background processes which scan and block "untrusted" software if it is still installed.
-
@inadream Best while testing is to remove all extensions and third party which may affect and add it back in batches according your priorities. Said that:
ublock origin = shouldn't cause issues, a lot of people here use it, but may fails while used in combination with:
// adguard (another blocker)
// ghostery (known to had issues, plus another blocker)
// adblock - best ad blocker (yet another blocker)// session buddy (these extensions often doesn't work in Vivaldi)
One of these two may break youtube:
// youtube volume scroll
// video speed controlThis shouldn't, IDM works fine here:
// Internet Download Manager
With 3rd parties we also mean antivirus, firewall and sandboxes (other than defender).
Some are known to have issues in vivaldi. -
@Ayespy Thanks for that, my 3rd party Win progs are Adguard, Kaspersky Internet Security and Malwarebytes Windows Firewall Control.
A few days ago I reverted to Vivaldi 5.0.2497.35 (Stable channel) (64-bit). I also disabled Adguard in Windows Startup so that it does not load at startup, and also changed the Adguard Service to manual so the service does not run unless I open Adguard. I have had no issues since.
I am about to update to the latest Vivaldi to see if the issues return.
Fingers crossed
-
Thanks @Hadden89, a few days ago I reverted to the older Vivaldi 5.0.2497.35 (Stable channel) (64-bit) as well as disabling my Adguard program in Windows. The chrome extensions installed since reverting are:
IDM Integration Module (enabled)(installed automatically)
Magic Actions for YouTube (enabled)
Return YouTube Dislike (enabled)
Session Buddy (enabled)
TubeBlock - Adblock for Youtube (enabled)
uBlock Origin (enabled)
Unhook - Remove YouTube Recommended (enabled)
Video Speed Controller (enabled)Kaspersky Protection (disabled)(installed automatically)
Malwarebytes Browser Guard (disabled)(installed automatically)
Youtube unsubscribe all (disabled)So far I have had none of the problems I reported earlier.
Video Speed Controller - I have been running for a few years without issue.
I am about to update Vivaldi to the latest version and see if the issues return.
-
I'm now on 6.1.3035.111 (Stable channel) (64-bit) and will monitor for a few days, or will report back as things unfold.
