Solved Update Check Dialog Remains on Closing Browser
-
I reported this bug back in August 2021. After retesting it today, I could no long restart the latest snapshot - 5.3.2636.3 - and to restore a backup from 1st April 2022, then restore some other files. I use a Standalone Snapshot installation as my default browser.
(VB-82183) Update Check Dialog Remains on Closing Browser
Test at your own risk
- Manually check for updates (Autoupdate is off)
- Leaving the dialog open, close Vivaldi
Result
- The dialog does not close. Close it manually.
- Try to launch Vivaldi from its shortcut or directly from vivaldi.exe
- Vivaldi will not start up. There are no error messages
- Reboot the PC and try again
- Vivaldi will still not start up.
-
@pathduck OK. I found that, it is a long time since I set up the mail client.
Still not able to reproduce in a clean install. This may have to wait until my mind is clearer.
-
What risk? The update check is a separate program with its own taskbar icon. Closing Vivaldi itself will not close the update check, nor will closing the update check close the browser. Been that way for years now.
-
@sgunhouse The risk is, if anyone follows my recipe, they may not be able to start Vivaldi again. I don't want to be blamed if that happens to brave person checking this for me.
Maybe it is not a bug that the update check dialog remains open, as you say it is a separate process, but each tab and extension is a separate process too, and closing the browser closes those processes.
-
That's why I didn't say process, I said program. If you use Task Manager in Windows, separate processes can be the same program as seen by having the same executable path or command line. Previously anyway, the update checker was a completely different executable. I haven't actually looked at 5.3 yet, but don't know why it would have changed.

I was not able to reproduce it here. It certainly would've been a critical issue if it happened consistently.
I tested first in a standalone Stable install, then a Snapshot, then my regular Snapshot.
Something must've gone wrong on closing Vivaldi. Like what's been said the update_checker is just a standalone program. I suggest you try reproducing this in a separate standalone install, might be a serious bug here but important to get it to happen every time - and you don't want to experiment with your regular profile obviously
-
@pathduck I tried with a fresh standalone install to C:\TEMP\Vivaldi, but was not able to reproduce the error.
Then I thought, “Perhaps it is related to the pinned mail tab?” However, when I went to set up the mail client, no such option exists!?
-
@pesala If it's a new Standalone, did you enable the "Productivity Features"?
-
@pathduck OK. I found that, it is a long time since I set up the mail client.
Still not able to reproduce in a clean install. This may have to wait until my mind is clearer.
