What do you expect from Vivaldi on iOS?
-
Hi all!
As someone who stumbled on the blog post from Jon where he takes a clear stance against crypto it immediately peaked my interest in the company so i downloaded Vivaldi to give it a try on desktop (It´s been many years since i last tried it) and i quite like it! But until Vivaldi releases a good option on iOS they can´t become my default. So my necessities for a iOS browser:
- Tab sync and send
- Built in adblock on Brave Browser level, which i find to work good for me.
- Custom search engines (preferrably with a option to sync search providers/settings across all devices)
These two next points are basically how Safari does tab management and in my opinion every browser should be mandated to at least include these as default behaviour on iOS:
- Switching tabs by swiping left/right on bottom/url bar
- View all open tabs by swipe up on bottom/url bar.
One random wishlist item is:
- Dark Reader built in would be fantastic.
Tab management is why i´m currently on Brave (I need Windows and Linux clients too so no Safari), which i consider the least evil option of the Chromium bunch currently available on iOS but since i absolutely despise their crypto focus and want to switch desperately so really my hopes are on Vivaldi now.
Looking forward to seeing what the future brings!

are we going to get a new toy for the week-end?
-
@TalGarik One can surely hope. I know i do.
-
@pjol it looks like there was too much optimism on my side
-
@TalGarik Well, we are approaching the weekend so maybe this will be it! And if not..Rinse and repeat the hopes and dreams on Monday for the next one.
-
@pjol the release of 5.7 stable is getting closer, I am confident the iOS version will come with it
-
@TalGarik Sorry. I do not understand such confidence.
-
@TalGarik Hope you are correct… Tap on microphone Vivaldi Team you got that?
-
Just joking, killing time waiting for this release finally, then I was considering this by you:
@Ayespy said in Vivaldi for iOS:
@LocutusOfBorg Work on iOS is going forward behind the scenes. I see evidence of feature work and bugfixes every day. It will be released as soon as Apple admits it to the Apple store, and broad public testing makes sense.
then it is 5 months from when they started working on it and the "coming soon" that has appeared in the forum section dedicated to it. if it is not now it cannot be that far still.
Staying in topic I have to say that for me a reliable sync represents the most important feature, as a fact if it wasn't for its very limited sync options - and constant failures especially when I am away from home - I could live happily with Opera.
-
Looks like it didn’t come with 5.7’s stable release. For me, being a full-time iPad Pro user I would have two major needs for iOS:
-
A fully useable iPad app (essentially a landscape mode)
-
Full cloud sync for cross platform utility.
In my mind these are the two main offerings that would compel already active users to adopt it as a default browser immediately. I would be content with waiting on every other bell and whistle if we just had basic functionality available to us on Apple’s touch devices.

Just switching from Brave (well trying it out cause I need way better tab management).
A full desktop-like experience on iPad
Sync (It's going to hurt not having it for a while..)
Ad-blocking (Absolute must)
PiPDream State:
Some sort of Protonmail/calendar/etc integration. -
What do you expect from Vivaldi on iOS?
For it to release.
Been trying out Vivaldi on my Pixel and there is a option to follow the device preference for setting dark/light mode in Vivaldi UI but for applying the "Dark theme" setting (I.e Dark Reader) there is a manual toggle i have to manually enable/disable whenever i want to change how content is displayed.
So assuming the upcoming iOS/iPadOS also includes these both options it would be fantastic in my opinion to see that both are automatic, I.e follows system appearance setting.

6 months later and not even a Test Flight version
-
@TalGarik Not necessarily the case...

are you implying that the Test Flight version will be out in the coming days?
-
@TalGarik I really can say no more at present...
-
I really, really hope Vivaldi takes the sane approach down the line with releasing the Vivaldi app and that for me is
App Store - Release version
Public testflight - Snapshot
Private testflight - Internal testing/QA.And that both public versions(!) include the right entitlement so that a user can choose if they wish to use Release or Snapshot as default browser. Basically look at how Firefox does this and NOT how Brave does. Worst scenario in my opinion would be if choosing the path of Chrome and Edge where you can´t have two versions installed at the same time.
-
the latest post by @Ayespy gives us hope that the Test Flight version will be available very soon, but it is easy to guess that the road to stable will be a long one (as long as the road from nihil to Test Flight?), so expecting 3 release channels looks a little bit premature perhaps

That´s why i wrote:
down the line
Edit: And yeah, at this point i´d be super happy to try out a regular TF where i even couldn´t set Vivaldi as default browser.

The biggest thing I'd like to see is Tab sync with Desktop version.
I often hop around between my iPad, MacBook, and iPhone. Would love to have a sync feature where I can synchronize my open tabs and tab groups across devices. Personally that is one of the biggest draws to Safari.
