File Extensions missing in Save As Dialog
-
Starting right about when I upgraded my OS to Monterey, I noticed a strange behavior in Save As dialogs When saving anything from vivladi: file extensions were no longer visible in the filename edit field on the Save As dialog window before saving.
Things I've Checked:
- I had my MacOS Finder setting already set to show file extensions, so I was perplexed this is occurring only in vivaldi.
- started with a fresh profile
- tried downloading different sorts of items
- tried toggling all download settings in vivladi one by one
So today, I tried UNchecking show file extensions within Finder's settings, then checked it again immediately while the save as dialog from vivaldi was still open. And that "fixes" it. That is, the file extension appears in the filename edit field like it ought to... But the problem recurrs the next time I try to save something.
.Notes/Considerations:
- Ask where to save files is turned on,
- Update default save location is turned on.
- Again, I tried toggling all settings I imagine could be related one by one.
- This occurs when selecting "save link as" or "save image as" from the contextual menu
- Also occurs when "save page as" is selected from the menu bar File menu
- Also occurs when clicking on the download icon from the PDF viewer
- does NOT occur when saving to pdf from Print dialog
It's getting to be problematic when I'm saving files and cannot be sure what type of file I am downloading from the save as dialog.

Hello, @rdmonz, and welcome to our forums!
If you know how to reproduce that issue, please take some time to read the article on how to report a bug, and follow the instructions to report this issue to the developers. Don't forget to mention your environment's conditions (like relevant system settings). Thank you.

Hello @Pafflick.
Thank you for your note
I've tried the following and the problem still exists:
I have Restarted the browser, verified I have the latest version, tested in a fresh profile - with 3rd party cookies not blocked - without any extensions installed - tracker and ad blocker disabled - and deleted all browser data. Curiously, I just discovered that the problem occurs in both vivaldi and chrome, but no other programs or browsers (including FF, safari, etc)
Issue Description:
File extension text (.pdf, .png, .html , etc) isn't visible in the filename edit field on the Save As dialog window before saving while in Vivaldi.Slide 01 image -
Shows a contextual menu preparing to save as while right clicking an image
Slide 02 image - Shows the save as dialog with no extension visible
Slide 03 image - Shows that the "show all filename extensions" in Finder setting is already turned on
From that point, When I deselect Show all filename extensions and immediately reselect it, the file extension then appears in the save as dialog. However, if then I try to save a subsequent image, or download any file, including Save Page As from the File Menu , from any website whatsoever , the same problem recurs.
Curious that this only happens in Vivaldi and Chrome. ( I had not tested this issue on chrome before today because I don't care to ever open that program )
I also created a fresh macos user account, installing a vanilla vivaldi profile , and the problem remains.

Thanks.

That suggests two possible causes: a Chromium bug, or some kind of a system error occurring on your machine. I don't recall any reports of such problems with Vivaldi as of recent. And I tried looking for similar issues regarding Chrome, but I couldn't find anything relevant, therefore I'm leaning towards the possibility that this issue is limited to your machine.
I don't have a macOS device, so I can't test this myself, perhaps someone else could. -
Thanks for your reply @pafflick . I believe I understand why you are leaning the way you are leaning. I appreciate your time.
Just curious, is there anyone on the Vivaldi team who works with this macos forum who does use a macos device? Hopefully, as you say, another mac user is reading this, has Monterey installed and the latest build of Vivaldi, and would also be willing to give saving anything a quick try to see if the dialog lacks the file extension. As it is, I know no one else personally who fits this description.
thanks again.

@rdmonz You can always report a bug, and it will be looked at by at least one of our testers who use macOS. However, I think it's too big of an issue for us to assume that it's a general Chromium thing. There would be more reports for sure - especially since there are a lot of Chromium browsers. Unless there are very specific circumstances under which it's exposed (like system configuration, settings, etc.)

Hm. I can understand wanting to see the file extensions...in Finder windows. But I don't quite get your lack of trust in the system: Must you see the extensions everywhere the file name is mentioned?
The screenshot above is from the Save As... context menu, and the extension should be .mht, no? Nah: That's for Single File...
Expand the Save As window (cllick the "v") and uncheck the Hide extensions.
which yields
And -as far as I know- this is all provided by the OS. Vivaldi is an innocent bystander...

With MacOS, I do not even see "Save image as" but only "Save link as". If I mouse over any item, I can see the file extension name in the status bar. If I choose "Save link as", I do see the file extension name in the resulting dialog box.

You can't expand the dialog box? (Click the upsid-down ^ in its little box just after the filename field...)

What is your point? I can expand or shrink the dialog box if I choose to save. I normally keep it expanded. My point was that apparently the Mac interface is a bit different.

It looks like the MacOS interface has been changed from the OS X interface, to me!
My point is: Why does it not present a check box for Hide extension?
Here's an idea: Try changing Finder prefs, to show side bar... Still no check box?
-
I have no wish to hide the extension name and I am not having a problem with it.

Didn't say you did; only that it's odd that you don't have the option...
I still maintain that the Save Link As.../Save Image As.../Save As... dialogs are functions of the OS, not the application.
Certainly -in the case of image files- one would want to know the file's type, since there are so many!Sorry I couldn't help.

@pafflick Just noting that this is indeed a Chromium bug, and was reported on the 21st of December:
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1281406
Still seems unresolved, amazingly!
