Vivaldi teams up with You.com for privacy-focused, personalized search

I don't understand why a pop up window appears after every search asking me to log in. Log in? Why?
-
@RichardHC
Hi, what pop up do you mean?
If you meant a Google pop up you have a service active, Google calendar or Gmail, for example.Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin The search results page for you shows two buttons: Log In and Sign Up. and often (not always) a popup window appears saying basically the same thing - like this -
-
@RichardHC
Ah You, I don´t use it as default search engine so I never saw the pop up, log in area on the page seams OK to me.
Do you use the Vivaldi Ad Blocker for this page?Cheers, mib

Actually, yes, the add blocker is active for the you page. But my question was really why a supposedly super private search engine wants my email address plus, the default setting for the search engine is NOT private and they do collect data on what you search for to supposedly tailor the results to what you are most interested in. I don't WANT a search engine to tailor anything, just give me the spread of information available on the topic. They do have a private setting but when you select that it automatically and irreversibly goes to the dark mode. Lastly, they are using the Microsoft Bing search database - as does Yahoo and DuckDuck etc. So..... my question is basically: Why You.com?
-
@subhoboy: That worked for me. Thanks!

https://you.com/legal/privacy
ehhhhhhhhh
I'll pass -
@Merulox , You is only private in the private mode, which I use by default in this search engine. In Normal mode it isn't better than others like Bing or Yahoo respect privacy.
-
@Catweazle Wow, thank you, I somehow completely glossed over the 'privacy mode' section, likely due to confirmation bias. I might give you.com a go then
-
-
@catweazle: Thanks for the heads-up about Andi. I'm going to play around with it as my default/suggestions search and see how it goes. Their mission is interesting.

@stilgarwolf you are checking their about page - about.you.com, instead of their actual search page?
You.com with Private Mode is fine on uBlock Origin (the only other domain showing up, launchdarkly, is used for deploying new features)

-
@stilgarwolf Are you sure you have Private Mode on? Plausible only shows when you have Personal Mode enabled : )
