Text in input fields sometimes enters backwards
-
Posting in this the proper channel, multiple reports of the issue using Unbuntu 20.04, 4.2.2406.44, here in the Windows thread https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/202802
-
@jswinner59 Since you have read the topic, you should know it’s a Chromium issue, meaning it happens on other Chromium browsers too. I can reproduce it.
-
That issue is a Chromium bug. I can see the same in Chrom* 93. Can not be fixed by Vivaldi, has to be done by Chromium devs and Vivaldi will get a fix in some next Chromium upstream.
-
@luetage Possible, but I have not been able to duplicate in Chromium version 93.0.4577.82 (Official Build) snap (64-bit) I have.
-
@doctorg I just spent an hour or so have been unable to replicate it at all on Chromium, now 94.0.4606.71. Vivaldi 4.2.2406.54 still consitently produces the bug, replicate every time text in the the web page body entry form is selected RtoL and the mouse button released outside of the browser window
-
That bug is reproducible on my Arch Linux based machine in Vivaldi 5.0.2497.24.
In Google Chrome it does not happen. -

I'm also having this problem on Ubuntu 2020.04 with vivaldi 5.1.2567.66 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit) -- happens very frequently. I haven't been able to pin this down but it appears there's some keyboard combination (alt- or opt- space?) that toggles RtoL <> LtoR mode.
I can't get this to happen consistently enough to figure out the exact combination, but I'm able disable RtoL without restarting the browser (my previous solution).
This is supper annoying and probably a deal breaker for Vivaldi if it can't be tracked down.,
-
Just registered to give more input. I use Linux Mint on daily basis with Vivaldi (version 5.1.2567.73 as of writing this message). I tried checking what jswinner59 said but couldn't reproduce the issue consistently. However once I managed to trigger the bug, then it seems a combination of CTRL + SHIFT (sometimes left, sometimes right shift) manages to "solve" the bug (until it happens next time). It is as if a Windows-specific keyboard setting has been ported to Linux. Interestingly the bug does not appear in the address bar, but only on the page itself.

Ppafflick moved this topic from Vivaldi for Windows on
-
@kpw10 @Mistral85 I'm not sure if that's the same bug. The one reported in this thread is related to selecting text by mouse dragging. Is that what you were doing when you experienced it?
The only way I can reproduce it is by not releasing the mouse button while typing, and it causes the same issue in both Vivaldi and Edge here. -
@pafflick It seems I didn't pay enough attention to mouse when I was doing my tests. Now when I do trigger the bug, then I can confirm it happens consistently in the conditions you describe. Please disregard my last message then, I see that I can't reproduce the conditions where I set the typing backwards in a permanent state now.
When i hover my mouse back to the main window, then typing direction returns to normal - at least this is a workaround for me. -
Reproducible for me on Manjaro Linux + Xfce + Vivaldi 5.2.2623.39 by moving the mouse outside of the window while selecting text.
-
while typing the search keyword in duckduck go serach engine, words are getting reversely written. this only happens in vivaldi browser
Any known bugs? -
@imsujith It’s a known bug. But it only happens when you are clicking, holding and moving the mouse cursor to select the search term and then move the cursor out of the window before releasing. Then upon typing the characters will be reversed. Should you be able to reproduce the issue with different steps, please share.
-
@luetage dont think its the case you mention. i just search for something and later move around some tabs and come back then type inside search bar, this issue occurs.
-
@imsujith Can’t reproduce, but can reproduce every time I follow steps provided earlier. You have to come up with a set of clear (list everything! you do) and preferably short steps to reproduce this issue from a clean profile. Post them here, then someone can try to reproduce and it will hopefully be fixed.

4 years later and this still has not been fixed!
There once was a day some/all Chromium-based browsers suffered from this very annoying bug, but that has long been fixed.
Following the steps mentioned above makes this very annoying bug very reproducable. for the dim, here they are clearly numbered in order of execution.
- find a text box in (almost?) any webpage
- type some arbitrary text
- click and drag to select that text from the end to the beginning AND while still holding the mouse button down, move the mouse OUT of the vivaldi window
- release the mouse button while OUTSIDE the vivaldi window. Do NOT click or do anything else except step 5
- start typing to replace the selected text
This is 100% reproducable and more than 4 years later still not fixed. And it's F&&^G annoying.
This is the one thing I hate about Vivaldi: their bugtracker is closed and there is no way to know where (or even if) this lands anywhere.
-
@srcpu42n Could be a new bug with similar effects. Sadly the tracker is closed but knowing the URLs where it happens, which mouse button is involved, the exact vivaldi version and a video of the issue would help a lot the testers. If you know the VB just ask here for the status.

I don't believe its a new bug, I believe it has never been fixed. But whatever. Theres been reports throughout these 4 years. So probably any version since 4 years. In particular, I am on:
Vivaldi 5.2.2623.48 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit) Revision 80d94afbd301a973f33b94e8c76a22a33ed078c7 OS Linux JavaScript V8 10.0.139.17 User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/100.0.4896.162 Safari/537.36 Command Line /usr/bin/vivaldi-stable --enable-crashpad --flag-switches-begin --flag-switches-end --save-page-as-mhtml Executable Path /opt/vivaldi/vivaldi
The steps have been clearly given and whatever else you ask, the answers are given in at least half a dozen other posts including my own.
If a dev comes in here and replies that he will attempt to fix the issue in the next Vivaldi update, if only he had a video demonstrating the bug, then I will make a video. Until then, 5 simple steps will have to suffice.
