Solved 'Save as' window or popup disappears
-
Hi, I'm using ver 5.0.2497.48.
After a windows 10 re-install, almost all apps are up and running again but Vivaldi is showing a strange behaviour: the "save as" window/popup would appear as usual when attempting to save something from Vivaldi, but then suddenly and promptly disappear (before being able to set the download location or even just to immediately press the press the 'save' button).
This does not happen to any other programme or app including any other browser.
These actions have not helped:
-switching off or removing extensions
-Reinstalling windowsOn the matter of the 'save as' window disappearing, looking through the forum, there seems to be other issues with it too: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/36735/download-popup-disappears; https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/54981/save-as-acting-as-save-for-downloads?=1644528239565; https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/56641/save-and-save-as-function-broken?=1644528134687.
I really hope the 'save as' function gets improved asap, as I am currently having to revert to another browser though I've grown to generally enjoy using Vivaldi other than this issue.
Thanks

Hi, the post from my link seams a bit old, I am sorry.
Please check the key files from: https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/install-update/full-reset-of-vivaldi/May you start again and copy only bookmarks and passwords, for example, the history and so forth.
It is really a strange issue, I never read about before.Cheers, mib

@kareem79 No problem on my side using the same vivaldi version as yours or the latest on both win10 2004 and 2009. Which version of win10 do you have ?
-
Thanks for the reply
It says
Edition: windows 10 Pro
version 21H2
OS build: 19044.1466 -
@kareem79 I'm unable to reproduce that issue here. Tested in Vivaldi Stable 5.1.2567.46 & Snapshot 5.2.2581.4 (both 64-bit on Windows 10 ver. 21H2, x64, build ver. 19044.1526)
Does it happen on every page with download options or specific ones? Did you try using a guest window or a clean profile? (For more information, please refer to the Troubleshooting issues guide). -
@pafflick hi, thanks. Checked with your 'guest window' suggestion and it seems to work normally with it. Thank you.
I had disabled all extensions to test this at an earlier point however, and it was unsuccessful. Does this mean I have to do some kind of 'clean re-install' of vivaldi (at least without any extensions)? I will try removing (not just disabling) all extensions to begin with.
Thanks again

@pafflick Hi, I suspected I had done this previously with 'removal' and not just 'disabling'. Unfortunately, it did not work with all extensions removed.
What differences are there between 'guest window' vs all extensions removed?
Thanks

@kareem79
Hi, the guest profile is a reduced clean profile, nothing is saved as mentioned in the start page text.
I guess your profile is broken.
You can rename your profile folder "Default" to Default.bak or something.
After restart Vivaldi a new profile is created.
If you use sync you can get most settings and data back (disable extensions).
If not you can copy bookmarks, passwords and some other files from the Default.bak in to you new profile.
More information: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/10388/refreshing-or-cleaning-your-profileThe path to the profile is published in File > Help > About

Hi, did the profile refresh as per "https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/10388/refreshing-or-cleaning-your-profile" and copied over all files and folders except for the 'Extensions files and folders' as advised. No extensions have been set up in the new profile.
But the problem persists.
Perhaps it's another folder or file in the Default folder? Would anyone have any which it would be?
Guest Window still works normally.
Thanks

@mib2berlin Hi, tried this. The new method does not really specify the folders in the old 'User Data' folder to copy into the new one: it says "delete the entire User Data folder".
As such, I just did that and reimported an html bookmark file that I had saved earlier.
As for the original 'Save As' window issue, this seems to have solved it. I hope it keeps that way.
Considering the rather involved and drastic means to do it though, and that it has been flagged by other users over the years, I hope the Vivaldi team can look into it.
Thanks

@kareem79 I'm afraid we can't address an issue if we're unable to reproduce it. Sometimes the user profiles break, but usually, it's the end user's environment fault (3rd-party software, file system error, OS failure, etc.) or the end user's fault (as it might happen - for example - when downgrading the browser and re-using the old profile). But I've been using 10+ profiles across 4 separate browser's installations, and I never had to rebuild/repair a profile once.
In your case, it appears that you copied one of the broken files along to your new profile, and that's what caused the issue to reappear. But since you managed to find another workaround, I've marked your thread as solved.
