Solved Browser keeps closing / crashing on its own
-
Like many posters I have experienced sudden "shut downs" on Mac (i.e. vivaldi closes but there is no crash report). These have become more frequent over the past few days, and Vivaldi is becoming unusable. It is by far my preferred browser in terms of its UX, but stability has taken a complete nose dive. Please fix!! (NB Vivaldi is completely up-to-date, but I am wondering whether a downgrade will solve this issue).

I've just popped into see what the status of Vivaldi is. I stopped using it altogether some weeks ago because it was unusable. It would stop without warning and leave no trace - no crash report.
This evening I opened Vivaldi to see if there was a version update but it didn't stay open long enough for me to do anything. It must have been open for less than 30 seconds.
-
Until just now I had exactly the same problem, that Vivaldi regularly crashes for no reason and without a crash report.
I work under macOS 12.3.1 with an M1 Pro chip. -
I've just downgraded to 5.1 and this seems stable. But there are obviously security issues surrounding using older versions. Please fix, Vivaldi.

Same here, it's been happening to me for the last few versions of Vivaldi. At first I thought it was just something on Twitter's website, because that's when it would crash for me most often. Then this morning I only had the Art of Manliness open in the browser, I wasn't even interacting with the page, I was writing in the Messages app next to my browser, when the browser window crashed on its own.
macOS Monterey 12.3.1
Vivaldi 5.2.2623.46 (Stable channel) (x86_64) -
@nickoo 5.1!
• downloaded the latest 5.1, Vivaldi.5.1.2567.73.dmg , at https://vivaldi.com/download/archive/?platform=mac
• moved Vivaldi [5.2] from Application folder into Trash
• opened dmg file & installed
• 24 hours and no closing/crashing! -
@Nanamahina Maybe better for me to recommend Vivaldi.5.1.2567.73.universal.dmg (instead of Vivaldi.5.1.2567.73.dmg)

@echosyn said in Question about regression rather than downgrading:
When I download will the system automatically choose the version for my Imac?
All of the current macOS download links should point to a .dmg file that looks like Vivaldi.5.2.2623.39.universal.dmg
This "universal" build contains both Intel and Apple Silicon binaries and should work on any Mac.
The download archive also has links to .dmg files that look like Vivaldi.5.2.2623.39.dmg -- these should only be run on Intel-based Macs, and only if you experience problems with the Universal build. Do not use these with Apple Silicon-based Macs; although they can translate and run non-native Intel binaries under Rosetta 2, I have personally run into stability issues and crashes when testing with these builds on my M1 Mac that do not replicate when I run native code in Universal builds. -
@Nanamahina Yes, 5.1 is stable, but there is always a security risk using older versions of apps. Vivaldi really needs to sort this. I am keeping an eye on this thread to see whether an update to 5.2 provides a solution.

Me with the same problem of crashing... In the past month I've tried to download the latest version of Vivaldi for several times, and each time it crashed within one hour. At first it crashed when tried to reopen it; later the circumstance became a sudden crash without any reason... So the only way for me is using:
@Nanamahina said in Browser keeps closing / crashing on its own:Vivaldi.5.1.2567.73
This really works, but I really hope such crashing problem get fixed soon... Vivaldi hasn't experienced such repeated crashes in the past year.

Downgrading Vivaldi should ALWAYS be avoided, if possible. Older versions of Vivaldi likely have known security vulnerabilities, ones that "the bad guys" are actively exploiting in the wild. Vivaldi profiles are also NOT downward compatible so downgrading Vivaldi can also cause your Vivaldi installation to become unstable, unless you purge the profile and start anew with a clean installation.
Regarding this random crash, I'm pretty sure that they have a fix... or at least a fix for one crash that many are seeing. I don't know what the showstopper is for cutting a new Stable build. It's possible that the Vivaldi team have additional fixes that they want to include in the next 5.2 update.
-
@xyzzy the bug is very still going on and I'm using the latest version of the browser. I don't know why it takes so much time to get an updated version with the fix (if the team found a fix). I know that losing one user is not gonna change anything for the Vivaldi team but I will give one more week and after that, I will switch browsers. As much as I like using Vivaldi, it needs to be usable...
-
At least once a day but usually closer to 3 times at this point vivaldi will freeze, then after about a second or two I'll get the spinning beach ball, then either it continues until I have to force-quit the program, or eventually the whole screen goes completely red and it just shuts itself down. The thing that's driving me absolutely crazy about it is that I've gotten so used to how customizable Vivaldi is, that I can't go back to another browser. I keep saying I can't deal with these crashes multiple times/day and I'll switch to other browsers, but a day or two later, I'm back on vivaldi testing things out, uninstalling programs from my computer hoping maybe that will help, switching around settings or extensions, deleting browsing data, even making new user accounts. I really can't deal with these crashes anymore but I also can't switch to another browser because I'm just so used to vivaldi it's like going back to the stone age. Please somebody help me fix this!

@redzonedesigns There is not much to do except wait for an update.
Several Mac users have reported crashes over the last weeks.

I've been having the same issue for a few months now - but it's near impossible to reliably replicate - it just 'quits', and doesn't seem to matter what page you're on. Sometimes I won't even be working in the browser and it'll do it.
I've been with Vivaldi since launch, and have stuck though the good times and a few ropey updates, but is getting to the point between this issue and other hard-to-replicate-but-critical issues like the browser hanging when you right-click on something are generating too much down time & lost work.
It's really tough - I think the wider market is starting to recognise how harmful (and lacking in features!) Chrome is, and are primed to try something new. I do try and advocate for Vivaldi, but unpredictable stability issues makes it hard, allowing FF & Brave to steal the action.

I have written in this discussion a few times and I do not know if this information can be used every time the browser is closed when I reopen it, it asks me to enter the password of the synchronization account even if I have checked the option to store the password
It's normal ?

We have just released a minor update that should hopefully resolve the common issue with crashes on macOS. Please update your browser to the latest version.

The fix that I mentioned in my previous post has been released. I hope that this will resolve the random crashes that many of you here have been experiencing.

Well, I updated and it's stayed up longer than in the past... so good so far!
