Solved Browser History does not retain
-
I'm still relatively new to Vivaldi, so please be kind when I make stupid mistakes. (As I seem to make no other kinds.)
I'm having a bit of an issue with browser history (i.e. what I get when I press Control-H). Specifically, it does not appear to retain history from previous sessions. The Save Browsing History was left untouched at three months, but yesterday I changed it to six months because I thought maybe it had somehow been reset. But when I started up today, nope, nothing from yesterday or any time before that.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

¡Hello, @Keldin145014!
I just checked the option you are looking for and you can indeed select the month, nothing should be deleted with this configuration.
Anyway, there is one more below that is regarding cookies, it has nothing to do with the history, but he is responsible for storing information so you do not have to always log in, be sure to do it.
If you find that you are still losing your browsing data, it is probably due to an OS setting. Sometimes profiles erase everything once you turn off or turn on the computer.

@RealMat0s, yes, as I said, it was originally set to three months, but I set it to six to see if maybe it just needed to be reset.
The cookie settings are the same as yours.
But I'm still losing everything after each session. Not after turning the computer off, after each session. For example, this session shows nothing before 13:56 today.

@Keldin145014 The history file (for Windows 10) is normally in:
C:\Users\ <your username> \AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default
Just called "History", but it is a database file.Mine grows by about a megabyte a month. Is yours missing, or tiny? Dated today? Lost when you quit Vivaldi?
Many database tools can show the contents, including the dedicated app:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/browsing_history_view.htmlIt shows far more hits than Vivaldi's history shows me...

The history file is, at the moment, 448K. The Nirsoft viewer shows exactly the same history that Control-H does. So the only thing I can guess is that it's clearing the history when I shut Vivaldi down. But I see no settings that may be causing that.

@Keldin145014 Just checking - in Nirsoft Options -> Advanced Options, do you have the top "filter" set to many days, not a couple of hours?
Do you have other browsers installed? If you enable them in Nirsoft, does their history go back farther?
What does Nirsoft show after you quit Vivaldi?
-
@LorenAmelang, yes, it's set to 10 days, but even increasing that to 365 days isn't helping. I do have other browsers installed, and when I told it to include Edge and Chrome, it doesn't do much. That's normal, though, since I just went through a cleaning cycle on this computer yesterday. (And no, I had this problem before that.)
When I exited Vivaldi and then refreshed the Nirsoft viewer, all of the VIvaldi history was gone.
-
@Keldin145014 Pretty conclusive! Is the whole History file gone from Explorer after you quit Vivaldi? Or does the size just drop? Do any other files in the same folder disappear or get truncated?
Have you tried "Forever"?
I've seen obscure problems with Windows' sense of clock time...

@LorenAmelang
Hi, "cleaning cycle" meant you use a cleaning software like CCleaner?
These applications are known to delete files they should not delete, cookies for example.
May after an Vivaldi update the app choose to delete the Vivaldi history file.Cheers, mib
-
@LorenAmelang, setting it to Forever seems to have done it, yes. Or, potentially something else. I guess I'll never know for sure, but... well, I have three days worth in my history now, so that's good at least?
