Is there a way to get Whatsapp Web to run?
-
I use Whatsapp Web quite often which unfortunately doesn't run in Vivaldi because it's not a supported browser. But why shouldn't it work when it works in Chrome? Does anybody here know a way to get it to run? I tried manipulating the user agent string, but that didn't work.

Uhh, Those crappy services who do browser sniffing to block users. Anyway, it should be working, if I'm not wrong Vivaldi fools WhatsApp to think it's plain Chrome.
Try with the latest snapshot from http://vivaldi.net
At least here it's showing a message with a QR code. Maybe that means it's working. I can't say as I don't use it.

This is still a very strange behaviour with WhatsAppWeb. I have two installations of Vivaldi (office and home), and sometimes it's working here and not there (or vice versa), sometimes changing the user agent helps, sometimes not. Then it stopps working when it worked previously for weeks… to put it short: it's unpredictable.

Tokoloko: are you sure you've got the latest snapshot ? ( 1.0.344.24 from http://vivaldi.net/ )
This has a fix for missing UA strings which may be causing what you describe. -
Seems as it's a known bug, sometimes it works, sometimes not. I can't test though.

But, anyway, if this would be the problem: Then it should work or it shouldn't, but not depend on moon phase or air humidity. -
Nothing is that simple. There are billions of lines of code that can cause all sorts of weirdness. Parsing a simple string for example, takes quite a lot of machine codes and cycles, it's not instant. And a processor is simple, it can't understand array or strings, just because you wrote that in C that's just the abstraction for an infinitely more complex code.

Let me quote myself in other whatsapp web thread, which is available to you by using search functionality of the forum.
I use extension Chrome UA spoofer and identify as Firefox for windows on web.whatsapp and everything else works but videos.

Let me quote myself from an earlier post in this thread:

For me it does the following thing:
1. Install Vivaldi
2. Log into WhatsApp web
=> WhatsApp web works
3. Close Vivaldi
4. Reopen Vivaldi
=> WhatsApp web does not work anymoreSame issue. Cleaning cookies helps, but next time (after closing vivaldi) web.whatsapp not working again

Try using the incognito mode. It's just a temporary workaround (at least I hope) but better than nothing.
-
I personally used a workaround: download a wrapper as a standalone app…
I'm really looking forward to beta 3, hopefully this will be fixed by then! -
@RRR13:
This is not a technical problem in Vivaldi.
It's an assholical problem in WhatsApp Web. They purposefully sniff and block any browsers other than the ones they somehow approve.But isn't Vivaldi trying to mimic Chrome? If it is, it's not doing it properly. Especially when you take into account that it works sometimes.
-
No, Vivaldi is not trying to mimic Chrome. It is using the Chromium (Blink) rendering engine. It includes that Chromium version number in its user agent. If you installed a user agent spoofing extension, you could probably tell WhatsApp that Vivaldi is Chrome, and then it would work.

So does Opera and it doesn't say "Chrome", when you lookup your user agent… But anyway, as RRR13 has stated, user agent changing extensions don't do the trick.

Ok, my bad, taking everything back, should've checked that… I guess I will stay with the wrapper until Vivaldi gets big enough to be acknowledged by WhatsApp (which will hopefully happen)...
Btw.: The joke about Firefox was a good one!

I tried something and found that it works for me when I view web.whatsapp.com's page source, then click on one of the alternative links listed, although it seems to only work once. Just thought I'd leave that here.

@Dell: Wow, worked for me, thanks! Better than the other workarounds. Let's see how long it takes before it finds out.
