Contacts not sorting in alphabetical order
-
G'day everyone.
Maybe I've missed something, but when I have my 'Contacts' displayed there is a 'Sort' option that only allows a 'Sort by Name'.
It doesn't seem to sort in strict alphabetical order, thoughIs this a bug or just a 'work-in-progress' in the continuing development of M3?

@oziian3880 contacts have not yet seen much attention so far as they work on improving mail and calendar

I can understand that. It's just that I'm one of the NOW generation, and I want 'Contacts' to be sorted NOW!
But, yes, I have seen magnificent additions & improvements in the relatively short time since M3 has risen from M2's ashes. The Mail development team is doing great work.

@oziian3880 My contacts are sorted by strict alphabetical order, so I wonder why yours are not?
Have you checked for updates recently? Which version are you using on which OS?

G'day Pesala. Thanks for reply.
Updated to 5.1.2567.39 (Stable channel) (64-bit) just a few days ago
Win10 Home (whatever latest update is)
Platform Intel NUC i3That's interesting.
My sorting is not what I was expecting, and you have confirmed it is different.
I'm wondering if the contacts sort on the NAME I have given them, or the actual email address.
I'll have to have a look at that.[Edit] No ... the actual email addresses are just as random as the real name. Nor are they in created date order or last used order. The 'Sort by Name' drop-down doesn't have any other options ie up or down sort order.
Is there any other info I can provide which may help?
Regards

@oziian3880 Try renaming a contact and see if its position in the list changes.

@pesala
G'day again.Nope. I put a 'Z' in front of both Chester Cox and the email address and it stays on top, as in the uploaded image.
[Edit] Update: Created a new contact name 'AA Test' and email address '[email protected]'. It went to the end of the 'Contacts' list.

Pretty much the same here. For some contacts it seems to be ordered just fine, but then there are several duplicates, where the mail address is just set to a name, and no actual address is associated with the account, and many mails are just not ordered correctly. I suspect that opera / thunderbird import is probably broken here?!

I would have thought that once imported, M3 Contacts should be able to sort the data it has been given.
M3 Contacts doesn't sort new or altered names correctly, either.
It's like the 'Sort' function just isn't functioning at all.Maybe it's just one of the M3 bugs that will be addressed in time.

Is this a bug or just a 'work-in-progress' in the continuing development of M3?WELL ... now M3 does. Downloaded the latest version of Vivaldi (5.5.2805.42) and there were my contacts all sorted in alphabetical order.
WELL DONE M3 Development Team. A BIG thankyou!Next: Please introduce M2's contacts folders into M3.
For anyone who is interested, now that M3 can sort in both alphanumerical order and reverse alphanumerical order, I can now force the sorting into groups. Not as easy as folders, but better than a jumble of email addresses accumulated over the years.
For a smallish group of addresses (Most Used), I have edited the names using an asterisk as the first character. This will put all names, even those starting with 'Z', into this Most Used group. You can further force an order within this group by adding a single or double space before the asterisk.
Ahhhh ... we have a problem here providing examples, as this forum uses asterisks as formatting tools.
SO ... Examples (where '~' is the asterisk and '_' underscore is a space):
~_NAME, 1
_~_NAME, 2
__~_NAME, 3
~__NAME, 4will show in the Most Used part of the contacts list as:
__~_NAME, 3
_~_NAME, 2
~__NAME, 4
~_NAME, 1Note that Names 2 & 3 DO NOT indent due to the leading space so the whole group looks really neat.
Likewise, the sort can be forced into different groups by prefixing the contact name with a 1, 2, 3, etc, where 1 may be all Social contacts, 2 might be Business contacts and 3 might be all Archive or historical contacts.
Yes, it is a work-around and far from perfect, it is time consuming to set up as well (so far I'm only up to 'D') but at least it allows some semblance of rational sort order to my contacts list.
Almost certainly others will know of different (and possibly better) ways of grouping and/or sorting contacts, and I'd like to see their ideas.
In other posts, I've bemoaned the absence of M2-like folders in the 'Contacts' list, and the way I used these folders in M2. I won't go over that again.
In the meantime, the method above works for me ... so far.
Again many thanks to the M3 Team - this seemingly minor update is really appreciated.

@OziIan3880
Hi, I donΒ΄t use contacts except start typing in a mail address this sounds suitable.
Therefore there is a feature request about already, vote it up if you like:https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/55208/organize-contacts-in-folders?_=1667287218620

Gday mib2berlin.
Thanks for reply.
Yes. I was participating in that discussion, as well.
Seems a lot of people miss some main features of M2.Best regards,
