Old_Vivaldi.exe running in the background

Second option I've tested prior to writing this thread, it didn't help
Oh, i'm surprised that was not the cause!

Service Worker showed me that file is located in: AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default\Storage\ext\mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli\def
Well, that is Vivaldi Preferences folder, see
https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/install-update/full-reset-of-vivaldi/#:~:text=Preferences and Local App Settings\mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli – Vivaldi settings and configuration.Tried this option and found background-service-worker.js that didn't want to Unregister or Stop.
Are you sure about the name? "background-service-worker.js "
It does not look correct. Was that from the "scope:" title or from "script:" line?
The scope title is the information you need to refer to. -
@TbGbe
From script line, but i didn't include whole line, which looks like this:
Script: chrome-extension://mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli/background-service-worker-3b9f9866bc8f1e8ab5e2bd52b655958c.jsAs for a scope it's:
Scope: chrome-extension://mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli/Also this one is different from other entries as it has this line:
Fetch handler existence: DOES_NOT_EXIST;Instead of this line, like others do:
Fetch handler existence: EXISTSDon't know if this is of any importance tho.

Hi - don't attempt to delete this worker, it's part of Vivaldi, and it can't be deleted, this is on purpose.
I believe the Chromium setting "Continue running background apps" is used for installed "Apps" i.e. PWAs/sites you've "installed as an app". Check
vivaldi://apps
if you have any (apart from Vivaldi itself).Possibly service workers could be involved, but I'm not sure about the details.
I think some extensions could also register themselves to run as an "app" and keep a process running when the browser is closed.
It seems the Vivaldi update process will fail when these background processes are running.
Also, what is the command line of these processes? You can check this and copy the full cmdline using a tool like Process Explorer (Can't be done in Task Manager).
-
Checked vivaldi://apps
I have only Vivaldi and Chrome Web Store.
Earlier I had BetterTTV, but it didn't work so I removed it.
As for command line I have this:
Process 1:
Process 2:
Process 3:
Process 4:
Edit:
Also I should add that these processes run separately from other vivaldi processes.
-
@AnthiLithuro OK so you have four processes running when Vivaldi is closed? Strange also that they all seem to be Network Service processes...
Do these processes also persist when the browser is started? Note down their Process ID (PID) from procexp and see if they still run after Vivaldi start. Maybe then you'll have a chance to figure out what they are in the Vivaldi task manager (Shift+ESC) by comparing the PIDs.
-
As I mentioned in Edit, they run separably from rest of Vivaldi.
They can't be seen in Vivaldi task manager, any of their PIDs aren't listed there.
-
@AnthiLithuro Strange. I know some extensions also might keep browser processes running when closed.
Might just be "Zombie" processes.
Have you tried to terminate them, and do they come back?Note: In Process Explorer choose File > "Show details for all" to launch in admin mode in case you can't kill them.
Also I note that they are coloured blue, which should mean they are running under your user and so should be possible to terminate without admin permissions.
In PE you can also go into the properties of a process and look at the "Parent" value under "Image". My guess is it says "non-existent process", so it's a "Zombie" process.
-
Tried and they don't respond to it (admin or without). In task manager they just sit there without response. In procexp when I try to kill them it just select process above.
Checked Parent value and it is indeed non-existent process for all of them.
-
@AnthiLithuro Really strange that you can't terminate them, and that you say they come back after reboot. Maybe they are related to the Vivaldi Update process somehow.
Try killing them from command prompt, launch cmd as admin and use
taskkill
. Either kill all "Vivaldi.exe" processes (close Vivaldi first!) or do one PID at a time.
https://tweaks.com/windows/39559/kill-processes-from-command-prompt/Do you also have a "update_notifier.exe" process running?
-
I don't see any update_notifier.exe.
As for taskkill i get line that says:
there is no running task instance -
@AnthiLithuro No idea what that error message means. Is it translated?
These are the error messages it should throw if the process is not found:
> taskkill /IM vivaldi2.exe ERROR: The process "vivaldi2.exe" not found. > taskkill /PID 1234 ERROR: The process "1234" not found.
Are you trying to usetasklist
to kill processes?A quick search found:
https://superuser.com/questions/1183057/tasklist-shows-process-but-taskkill-is-unable-to-kill-it-even-as-adminA possible solution from there:
wmic process where name="vivaldi.exe" call terminate
Really, a reboot might be the next best step, are you sure they appear after a reboot?
-
Yes it was translated. After googling it I've found thread on other site with someone having same issue as me but for chrome.
Used taskkill and taskkill /F, didn't help.
Also didn't had these error messages.
But in the end I've turned off my PC due to weather outside, which does seems to fix the issue. I don't see any of these 4 processes now.
After first reboot they were there, but now they're not.
-
@AnthiLithuro Sometimes a reboot is the quickest solution
It's rare I see processes that cannot be killed with
taskkill
or directly from Task Manager/Process Explorer as admin. But apparently they do exist.Hopefully this issue does not appear again. It might be related to the Vivaldi updater failing in some way...
-
Maybe I've spoken too early... Just now I closed Vivaldi for a second and now I have only one process that don't want to close.
Command line:
Parent: non-existent process
Same taskkill response: there is no running task instance
Again it's outside of any other Vivaldi processes.
-
@AnthiLithuro Do you have any extensions that could cause this? Try disabling all extensions, restart Vivaldi, and see if it happens again.
Also try going through the troubleshooting steps, including testing in a clean profile:
https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/troubleshoot/troubleshooting-issues/ -
I don't have any extensions right now.
As for troubleshooting:
- Restarting browser didn't help
- Vivaldi is up to date
- Created new profile and there I don't have this issue.
- Tried resetting general settings and didn't help.
- I don't have extensions. Only extension I had on Vivaldi was BetterTTV but I've removed it few days ago.
- I have third-party cookies set to block in incognito mode only
- Disabled Blocking trackers and ads, restarted browser and it didn't help
- Cleared Cache and Cookies, didn't help
- Tested if any process would be left in Opera as I've used it prior to Vivaldi and still have on my drive. It does not, only Vivaldi left one.
- My security software is up to date and not blocking Vivaldi.
During every step except for 3rd and 10th i tried to kill this process with browser off, didn't help.
-
I saw these background tasks too, after updating to last or previous to last version.
- fresh start of vivaldi, all tasks under main program in task manager.
- after a few minutes some of them go to background tasks, now the number is lower under main.
- after some more time, background tasks go back to the vivaldi main process, number rises.
I did not measure the time between these events, just using vivaldi like normal, everything looks ok tho.
Now waiting for the background tasks to join vivaldi main, they don't : )
But they will do later and stay with the main task, that's what I saw about two days ago.Maybe that's a chromium thing, as it was updated lastly.
My actual version is 5.3.2679.68 (Stable channel) (64-Bit) , Win10 21H2.
Pics:
Background
Main
53 tabs open, most of them hibernated, the number of tasks (6) for the main task is lower than expected.
Adding both numbers results in the number of tasks in vivaldi task mgr (shift-esc).PS: no old_vivaldi.exe trouble here, this seems to be a different thing.
-
@bariton Well, if you can figure out how to reproduce it from a clean profile, and maybe what the cause is, then please report a bug.
Please read:
carefully and report the bug to Vivaldi bugtracker
It does not happen here, and I've never seen it myself (that I can remember), so even if I have the tools to understand what might go on, I can't do it here.
-
@Pathduck After being afk for 2 1/2 hours, the background task were still running. This was not the case before.
Restartet vivaldi, now all tasks are under main. Will try not to touch V for 10 mins and watch task manager.
About reproducing: well, lets see.
