All passwords were erased when updating Windows and restarting
-
Hey guys,
In the early morning I updated my computer and then restarted it to apply the Windows 10 updates. Later today I loaded the browser and found out I am logged out of everything: google, facebook, and every website I was ever logged in. All saved passwords are gone from the browser.
I found the file User Data/Default/Login Data responsible for storing passwords, looked into it and found individual stored items, which are still present. However loading the file into Nirsoft's Chrome Passwords utility showed that although all entries are present all passwords were erased, the password column is all but empty. Also email passwords were missing.
Can ANYONE suggest anything that could help and also why this would happen? I also noticed all cookies were gone too. And no, I didn't "accidently" clear the browsing data or anything, I know better than that. Furthermore, nobody had access to my computer during those few hours, it was with me at all times.

@Beholder4096 Rare case: update did not close all apps correctly and Windows Quickstart broke data. Or something with a Windows update could have changed the encryption key of your Windows 10 user, that leads to loss of login passwords.
Before that, had you copied the
Login Data
file from another Windows user's Vivaldi browser data and/or had you downgraded Vivaldi?Do you use Vivaldi Sync?
If you have a daily backup, try a restore file
Login Data
and start Vivaldi again -
@DoctorG
I can exclude following:
Rare case update did not close all apps correctly and Windows Quickstart broke data. (I closed Vivaldi myself before restart)
No downgrade, no copy of Login Data
No Sync
No daily backup unfortunatelyIf a file can break this easily then Vivaldi team must make an automatic daily or weekly backup of these files. Or perhaps a something like a session backup (but for all critical files) like old Opera 12 had.
The only thing I remember I did differently in 24 hours before the problem was that I installed old Genius G-pen graphic tablet drivers, which are probably completely unrelated to this mess.

No, browser data files do not break easily. I use many Vivaldi versions on Windows 10 and never had such broken login data file after Windows updates.
Sorry to say, but you are the Windows user who needs to take care on your data and run regularly a backup of your data.

@Beholder4096 Had you accidentally switched profiles by command line parameter or in Settings → Address Bar → Profile Management?
Or any security software on Windows installed which had cleared files?
if di not really know how such issue could happen on your side.
I feel sorry for you.

Thank you.
No any such software.
There's probably nothing else to do just to look for important passwords in paper docs and also use one backup file from more than 1 year ago. -
