Private Window Hung on Open
-
I've had this exact same problem occur intermittently over the last 10 days or so with version 5.5.2805.38 (Stable channel) (64-bit) on Win10. It first occurred (and most often recurs for me) when opening the Private window directly from a pre-existing task bar shortcut (set to C:\Program Files\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe --incognito) while a 'regular' Vivaldi window was also minimized on the task bar. However, on a few occasions, this same problem has also occurred when right-clicking on a variety of bookmark links using "Open in Private Window". In each case, I have had to force-close the gray-screen instance using the task bar right click "Close Window" option; after doing this, reopening the private window has thus far succeeded OK.
Overall, the problem seems to occur infrequently for me with no apparent linkage to a particular URL... in most cases, one or both my Vivaldi task bar icons ('regular' and 'Private') are set to initially open at a passive HTML local home page. On a few occasions, the 'regular' Vivaldi icon was pointed to a minimized Vivaldi instance connected to an online target URL. In the cases where the problem occurred via a right-clicked link from within a 'regular' window, the Private window was attempting to open an online URL.
The only thing I can add is that the problem has never occurred here before with all the prior Vivaldi versions through 5.5.2805.38 (Stable), but it first appeared the day after I updated to the current *.38 version. It occurs so infrequently for me that it's difficult to pin down other details that may be involved. I use no extensions in Private mode; and in 'regular' mode, I use NoScript, Ghostery, and Cookie Auto-delete... all of which have never previously caused any issues. I use a Dark Theme in 'regular' Vivaldi and a custom Red theme in Private mode.
PS: just now, in trying to check out my themes while writing the preceding paragraph, with Vivaldi's Settings page open from within a 'regular' window, the "File > Open in Private Window" menu option selected from the 'regular' window opened the problematic solid grey page instead of the usual Private window. Closing the problem window via the task bar "x" succeeded and a reopening of the Private window via the menu option then occurred normally. This was the first time this particular trigger mechanism has occurred for me, and in duplicating those same actions several times since, I have not been able to get it to recur.

@DoctorG What do you mean, exactly? Do you mean "I open private windows a dozen or more times every day for the past several weeks/months and have never seen the problem" or "I just tried it and it worked?"
There's clearly an issue here, since three separate people have described the exact thing under slightly different circumstances, so if it's the former it means something other than the browser version and windows version matters. If it's the latter, based on the reports, it doesn't mean anything.
Assuming it's the former, there must be something in our configuration that we all have in common that you do not. Maybe extensions loaded in the regular mode are causing problems with new private windows somehow? It's pretty inconvenient to just disable all of them for however long it takes to reproduce the issue, possibly days, so here's the extensions I have installed. If there's one that's common to everybody here but you, we can disable that and see what happens.

As an additional observation of detail, when I open a private window in Vivaldi, it has always (or at least for as long as I can remember), first momentarily popped up a new window on-screen that is initially solid grey with no borders, icons, bars, frames, or such; and then within a second or so, that is suddenly populated with theme, icons, bars, etc. When the problem occurs, the grey screen doesn't disappear and simply hangs there on-screen. It's almost as if the next step in the private-window creation process is not occurring for some reason.

@Blackbird Yeah, I see the same thing. The blank window opens, then after a brief pause the UI populates (usually). I honestly don't know how old that behavior is, it's never really registered consciously before. When the problem happens, it's like it just misses that second step.

Just a followup to say this happened to me just now on my work computer with an essentially clean and un-customized install of the latest version of Vivaldi. I'm not signed in, I have no extensions installed, I haven't changed any themes, I don't think I have so much as entered the settings menu, but the issue still occurred.
There's very little in common between my work computer and my home computer. I feel pretty confident now in saying this is just a Vivaldi problem and not related to my (our) specific configuration. I think it's a sporadic enough issue that most people don't use Private windows enough to see it and we'll need to just put up with it until the devs stumble across whatever's causing it.

Count me in. I also have this occasionally.

I launch via File, New Private Window. About 25% of time, I get gray window. As with others, closing and reopening works. I am on 5.5.2805.38 (Stable channel) (64-bit). This has been happening for me maybe about a month.

@dellskin Try update to 5.5.2805.44.

Thank you, in my very limited testing, it appears to be fixed.
-
Definitely not fixed. I'm on the newest stable release (5.5.2805.44) and it's happened multiple times today.

Agreed. I'm also on stable release (5.5.2805.44) and it happened here once yesterday when opening Vivaldi private window from a taskbar shortcut icon. I use that icon at least several times a day (with an instance of "regular" Vivaldi minimized to my local HTTP homepage on the taskbar), and the problem for me occurs around once a week or so. However, that problem frequency can be misleading, as it has happened in the past a couple times a day - leading me to conclude it's essentially a random but infrequent occurrence.

That would be the path using the Menu bar "File" button via: File > "New Private Window". From my observations, opening a Vivaldi Private Window in any manner can trigger the problem (Using that Menu bar path, using a Taskbar shortcut icon with the ""vivaldi.exe" --incognito" command, or via right-clicking a URL and selecting "Open Link in Private Window"). I've had it occur all three ways.

I have this problem as well.
I am running the newest version of Vivaldi, ending in .44
I was not using Vivaldi before, so this is a clean profile and I actually did a disk clean up, ran sfc /scannow and did dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup and then the /checkheath before I installed Vivaldi and Firefox (prior to that I uninstalled Chrome, Opera and got rid of IE and Edge as much as I could).
I do use a black theme for Vivaldi, but I originally did not. With or without the theme, it locks up when I open a private window, about half the time I do it. I use taskbar to close it, then re-open it and it works fine for awhile.
-
I confirm the same problem
-
@WIXAPOL Confirm what?
How do you create such Private Window? -
@DoctorG I presume @WIXAPOL means that the same thing happens to them. Go to Menu/File/New Private Window, click on that option, and sometimes the private window fails to finish opening. It creates a plain, blank screen with a Vivaldi logo in the middle, no UI controls or framework, and freezes at that stage of the process. If one closes that "window" and once again creates a private window using the same procedure, this time it will be successful.
I experience this about 20% of the time I attempt to open a new private window. I suspect a race condition, as most of the time it works but sometimes doesn't, and is always remediable by trying again.

Having designed a LOT of digital logic in bygone years and observed numerous kinds of race problems, I've concluded this is exactly what this problem behavior seems to replicate in code. When a Private Window is attempting to be opened, before things can complete, some marginally too-quick parallel process or code path intervenes to unexpectedly block or interfere with the rest of the opening details unfolding. I keep hoping to trap some brief or flickering detail that will give a better clue, but no luck so far. I just had another occurrence yesterday with a right-clicked URL in a regular window that I was attempting to open in a private window.

@dellskin It was happening 25-50% of the time. I then upgraded to 5.5.2805.44 and it did not occur for around 50 times, but it just happened again. So it is happening for me much less often, but it is still not completely resolved.
