Solved Where is the code I enter to make my "new tab" action to be Speed Dial 2 extension?
-
I cannot see how to get this functionality, but I have it in every other chromium browser. Thank you.
P.S. I do not agree with a statement made by Mods in 2018 saying "it's just as easy to use default new tab and then click on Speed Dial 2". That's simply not true.

@quicksite What is speed dial 2? You will not get a concrete answer, if you can’t explain this. Is speed dial 2 the extension? And I never talked about a 2 step way.
Ok, I think you just want to use your extension as new tab page…
Go to
vivaldi://settings/tabs
and under New Tab Page check Startpage and check “controlled by extension.” Then your speed dial extension will show up when you open a new tab. -
@quicksite Make speed dial 2 speed dial 1. No other way. If you think there should be an option, come up with a concrete idea how to handle it and write a feature request.

@luetage Sorry not clear to me. You mean I have to do it the 2-step way, which is use Vivaldi default speed dial, create a speed dial to Speed Dial 2, then click it?
I am not an engineer but the way this has been solved in other chromium browsers is by way of yet another extension called "New Tab Start Page" — here — https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/new-tab-start-page/mjfahldkpjhcnfbbmdhpjolcjpcfhcpj/related?hl=en-US
Then there is a piece of custom code replacement that goes into New Tab Start Page settings field 1. I do not know any other way to activate Speed Dial 2 on a chromium browser that blocks it.
The above workaround has been around for the past decade and was first used by users of "Speed Dial [FVD]". Use of the intermediate "New Tab Start Page" was designed exactly to enable the selection of a different Speed Dial system. I think it's fair that users who've invested lots of time and money into using Speed Dial 2 (which is flawless and does what I want the way I want it) should be able to use their choice of an alternate new tab page.
I get it that there is intense pride in any product development team to feel "we have licked the problem and have executed the best possible solution on earth", but that seems to go against the whole principle of choice and usability design options of one's choice.
Is it just not supported because "ours is better"? If so I ask your team to consider the possibility of just making users happy. I am hardly the only one who wants to use Speed Dial 2. Since I am not an engineer, I have no idea what the scope of work is to enable use of SD2. Thank you for your consideration.

Not sure what scope of detail you are asking of me. But simply speaking, Speed Dial 2 is a chrome extension that redirects the browser's default "new tab" button behavior to instead load Speed Dial 2's grid of bookmarks to websites. It is notable for its graohical customization.

@quicksite See above.

Got it, thank you very much. I will give it a shot! Appreciate your help.

Oh my god it works perfectly! Thank you very much for being patient with me. The Help Page has it all there ( https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/navigation/start-page/ ), and now I understand it that Vivaldi had long ago provided that option to use alternate Speed Dials.
Now I have the perfect browser! So happy about this.
