Solved Address bar auto-complete has been ruined
-
There's an update baking up
https://vivaldi.com/blog/desktop/address-field-quick-fixes-2876-11/Should be soon released
-
5.7.2876.11 does not fix history items appearing in autocomplete by title. If you type the title of a page you have previously visited into the address bar, it will still autocomplete.
How was so much damage done to the address bar that it's taken this long to fix it?!
-
@5eagull
Hi, it was not damaged it was a complete rewrite of the address bar feature and now they have to sort out errors.
I am a internal tester and didn´t find any of the address bar bugs, I simply don´t use the address bar.Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin Are you saying that you don't test features you don't use and additionally, after rewriting some functionality by developers, you don't do regression against the older version? You're not serious, are you?
-
@ourostra
Hi, Vivaldi tester was not the correct description, I test reported bugs in the bug tracker to verify it for the developer and this mostly for mobile devices.
Otherwise I use Vivaldi as user like any other and therefor I didn´t notice the address bar bugs.Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin Thanks, now I understand the context of your statement.
It's of course possible that the average user didn't notice all sorts of bugs, but overall what's going on since the two "stable" builds is ridiculous
-
@thedanbob this has been fixed in the latest snapshot. See VB-93468 in the changelog

You are one of the official Vivaldi testers?

When I click "check for updates" it says i have the last version, 5.6.2867.36, which has the address bar bug.
Is there an ETA when the new version with the fix will be available?
Thanks

Apart from everything mentioned above, it now includes www in the suggestions. I regularly visit wnxxforum.co.uk/. In the past I would just type 'w' and it came straight up. Now it lists the last www. site you visited so I have to type wn to get there. Not the end of the world, just annoying.
I would also like bookmarks to be totally excluded from suggestions. Even with 'prefer bookmarks' disabled it populates the suggestions with loads of bookmarks I haven't visited for ages.
Hope the new release as and when it comes out fixes this.

Do you have "include Bookmarks" unchecked under the address field drop-down menu section?
-
I type "mail" in address bar
-- or even "mail.yahoo.co"
It autocompletes "mail.yahoo.com" in the address bar
When I hit Enter key, it sends me to "http://outlook.com/owa/" from bookmarksVery annoying that it goes to different pages than what is written!
It is clear that changes to the address bar were released without any testing.

I imagine a new minor stable release will be coming soon to fix this bug, as it's quite a major one. It's already been fixed on the snapshot version.

Minor update ready:
https://vivaldi.com/blog/desktop/minor-update-5-6/
More fixes will be coming next week, but this fixes most of the worst ones.

Thx @jon !

Still broken in 5.6
Instead to only search in the url, Vivaldi insist to search in the title description of the page giving constantly wrong results.
Here i've typed "co" to access the webpage corriere.it (that's present in my browsing history), but vivaldi autocomplete with a totally unrelated page because it search and give priority for CO in the title of the page.
I'm starting to suspect this is not a bug but a new "feature", but it make the autocompletion a lot worse than before.

Yes I do.

Yep I think got worse in the latest release: there some strange delay also when it tries to auto complete, so maybe if you are too fast to type something it might get overwritten by the autocompletion while you are still typing which is veeery annonying.
Also in the latest realese I'm getting a lot random crashed (where vivaldi just closes and thats it, no crash report window etc) but ye no strictly related to the topic. -
For every step forward in smart technology, there are two steps back for intelligent people.
-
The latest release has totally ruined it. It has got rid of including www. in the results but now hardly suggests anything useful at all.

Here's a video describing my issue btw.

Please do not clear the suggestion when attempting to edit it.
I just removed the bookmark suggestion altogether and that made a big improvement, so did the update.
Thanks for trying to fix this so fast, but I'm a bit appalled this got through Q&A.
