Getting warning for outdated/unsecure browser on Ebay.com
-
@DoctorG AAAHHHH it was set to Vivaldi. I changed it to Google. NO MORE WARNINGS!!!!
THANK YOU!!!!Sorry for the delay. The forum says I must wait 120s between postings.
-
@BriKyKo Pleased to help you
-
@BriKyKo said in Notice when visiting Ebay about updated browser:
it was set to Vivaldi
I guess you did it weeks/months ago and forgot about setting. Such can happen
-
Yes I did change it. I was going through the settings and saw it set to Google and I thought: "Wait this is Vivaldi" and so changed it to Vivaldi.
-
@BriKyKo Ah, ok.
Vivaldi devs changed to disguise as "Google Chrome" to help Vivaldi browser displaying all websites, also the dumb ones with bad Chrome-only filter/detection.And i guess nowadays nobody detects in web server logs which products visited a page. Telling the servers: i am Vivaldi has no postitive effects.

Today this popped upon Ebay (Ebay direct page)
"Oh No! Update your browser today! Starting June 30, your favorite sites won’t support outdated, unsecure browsers for online shopping. Update Now. Learn more.Learn more."
I just checked my Vivaldt about file and it agrees with the most recent.
6.1.3035.75
Unless going above the x.x.xxxx.75 is a substantial upgrade?

@garynappi Hi - this has been a topic several times over the last weeks. Apparently Ebay has some crappy browser-detection script that detects Vivaldi as an "outdated" browser. Most likely they do not even know Vivaldi exists
Might be some solutions in there:

https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/87924/vivaldi-not-acceptable-after-june-30
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/87811/anyone-getting-unsupported-warning-on-ebay-comApparently, this warning is only served to US, possibly Canada/UK users. None of us Euro types have been able to see it even trying to reproduce it by telling we're running IE5 and similar.
Otherwise, just ignore the warning.
Or, since you're a customer, report this to the Ebay support and tell them to get their fingers out of their... -
@garynappi Try if upgrade to Vivaldi 6.1.3035.111 Stable will help you.
-
In a Private Window, ebay's home page is currently not displaying that message, using Stable 6.1.3035.111.
In the Privacy and Security settings, Popups are blocked.
My User Agent in Settings/Network is:
-
@edwardp So - in a regular window, the message is displaying? Always, on every page, on certain pages, when logged in or out, with adblocker on/off with the default setting in Network brand masking?
There's a lot of stuff try and get to the bottom of what's causing this. I would try, but it never ever happens for me, even when I send the user agent of Internet Explorer 6.
-
Reporting browser brand as Vivaldi:
With the ad blocker turned off completely for ebay (no blocking), the graphic described by the OP is displayed.
With the ad blocker completely on (blocking trackers and ads), the graphic does not appear, once I delete all the ebay cookies and refresh the page.
At best, it is appearing intermittently.
Reporting browser browser brand as Google Chrome:
The graphic does not appear with the ad blocker completely on.
-
@edwardp What about the rest of the stuff I mentioned, test that as well. Make a list of stuff that seems to affect the warning.
Then again - should we spend time on something that is clearly not Vivaldi's problem, caused by half-witted Ebay developers?
Besides, 30/6 has come and passed. And the site still works. So no worries right?
Anyone who cares enough about Ebay to use it regularly should report it as a bug to them. We can't really report a bug for Vivaldi - because it's not a Vivaldi problem.
-
@Pathduck It's also called browser-sniffing and it's not Vivaldi's problem.
Yes, today is 1 July and their web site still works perfectly.
-
I also get this warning!
-
@CrashBurnsley Are you sure you are on the real ebay page? The wording is very very suspicious. “Unsecure” is not an English word and the banner talks about “your favorite sites,” not even mentioning ebay … I would ignore this and do a security check on the system. Make sure you test the page on a fresh profile too, you might have a malicious extension.
-
There have been several topics about this already.
No-one's found a cause and I think it can safely be ignored (but annoying).
Appears to be for only some users in some countries, I have tried getting it but never did.Or someone should contact Ebay support and let them know their stupid browser detection script is broken.

@luetage Thank you for your prompt response. I appreciate it. And I'll check that, since that's not normal. I was a little bit suspicious about it myself. So I will make sure to try to get on a legitimate ebay page Thing is that I've ordered stuff off this and got it and had no problem whatsoever. I'll take your recommendation and see what happens. again, thank you for your response.
