Bonus Friday snapshot – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2406.25

@doctorg Doesn't work with Stable (Vivaldi 4.1.2369.21 / Chrome 92.0.4515.159) either, so no one will notice the difference
-
Bad news for those that use Dark Reader , as its inversion affects Vivaldi's new text translation popup as well, making it look transparent.
Now who's going to be the brave and report it to the extension's author and with what expectations...
Alternatively one can decide between using one of the two, both but getting used to a "semi-broken" & ugly state, or use the experimental dark mode in
vivaldi://flags
, which unfortunately provides a more "aggressive" to the eyes inversion. -
@doctorg I see exactly the same in Chrome. Though services like Netflix work find in both us and Chrome.

Has anyone else experienced all menu entries (including context click) vanishing? This already happened 2-3 snapshots ago and I had to set up a new profile, but I'm still using my old as I have not worked out how to import mail accounts from vivaldi.
I'd changed few menu entries on this profile before and would guess that it's somehow related to this. Quite possibly it's also just my own fault (although I don't exactly understand how, but it could be related to some modifications done in the past) and I don't want to ring alarms if no one else is affected.
The effects are e.g.:
When doing a context click, I just get the following console output:
[32335:32335:0912/095435.709165:ERROR:CONSOLE(0)] "Unchecked runtime.lastError: Menu not available - vivaldi", source: chrome-extension://mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli/browser.html (0)
When trying to restore the default menu, the following is also put:
[32335:32335:0912/095348.747974:ERROR:CONSOLE(0)] "Error handling response: TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'forEach') at Object.makeMenuWithContent (chrome-extension://mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli/bundle.js:1:208581) at chrome-extension://mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli/bundle.js:1:2419950 at O._setMenu (chrome-extension://mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli/bundle.js:1:2419977) at chrome-extension://mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli/bundle.js:1:2419682", source: chrome-extension://mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli/browser.html (0)

@ruarí Edge 93 is Chrome/93.0.4577.63 and it works.
-
@doctorg Edge 93 is based on "Chromium" 93.0.4577.63. It is not Chrome anymore than Vivaldi is. Furthermore, the Chromium version is not the significant part here. Edge uses PlayReady for EME on Windows and macOS, while Chrome, Vivaldi, Opera and Brave use Widevine (Edge on Linux also uses Widevine).
Test in actual "Chrome" and report back.
P.S. This is a bug with Bitmovin AFAICT, which is why Edge is the only browser that works (i.e. Vivaldi, Chrome, Brave, Opera, Firefox and Safari all fail [the latter uses "fairplay"]. Bitmovin have apparently broken their site such that "playready" (used exclusively by Edge in the browser world) is the only EME that works. However, all these other browsers can use DRM on popular sites like Netlfix or other test sites like Castlabs. The clue to this was the error "DRM_FAILED_LICENSE_REQUEST". Widevine does not AFAIK request a license as part of playing a video. I suspect this license is one that Bitmovin has to request/use server side. You should report this bug to them.

Is the "new normal" to either have Vivaldi:
(a) download & install updates automatically (in the background with no notification), or
(b) not receive updates at all?
In the past there was an update-checker option that would alert me via a pop-up, and then an icon in (Windows) System Tray, so I would know an update is available. Is that still and option, and if so, how is it enabled?
I kind of don't like things being updated in the background with no notification, which for the past several updates is how Vivaldi was operating on my system until I unchecked "Automatically Download and Install Updates." I thought I would still have the backup of the pop-up alert and the System Tray icon.
Today, just totally at random, I discovered I missed two updates by not having "Automatically Download and Install Updates" unchecked.

@wpcoe If want to be notified, but don't want to update, subscribe to RSS feed on the Vivaldi Blog.
-
We even have a built in RSS reader to make that as simple as possible.
-
@ruarí And that's why it's called "Really Simple Syndication"

@guigirl
Esc
does not work in my Default profile either, I'm not getting the message "Press Esc to exit fullscreen", and only works if I left/right click the video beforehand. Works in a testing & guest profile though, which -admittedly- sucks. -
The last 3 snapshots and the tentative stable above all cause YouTube to flicker uncontrollably, I've uninstalled and gone back to current stable after each release for the problem to stop straight away, then reappear when I update, it does it in a clean profile with no extensions as well as my normal profile, no other browser is affected (windows 10, ryzen pc)

deleted ... forgot to add as reply

@ruarí: Well, I guess it's time for me to learn all about the world of RSS!
-
@wpcoe You want this feed if you just want to follow the snapshot blog

Has there been any progress on the "middle-click-close-last-tab-mouseover-on-next-tab-doesn't-work-when-animations-are-on" bug? (link)
-
Has there been any progress on having new tab wallpapers refresh with the desktop wallpaper? Alternatively, is the API for setting the new tab wallpaper exposed? Could it be exposed if not? This way I could write an extension to do it myself. It's been a very very long time now since the feature has been broken with only tentative "the devs are working on it" responses.

For the past two [definitely], or maybe more [idk] Snapshots, watching any video [from any source/site] in fullscreen [Default profile], has failed to return to my normal V window when i press Esc [now nothing at all happens]
Works for me (also F-key) on Solus
Vivaldi 4.2.2406.21 (Official Build) snapshot (64-bit) -
@ruarí : yep, last snapshot works now on my ancient RHEL 7.4.
Thanks!

while this is a huge temptation, I 'm afraid I won't participate... first of all
I'm running all out of that ingredient againmy other Default profile is not good enough anymore for those kind of actions and secondly... we can meet in that Nightly place -

Unfortunately you’d [most likely*] have to change the C/++ part of V, coz the UI part only asks to open the file picker or load the wallpaper. I’ve been getting around this (with a custom but changing picture, not with the wallpaper, but it should be similar) by going to the settings, checking that the custom image is the new one there (if not, closing & reopening the settings), choosing a different background and then again the custom image.
* Given that the workaround works, it’s possible that with correct timing &c you could automate this (getting an unwanted background for a moment). Maybe, just maybe, the wallpaper could reload instantly (if the JS explicitly asks to load it).
