Back button in New Gmail interface "to" box
-
In Gmail, when I click "reply" to a message, then put my cursor into the "To" field and press the backspace key on my keyboard ("delete" on a mac), it used to remove the default recipient, but since Gmail changed their interface Vivaldi now goes to the previous page (as though I had pressed the backspace key while the focus was outside the compose window).
Has anyone else noticed this? (The Bug Report form says to first ask in the forum if others can reproduce the issue) I'm on MacOS using a MacBook Pro with an external Bluetooth keyboard.
I first noticed this a couple of months ago but it only occurred to me today that this was a browser issue instead of a Gmail issue. As a workaround, I've completely disabled the backspace keyboard shortcut in Vivaldi (which I don't think I ever use anyway), which is something I also didn't think of doing until today.

@chcsep Hi there, I can confirm this happens here on Win10 as well. I don't use the new Gmail interface, so it also happens in the "old" interface. By "new" here I'm assuming you mean the new one they're testing and not the ancient "for slow connections" HTML-only one.
I recommend you just keep the Backspace key removed and forget about it. Use something else, I use Z and X mostly for back/forward.
Vivaldi is AFAIK the only modern browser that still sticks with having Backspace as History Back. And as a consequence, can't expect web developers to care much for the one browser who insist on using the key for something else than what it's intended for (erasing input).
I don't know who started with using Backspace. I suspect it was maybe old IE, because Windows file explorer has backspace for history back and MS wanted Win users to think of the web as part of the OS. But I might be wrong, might've been Mozilla or even old Opera (which might explain why Vivaldi uses it).

OH and since I love diving into rabbit holes, here's some interesting reading on the history of Backspace in browsers:
https://ux.stackexchange.com/a/53179
"The backspace key was mapped to the browser โBackโ function in Mozilla for consistency with Internet Explorer."
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.backspace_actionSo I think my assumption that IE is to blame (as always) is correct

@Pathduck I am also in Gmail's "old interface" btw.
I agree that I haven't missed having backspace as a back button shortcut.
Thanks for the history lesson! Apparently it was removed from Chrome in 2016:
