Solved Issues with changing the default search engine after update
-
Every second post on the forum is currently about this issue, searching really helps. Sigh.
Long story short:

Known issue
If you have recently upgraded to 5.3 and have a problem where you cannot change search engines (VB-89670), we are still planning a fix for this in a future update. To work around it in the mean time, just disable and immediately re-enable any extensions you have installed that can configure/setup search (.e.g. “DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials”, “Startpage — Private Search Engine”, “Kagi Search”, etc.). Now restart the browser. You should then be able to control the default search engine again in Settings.EDIT: @mib2berlin beat me to it.

Running Mac OS v12.3; Vivaldi 5.3.2679.38 (Stable channel) (arm64) - All of a sudden, the default search engine is locked to BING. I cannot delete it. Re-installed Vivaldi; - with no change. I have done a virus scan - all clean. re-booted Mac, all to no avail.
This issue has happened in the past (2021), but could not find any resolutions. I have never used BING, duckduckgo has always been my engine of choice. ??????? -

Thanks for the quick response. Apologies for not noticing the change log.
Disabling the “DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials” and restarting browser worked. Thanks -
@mib2berlin Thank you for a solution that finally works! Resetting all extension off and then immediately back on, removing DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials and then restarting Vivaldi worked.

Yes, Bing hijacked my search engine also. I searched for a resolution but I'm stimmed about the word "extension" used in earlier results. What does this mean?

I have previously used DuckDuckGo as my preferred search engine. With this latest update, 5.3.2679.38, I see that I have this as a selection for the default engine but I cannot effectively select it. Bing somehow got installed and I can find no way to change that. If I can't, I'll abandon Vivaldi.

I have been using DuckDuckGo as my default engine for a long time but after the last update Bing has been set as the default search engine and clicking on any other search engine to set as default in the settings has no effect. Unchecking the default from bing is greyed out as well.
Does this mean that we are forced to use Bing now? Should I look for another browser again?

Thanks for the answer I will try it out... I am currently having major issues using vivaldi though as sync stopped working. I think 5.3 update was quite rushed, it came with a lot of issues. For instance on 2 of my machines vivaldi wouldn't start and I had to delete all local data to get it going effectively losing local sessions among other things.

I agree. However, that can happen sometimes. Even when it is not done "rushed".

It's just gobsmacking to me that so many people lately have decided that they simply "have" to create their own thread on this recent problem, rather than --gasp-- actually read the forum, note that there's already a plethora of almost identical posts, & then still create yet another, rather than contribute to an extant one. Why why why?

This work around worked for me: Just disable and immediately re-enable any extensions you have installed that can configure/setup search (.e.g. “DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials”, “Startpage — Private Search Engine”, “Kagi Search”, etc.). Now restart the browser.
