Vivaldi doesn't show Wikipedia pages
-
I worked with an old version of Vivaldi browser for a few years (don't remember which version anymore) that didn't auto-update.
Stupid as I was, I fixed something that wasn't broken by updating Vivaldi to latest version some months ago. Then I noticed the new version doesn't display Wikipedia pages (they remain blank) when I have the browser open for a while. Then I have to restart the browser to fix it.
A couple weeks ago a new update came out and I hoped it would fix such an obvious bug. Alas, still the same problem. What do? -
@BloomerGrowjob Please see Trouble-shooting issues.
- Tell us your Vivaldi and Windows versions
- Which language is your default?
- Test in a private window
We would have seen loads of threads on this if it was a new bug. It is probably an issue with your particular setup. I have no issue with loading Wikipedia pages.

@BloomerGrowjob
Hi, I guess nobody report it to the bug tracker or nobody else have this issue.
I cant reproduce it on Windows 11, Vivaldi v5.4.2753.47 (Stable channel) (64-Bit), clean profile, no extensions.
How long you have to open Vivaldi/Wiki to produce this?Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin I'm on win7 64bit. But I have quite a few extensions so could that be the problem?
-
@Pesala
I guess extensions must cause my problem then. Didn't realize it, sorry. I will disable them and do kind of a reverse elimination diet
Sorry for bothering. Great browser, I love how you can add search engines and shortcuts.

@BloomerGrowjob Disable all your extensions, then enable them one by one to identify the trouble-maker.
-
I seem to have the same problem. Not only on Wikipedia but other sites, mostly other wikis (fandom.com ie).
I tested my extension and it goes away if I disable UBlock Origin. I use the same extension in other browsers (the same version) and there it doesn't cause similar problems.
Pages are not completely blank, they are just very broken and some images remain here and there but no text is present. -
@viteklis Hello and Welcome to the Vivaldi Community
I tested my extension and it goes away if I disable UBlock Origin.
Then the next logical question is: What differences are between those other browser installations of uBO and in Vivaldi?
- Different block lists?
- Blocklists updated recently or maybe not in a long time?
- Specific settings/filters/rules you have set?
uBO has a logger feature that will allow you to see what blocklists are in effect when requests are blocked which is useful for troubleshooting broken pages.
https://www.ghacks.net/2015/07/01/ublock-origins-logger-highlights-the-extensions-activity/uBO also allows you to export your settings, so they can be imported in another install. For instance you could share your settings, and some others could test if they see the same issues on pages (if you actually share what pages you have problems with, not just the domain).
It's also important to note that when using adblockers, you will experience broken pages from time to time. It's up to you to be able to troubleshoot these issues. uBO is an advanced extension, and it's easy to set things up so that a lot of sites will break. uBO needs time to learn how to use and understand it properly.

Hello @Pathduck,
I just upgraded from Vivaldi 4 to Vivaldi 5 and now getting the same issue. Wikipedia is not rendering anymore and I see only a white webpage. I have all extensions disabled. -
@danvil Are you sure all extensions are disabled? Did you restart the browser or refresh all pages after disabling them? Does it work in a guest window? It looks like you're the only one to report such a problem, so it must be something on your end causing this.
-
He is not only one reporting this problem:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/81416/blank-page-shown-on-some-web-sites/41?lang=en-US&page=3I have a same problem. Wiki will not show anything or just keep flickering some elements. Same happens even if I disable all of my extensions.
But if I go to the private window, it works. -
@Nathaniell Try deleting the cookies for Wikipedia.
-
I just tried what was suggested in the link I send - which is disabling hardware acceleration. Which worked... But I expected that turning it on again will get me back to blank wikipedia... but it didn't. So turning HA off an on fixed the issue for me.
Edit: After reading the first post again.. maybe it was fixed just by the restarting of browser. I didn't know that restarting browser might fixed the issue. So I will keep an eye to it and report back if it gets broken again. And if it happens again, I will try the cookies deletion.

Problem returned, this time with quora. Restarting browser fixed the issue for a very limited time. Deleting cookies did nothing.

I'm having the same problem. I'm seeing it quite consistently on wikipedia and occasionally on linkedin and instagram.

@Pesala
Hello, Pesala!This is more Fyi than anything else...
I tried turning off all extensions;
Deleting Wikipedia cookies;
Turning off Hardware AccelerationBUT, if i type in the address bar 'Wikipedia.org', it (sort of) works*. I just can't click on a link of Wiki from a website, say to look at a movie, etc.; it gives an error if I do that. And.... same in Chrome.
*Sort of works: The main Wikipage loads fine; but it won't allow me to search for anything. It says:
"This site canβt be reached
en.wikipedia.org refused to connect."It would appear Chromium is at odds with Wikipedia(?).
-
@Wolfee Not here. Wikipedia works perfectly.
No extensions (sometimes they have to be removed rather than disabled to stop interfering).
Still, sometimes Wikipedia may respond differently by region - fine in English, but perhaps not in Russian or Dutch. But it's a hard one to run down because different geographical areas and different languages are served by different servers.

@Ayespy
Thank you, Ayespy!I forgot to mention; i even went into Malwarebytes and "Allowed" wikipedia.org.
And as mentioned, it won't work in Google Chrome either. Could be just me, I guess.
Oh well, I'm not a huge Wiki-user anyway, so no worries. I was just trying to read about a film (The Lost King). There are plenty other sources.
Thank you, Ayespy!!

I could not resolve any wikipedia links. I am running running Pi-hole and whitelisting www.wikipedia.org instantly fixed my problems.
I cannot explain why or how tho. Shrugs and exits stage left.
