DuckDuckGo response times like 8 seconds in April 2023?
-
I've used DuckDuckGo as Vivaldi's default search engine for years. Around the beginning of April 2023 the Windows version suddenly pauses with a blank screen for about eight seconds (!) before showing any results.
Vivaldi 5.7.2921.65 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
Revision 7dba05d7fcf6f361b9243b11c60685f954ff3b1a
OS Windows 10 Version 21H2 (Build 19044.2728)I get the same delay using my cellular hotspot connection, a completely different route from my normal WISP internet connection.
Vivaldi on Arch Linux still responds normally - but it has not been updated for weeks.
Every other Vivaldi search option I've tried still responds in normal time.
DuckDuckGo in Windows Firefox shows a similar delay, but only five seconds.
DuckDuckGo in iOS Firefox or Safari responds instantly, over the same internet providers.
I see people complaining about one-second delays. Can I be the only one getting eight second pauses?
-
No such issue here. There is enough delay to notice the progress bar, but nowhere near to eight seconds.
Bing and Ecosia are the same as DuckDuckGo.

Bing and Ecosia are the same as DuckDuckGo.
Same search database maybe, but definitely not the same servers. Both show results immediately here, but watching in Wireshark they trigger storms of packets - around a thousand with Microsoft servers following the Bing test, close to 2000 with Ecosia and various "cloud" servers following that test.
All encrypted, of course, so we have no clue what they're doing... Duck searches transmit the search results page and leave you alone until you ask for more. Only 200 packets for the whole search!

Look, saying that you don't have a problem is not a good reply to someone having a problem.
-
@LorenAmelang I'm having the same issue for other domains, seeing significant performance degradation in comparison to other browsers.

It's a valid reference point for further troubleshooting discussion, and it's a useful comment early-on in this and any technical forum. When other users (myself included) don't see the same issue as the OP's, the implication is that the problem cause may lie near to the OP's installation, settings, or communication channels.

Results load in roughly 0.25 seconds here. Does it make any difference if you search a suggestion as opposed to your typed-in term?
That DuckDuckGo on Firefox also has a big delay makes me suspect something at DuckDuckGo and not Vivaldi.
-
No Vivaldi problem, get exactly the 0.25 seconds @g_bartsch mention:
Do you use the DDG extension?
It cause issues for many user in the past, maybe it got an update regression and slowdown Vivaldi again.Cheers, mib

No, I just go to the DuckDuckGo search website.

I'm just guessing at 0.25 seconds; it's fast. Is it possible to determine the exact time?
EDIT: I saw the bottom of your image.

I am sorry, I meant @LorenAmelang to ask for the DDG extension.
This is the extension Page load time, I use it sometimes.

Is this the extension you are using? It causes no issues?

@g_bartsch
Yes, I use it in the snapshot build without any issues for many years now but not in my daily internal build, I don´t need it there.Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin Thank you; I'll install it.
-
@mib2berlin Hmmm? I've installed it - and see that it is indeed installed - but the counter doesn't show up. I'm using 5.8.2978.3 (Official Build) (64-bit). I've tried to customize the status bar but can't see it.

@g_bartsch
Depends on the Theme you really cant see it, I use the same build. We should not occupy this thread to much, it´s really of topic.
Cheers, mib

True; sorry to the OP.

No extension, no DDG website, I just set it to be the default search in Viv Prefs.
Totally agree it is mysterious that Firefox also shows a long delay on this Windows machine. I suppose it is time to do the clean install ritual, since nobody else is seeing these long delays. My Viv and Firefox have most of the same extensions...
Just tried going to the Duck website first. The site is drawn quickly and suggestions pop up in the search field instantly as I type - but when I hit Enter I get the same ~8 second pause!

@LorenAmelang A quick search for "ddg slow" found this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/duckduckgo/comments/129z1xz/comment/jeql7ii/Which lead me to find this:
https://github.com/darkreader/darkreader/issues/11047Tested installing Dark Reader in a clean profile, and it's slow. Disable it, it's fast. So that's the cause.

https://www.reddit.com/r/duckduckgo/comments/129z1xz/comment/jeql7ii/Wow - Thank You! So I guess the Bing database doesn't equate "DDG" with any of the other versions of "Duck..." - I saw lots of Reddit griping about one-second pauses, but never that one!
Setting Dark Reader to "Light" made no difference, I had to Disable it, for Duck or for everywhere. And then the search page is still pretty much dark, just low contrast. Wonder what does that...
At least the mystery is narrowed a lot. I wonder if Duck and Dark Reader will just blame each other... At least we can see Dark Reader's GitHub. Is there a way to report problems to the Duck people?
